Yes. As of the June 2026 update, Dune: Awakening has a complete single-player mode. You can play through the full game, including its story and features, alone. Funcom also added scalable difficulty and broad gameplay customization for single-player and private-server play.
Multiplayer is optional. You can join friends on a shared or private server, use a public server with a much larger population, or play multiplayer in full PvE. The current release allows PvE throughout the game, including the Deep Desert and faction-versus-faction content, so choosing multiplayer does not automatically mean accepting PvP.

What “solo” means in Dune: Awakening now
The answer changed after launch. The current version supports a self-contained single-player experience rather than merely letting you enter an online world and ignore other players. Funcom’s June 2, 2026 announcement says the full game can be played entirely in single-player, with scalable difficulty and a wide range of customization settings. It also confirms that the final Book One story chapter can be played from beginning to end.

The story, content, and features are available regardless of whether you choose single-player, private multiplayer, or a public server. Difficulty can be adjusted for the kind of run you want, which is useful if you are primarily interested in the narrative, exploration, crafting, or survival systems rather than competition.

Single-player is not automatically the same as offline
At launch in May 2025, Funcom described Dune: Awakening as a server-based game with no single-player or offline mode. Players could still do much of the content alone, but they had to connect to a server and play in a multiplayer environment.
The 2026 update establishes a full single-player mode, but the published statements do not explicitly promise a completely offline executable. Do not infer that the game can be launched without an internet connection simply because it now has single-player. If you need true offline play, check the current platform requirements for your edition before buying or disconnecting from the internet.
Which play mode should you choose?
| Mode | Best for | World and social exposure | Control and customization | PvP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-player | Playing the complete game alone, following the story, and controlling the pace | You play by yourself rather than sharing the session with a public population | Scalable difficulty and extensive gameplay customization | No other players are present in your single-player session |
| Official public server | Meeting a large player population and participating in a persistent online world | Shared server and World infrastructure; public social spaces | Less control than a private or self-hosted session | Current multiplayer supports full PvE, so PvP can be avoided on a PvE setup |
| Rented private server | Playing with a chosen group while controlling the main Hagga Basin instance | Your server has one full Hagga Basin, while social hubs and the Deep Desert remain shared within its World | Password, server name, security-zone, taxation, and sandstorm settings; scalable difficulty | Can be configured for full PvE multiplayer |
| Self-hosted server | PC players who want to host for friends without renting a provider’s server | Designed for a private group; shared World areas still depend on the game’s architecture | Funcom says PC self-hosting supports customization for friends | Can use the current PvE options |
For a story-first playthrough, start with single-player. Choose a private or self-hosted session when you want cooperation with people you know and more control over settings. Public servers make sense when you want the social scale of a persistent online game rather than isolation.

Official servers are persistent online spaces, not temporary matchmaking rooms that disappear when you log out. The launch server overview described a Hagga Basin server that could support about 40 concurrent players while serving several hundred characters assigned to that home server. When the concurrency limit was reached, queues could occur. Those figures come from the May 6, 2025 overview and should be treated as historical launch-era information, not a guaranteed 2026 capacity for every server.
Servers, Worlds, and shared play
Servers are grouped into larger units called Worlds. At launch, players could visit friends on any server in the same World. You could build at a friend’s or guild’s base while visiting, and guilds could be created or joined across servers. Claiming land on an official server you were merely visiting was restricted.
This structure explains why “server” does not mean complete isolation. Your home server is where your character is based, but World-level connections can bring together players from several servers. Server selection also included location and language filters, and the launch interface showed which servers your Steam friends were using.
What public-server play feels like
A public server is the least controlled option. You share the broader environment with people you did not invite, and the population can change while you are away. That is useful if you want spontaneous cooperation, guild recruitment, or the feeling of a living settlement. It is less suitable if you want every structure, rule, and encounter to be arranged for a small private group.
Because the current release supports full PvE multiplayer, joining a public server does not by itself force you into player combat. Select a PvE configuration where available and verify the rules shown during server selection; the exact interface can vary by platform and update.

