Usually, yes—but not automatically. Irdeto, Denuvo’s vendor, says Denuvo Anti-Tamper does not require a permanent internet connection after a game’s first online license validation. However, the publisher, game edition and launcher can impose additional checks. Steam also requires its own offline-mode preparation. Verify the exact game’s current license notice and test offline mode before disconnecting.
The practical answer
A Denuvo-protected game may work offline after it has been activated online and its launcher has been prepared. That is the general behavior described by Irdeto, which operates Denuvo Anti-Tamper: the first launch requires an internet connection so the platform can revalidate the license, while later launches do not require a connection.
That statement is vendor guidance, not a guarantee for every title. A publisher can require an online check during installation or launch, and a launcher such as Steam has separate requirements for storing offline-mode data. A patch, major hardware change, reinstall or account change can also trigger another connection request.
What Denuvo Anti-Tamper itself requires
First launch normally needs internet access
Irdeto’s Denuvo Anti-Tamper: Top Myths for PC & Console explainer (marked © 2020) says gaming platforms require users to be online at first launch for license revalidation. In practical terms, installing the game is not always enough: you may need to sign in to the relevant store, start the game once while connected and allow the license check to finish.

The check validates the copy against the account and platform that delivered it. It is separate from downloading the game itself, so a complete installation does not prove that the title has completed activation.
Subsequent launches may work without a connection
The same Irdeto document states, “Our technology does not require a permanent online connection.” Its qualification is important: after the first online validation, subsequent launches do not require an online connection under the general Denuvo behavior it describes.
“Offline” here means access to the installed game when the computer has no internet route. It does not make online multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, account services or other network-dependent features available. Those features can have their own requirements even when the single-player executable starts.

Events that can cause another online check
Irdeto says a game update or a significant hardware change can lead to a need to connect again. The document does not establish a universal timer, fixed revalidation interval or activation allowance. Do not assume that a title will request validation every set number of days, or that it will never request it again.
Why the publisher’s terms matter more than a general Denuvo statement
Installation and first-launch language can be conditional
SEGA’s general End User License Agreement says an online connection may be required during installation and/or first launch to activate a product and Denuvo Anti-Tamper. “May” is deliberate: the clause does not say that every SEGA game, or every Denuvo game, will behave the same way after activation.
Publishers can also add a license-verification step to a particular executable, installer or store build. The result depends on the title, edition, region, platform and current version rather than on the presence of the Denuvo name alone.

Recent product disclosures show the variation
Square Enix’s PC disclosures provide current, product-specific examples. They should be read as requirements for the named games, not as proof that all Denuvo-protected games require constant internet access.

Before disconnecting, look for the current support page, installer disclosure or license notice for your exact game. A store listing that merely says “Denuvo Anti-Tamper” is not a complete description of that product’s activation process.
Steam Offline Mode is a separate requirement
Even if Denuvo has completed its validation, Steam must have its offline-mode information saved locally. SEGA Support’s Steam guidance, updated March 20, 2025, gives this preparation sequence:

- Sign in to Steam while online. Use the account that owns the game and allow the client to finish signing in.
- Update the client and the game. Wait until downloads, shader processing and scheduled updates are complete. A queued download can prevent a clean offline start.
- Launch every game you intend to use offline at least once. Reach the point where the game has successfully started, then exit it normally.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline. Let Steam restart or switch modes as prompted, and confirm that the client reports it is offline.
- Close Steam normally before disconnecting. Do not force-quit the process or shut down the computer while the client is writing its offline data.
SEGA warns that forcing Steam closed instead of exiting properly can cause required offline-mode data to be lost. If that data is missing, Steam cannot start in offline mode until you reconnect and prepare it again.
Why a previous activation is not enough
A game that launched successfully yesterday can still fail today if Steam was never placed into offline mode, a download remained pending or the client’s stored data was damaged. Denuvo validation and launcher readiness are two different gates. Both must be satisfied for an offline launch.

- Confirm the exact store and edition: a PC release, console release, deluxe edition and subscription build can have different licensing components.
- Read the publisher’s current support page, EULA or installer-software disclosure for that product.
- Install all available game and launcher updates while connected.
- Start the game once and wait for any activation or license-verification message to finish.
- Sign in to the owning account and avoid changing accounts after preparation.
- For Steam, launch each intended title, exit normally and select Steam > Go Offline.
- Disconnect deliberately and test the game before travelling or relying on it during an outage.
- Keep a way to reconnect available in case a patch, hardware change or damaged launcher data demands validation.
When offline play stops working
The game asks for internet immediately after installation
Reconnect, sign in to the correct store account and launch the title again. The first-launch validation may not have completed, even if the download reached 100 percent. If the publisher’s disclosure says license verification is required, there may be no supported workaround for the initial check.

Steam says it cannot start offline
Reconnect to the internet and repeat the Steam sequence: finish all downloads, launch the game once, exit normally and select Steam > Go Offline. A forced shutdown can remove the data Steam needs. Test the mode while still connected by switching offline before you leave your network.
An update or hardware change triggered a new check
Reconnect and allow the game to validate again. Irdeto specifically identifies game updates and significant hardware changes as events that can require a connection. The evidence does not define which hardware changes count or how long a new validation remains valid, so do not rely on an assumed grace period.
A reinstall or account switch removed offline access
Reinstallation creates a new local setup, and changing accounts can invalidate the license context used by the launcher. Sign in with the owning account, complete the first launch and rebuild offline-mode data. If the title has a separate publisher launcher, follow that launcher’s current offline instructions as well.

This is expected for services that depend on a server. Offline readiness only addresses starting the installed software and using features that do not need a live connection. Multiplayer matchmaking, cloud synchronization, server-side inventories and similar functions can remain unavailable.
How to check an exact game before buying or travelling
- Identify the product precisely. Record the platform, store, edition and current version. “The PC version” may still refer to different store builds.
- Find first-party requirements. Search the publisher’s support pages, EULA and installer-software disclosure for “internet connection,” “license verification,” “activation” and “offline.”
- Separate the checks. Determine whether the requirement applies to installation, first launch, every launch or only online features. Do not treat a multiplayer requirement as proof that the executable cannot start offline.
- Prepare the launcher. On Steam, complete the official offline sequence and exit normally. Other clients may use different labels and storage rules; follow their own support documentation.
- Test without a network. Disable Wi-Fi and wired networking, start the game and exercise the offline content you need. Restore connectivity if activation or an update is requested.
- Repeat after major changes. Recheck requirements after patches, reinstallations, account changes or significant hardware upgrades.
Common assumptions that are unsafe
- “Denuvo means always online.” Irdeto’s own description does not make that claim; it describes first-launch validation followed by offline-capable launches.
- “One successful launch guarantees permanent offline access.” Publisher rules, launcher preparation and later updates can change the result.
- “There is a standard activation cap.” The cited official materials do not establish a universal number of activations.
- “Every Denuvo title has the same behavior.” Product disclosures can add requirements, as the two June 2026 Square Enix examples demonstrate.
- “Closing the laptop is the same as preparing offline mode.” Steam must be switched to offline mode and closed correctly so its local data is retained.
Bottom line for offline players
Denuvo-protected games are often playable offline after an online first launch, but the answer is title-specific. Irdeto says Denuvo Anti-Tamper does not require a permanent connection; publisher terms can require license verification, and Steam needs its own offline preparation. Check the exact product’s current documentation, finish every update, launch it once while connected, use the launcher’s offline mode and test the result before you depend on it without internet.
