No. The unofficial D2R VR modification is limited by its own README to offline, single-player use. It is not an official Blizzard VR edition, and its author warns that injecting the modification while playing online can risk an account ban. The underlying Diablo II: Resurrected game does support online multiplayer with friends when you run the unmodified game and use online characters.
What “Diablo II VR” actually refers to
There is no official Blizzard VR edition of Diablo II: Resurrected. The name usually refers to the community project hosted in the D2R VR project README. It modifies the game to provide several headset-oriented views, including a first-person view and a mixed-reality floor view.
That distinction matters because the modification and the Blizzard game have different networking rules. Multiplayer support advertised for Diablo II: Resurrected belongs to the unmodified game. It does not make the VR modification itself a co-op mode.
The direct multiplayer answer
The VR modification is for offline single-player play. Its README states, “Offline single-player only.” The same document says, “Injecting code into the game online can get the account banned.” Those are statements from the community project’s author, not a Blizzard guarantee about every possible setup, but they are the relevant safety boundary for anyone using the mod.

How multiplayer works in the unmodified game
Online co-op player counts
Player limits depend on the platform statement you are relying on. Microsoft’s Xbox store listing describes Diablo II: Resurrected as “Online multiplayer (2-8),” meaning online co-op for two to eight players on that listing: Xbox store page.
Blizzard described a smaller limit for Nintendo Switch. In its console announcement, Blizzard said Switch players could group online with up to four players and explained that four-player co-op was considered a good fit for handheld play: Blizzard’s console announcement.

Do not treat the Xbox and Switch figures as interchangeable guarantees for every platform. They are platform-specific descriptions: up to eight on the cited Xbox listing and up to four in Blizzard’s Switch statement.

Online characters are required for online features
Blizzard says modern online features such as friend invitations require an online character. An offline character cannot simply be converted into an online character, and the two save types are kept separate. If you created a character while offline, it will not appear as an eligible online character when you try to join friends.
Blizzard explains the online-character requirement in its early-access and beta guidance: Blizzard’s multiplayer guidance. Its launch guide also distinguishes the game’s online and offline progression: Blizzard’s launch guide.
Old TCP/IP play is not an option
Players familiar with the original Diablo II may remember direct TCP/IP games. That method is not available in Resurrected. Blizzard stated, “TCP/IP support will not be available in the upcoming Beta or the final game,” citing security-risk considerations. Friends must use the game’s supported online service rather than trying to recreate a direct TCP/IP session.
Why the VR modification cannot be combined with online co-op
It injects code into the game
The project is a code-injection modification rather than a Blizzard-maintained game mode. The README explicitly warns that injecting code into the game online can get the account banned. That wording describes a risk, not an assertion that a ban is automatic every time, but it is strong enough that online experimentation is an unsafe choice.

Blizzard does not endorse or support the project. The README also disclaims Blizzard endorsement. If an online account is restricted after using injected code, the community project should not be treated as an official support channel.
Offline and online saves are different
Offline characters are designed for local, offline progression. Online characters are created and managed for the game’s online environment, where invitations and party play are available. Switching a character from one category to the other is not a workaround for the VR restriction. You need an online character in a clean online session to play with friends.
VR modification versus normal online play
| Aspect | Unmodified Diablo II: Resurrected | D2R VR community modification |
|---|---|---|
| Official status | Blizzard’s released game | Unofficial community project; the README says it is not made, endorsed, or supported by Blizzard (project README) |
| Multiplayer | Supported online; the Xbox listing states 2–8 players (Xbox listing) | README limits it to offline single-player (project README) |
| Character type for the relevant mode | Online characters for invitations and online parties | Offline character and local progression |
| Code injection | Not required | Used by the modification; the author warns against online injection |
| TCP/IP direct games | Not available in the final game, according to Blizzard (Blizzard announcement) | Not restored by the modification |
How to play with friends without risking the modded setup
The safest approach is to treat VR play and online play as separate sessions. The following procedure follows the project’s offline warning and Blizzard’s online-character rules.
Recommended Free Tools
- Exit the VR-modified session completely. Do not leave injected code active while switching to an online character or joining a friend.
- Launch the unmodified game. Use a clean installation or otherwise ensure the community modification is not loaded. The VR headset itself does not add multiplayer; it is only an input and display device for the modified experience.
- Create or select an online character. Blizzard says friend invites and comparable online features require this character type. An offline character remains separate.
- Use the game’s supported online social and party controls. Invite or join friends through the platform and game services available for your edition. Do not attempt a TCP/IP connection; Blizzard removed that option from the final game.
- Keep the two modes separate. Return to the VR project only for an offline session, and do not load the injection into the online session.
Because the community project is not an official Blizzard product, its README is the authoritative place for its current installation and headset instructions. Those instructions can change independently of Blizzard’s online service.

What you need for each experience
For VR single-player
- A compatible copy of Diablo II: Resurrected and the community D2R VR project.
- A VR headset and the hardware/software configuration described by the project’s current README.
- An offline character and an offline session.
- Willingness to troubleshoot an unofficial modification without Blizzard support.
The project documentation describes headset play and integrations intended for room-scale or body-movement-oriented use. It does not turn the game into a networked VR co-op product.
For online play with friends
- The unmodified game client.
- An online character; offline saves are not eligible for online invitations.
- An account and platform connection that can access the game’s online service.
- Friends playing on supported versions and platforms, subject to each platform’s player limit.
Diablo II: Resurrected was released digitally; Blizzard’s launch guide says there are no physical versions. That affects how you obtain the game, but it does not change the distinction between online and offline characters.

Assuming the base game’s eight-player listing applies to VR
The “2–8” figure comes from the Xbox store description of the unmodified game. It is not a specification for the VR project. The project’s own README sets a stricter limit: offline single-player.
Trying an online character inside the mod
Selecting an online character does not make injected VR code safe. The project warning concerns injecting code into online play, regardless of which character you select. Use the unmodified client for that character.

Expecting offline progress to appear online
Offline and online saves are separate. Loot, levels, and progression made with an offline character should not be expected to transfer to an online character or party.
Looking for a TCP/IP toggle
There is no supported TCP/IP mode in the final game. Guides for the original release that instruct you to host a direct TCP/IP game do not describe Resurrected’s supported networking.
Assuming Blizzard will troubleshoot the modification
The project is not made, endorsed, or supported by Blizzard. For an online problem, first remove the modification and reproduce the issue in the clean game client before contacting official support. Do not provide account credentials to an unofficial project or download replacement files from an unverified source.
Platform-specific expectations
On Xbox, the cited store listing describes online multiplayer for two to eight players. On Nintendo Switch, Blizzard’s announcement describes groups of up to four. Other platform editions may expose different interface wording or account flows, so check the current platform listing and Blizzard documentation for the edition you own rather than assuming the Xbox number applies everywhere.
The VR modification should be considered a separate, unofficial headset experiment rather than a cross-platform feature. The available project information establishes its offline limitation, not a supported path for console VR or cross-platform VR parties.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for different goals
- Want to experience Sanctuary in a headset alone? The community D2R VR project is designed for that offline use case, subject to its README and hardware requirements.
- Want to party with friends? Launch the unmodified game, select an online character, and use its supported online features.
- Want both at once? The documented options do not provide that combination. Do not inject the VR modification into an online session because the project author warns of account-ban risk.