How private servers work
A rented private server gives the renter one complete Hagga Basin. You and your invited players control that main play area, but the server still belongs to a World made up of other private servers. Social hubs and the Deep Desert remain shared with people from that World. You do not rent or administer those shared areas.
Settings you can change
Funcom’s current private-server documentation lists these controls:
- Disable security zones.
- Disable taxation.
- Disable sandstorms.
- Choose a server name.
- Set a password.
Private and single-player sessions also have extensive customization, including scalable difficulty. These options let a group make survival less punishing, increase the challenge, or remove particular pressures without changing the underlying story.
What a private server does not provide
Private servers currently have no administrator control panel and no character-transfer system. The renter therefore cannot manage the server through a conventional admin dashboard or move characters between servers through an official transfer feature. Plan your group’s home carefully if you intend to keep the same characters and builds together.
Available rental providers
Funcom lists GPORTAL, Nitrado, and xREALM as private-server providers. Funcom does not set their rental prices, so cost, billing period, regional availability, and hardware options come from the provider you select. Check the provider’s current listing before committing, because those commercial details can change independently of the game.
Self-hosting on PC
Funcom’s June 2026 release announcement says PC players can self-host without renting a server. Self-hosting is aimed at groups that want to run a customized experience for friends and avoid a recurring rental fee. It also puts more responsibility on the host for setup, connectivity, uptime, backups, and access control.
The announcement specifically confirms PC self-hosting and customization for friends. It does not establish an equivalent self-hosting workflow for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, so console players should use the supported single-player, official, or rented-server options shown on their platform.

Yes. The June 2026 release notes say multiplayer now supports full PvE across the game, including the Deep Desert and faction-versus-faction conflict. This is important because those areas and systems were the obvious concern for players who wanted cooperation without competitive combat.

In practical terms, you can play with friends, explore, build, progress through the story, and enter the Deep Desert without choosing a PvP-focused experience. PvP is therefore an option rather than a requirement of multiplayer in the current release. Read the rules attached to the specific server or session you join, since a server’s settings determine how conflict is handled.
When PvP still makes sense
Choose a PvP-oriented setup only if your group wants the risks and rivalries that come with faction conflict and competition over space or resources. A PvE setup is the better fit for a story group, family session, or players who want to learn the systems without being attacked by other characters.

You want to play together occasionally
Use an official server in the same World. At launch, players could visit friends on another server within that World, build at a friend’s or guild’s base, and use cross-server guilds. This approach avoids managing a private server, but you remain subject to public-world rules and population changes.

You want a controlled cooperative campaign
Rent a private server, set a password, and agree on the difficulty and environmental rules before inviting the group. Remember that the private Hagga Basin is controlled by your group, while World social hubs and the Deep Desert are still shared spaces.
You are on PC and want to host directly
Use the self-hosting option described in Funcom’s June 2026 announcement. Decide who will host, how players will connect, and how you will handle saves and availability. Self-hosting is most attractive when the host is comfortable maintaining a game server and the group values customization.
You want to play entirely alone
Select single-player. You do not need a party, guild, or public-server population to access the complete game or story. Set the difficulty and other available options to match whether you want a relaxed narrative run or a demanding survival experience.
Platforms and editions
Bandai Namco lists Dune: Awakening for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its product page also lists a physical “Dune: Awakening – Day 1 Edition” for PS5, alongside digital options. Edition names, stock, and retail availability depend on your region and the retailer, so confirm the listing for your country before purchase.
What changed since launch?
The most important distinction is between the May 2025 launch architecture and the current 2026 release. At launch, the game had no single-player or offline mode; playing alone meant entering a shared server environment and completing content without companions. The June 2026 update changed that by making the full game playable in single-player and adding scalable difficulty and broader customization.
Server concepts from the launch overview—such as approximately 40 simultaneous players on a Hagga Basin server, several hundred home-server characters, World-based visits, and possible queues—describe that earlier server model. They remain useful for understanding the architecture, but they should not be read as a promise that every server in September 2026 has exactly those limits.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for different players
- Solo story player: The complete game and Book One story can now be played alone, with adjustable difficulty.
- Co-op group: Use a private or self-hosted session for control, or meet on an official server in the same World for a less managed experience.
- PvP-averse player: Choose the current full-PvE multiplayer option; Funcom says it covers the Deep Desert and faction conflict as well.
- Persistent-world fan: Join an official public server and accept the shared population, World connections, and server rules.
- Offline-only buyer: Do not assume that single-player means no internet connection. The current statements confirm solo play, not a guaranteed offline mode.
