Yes, but not universally. Cloud gaming input depends on the service, the device running its app or browser, and the individual game. A compatible controller is the safest choice for console-style cloud play. Keyboard and mouse work reliably in some computer-based setups, yet may be limited to app navigation on a TV or blocked by a particular mobile game.

Before buying an accessory, identify the exact service, client device, and game. The same controller, keyboard, or mouse can work on a Windows computer but fail on a smart TV, phone, or tablet because each client has different support rules.

Why cloud-game controls are conditional

Cloud gaming streams video from a remote server while sending your button presses and mouse movements back to that server. The service must therefore recognize the input device, the client app or browser must be allowed to receive it, and the game itself must support that control scheme. A failure at any one of those layers can make a working device appear incompatible.

Service support is different from game support

A provider may advertise controller compatibility for its catalog without promising that every title accepts a keyboard and mouse. Some games expose their own input rules, and a touch interface may be available only in selected titles. Treat a service-wide setup requirement as a starting point, then verify the game.

App navigation is not gameplay

Keyboard and mouse may move through a cloud-gaming app even when they cannot control a game. This distinction is especially important on televisions. A cursor moving around menus does not prove that mouse clicks or keyboard keys will reach the streamed game.

At-a-glance comparison

Service or setup Controller during gameplay Keyboard and mouse during gameplay Important device or game caveat
GeForce NOW on Windows or Mac computers Supported Xbox and PlayStation gamepads, including DualSense and DualShock 4; other models may work with drivers or updates Supported on computer platforms when the game supports those inputs; NVIDIA recommends a USB gaming mouse Compatibility is still title-specific
GeForce NOW on TVs Required supported gamepad for playing games Physical keyboard and mouse are limited to navigating the app NVIDIA states that keyboard and mouse cannot be used to play games on TVs
Xbox Cloud Gaming Current setup guidance calls for a compatible controller over Bluetooth or USB Not a service-wide promise; check the exact game and client Selected games offer touch controls; access also depends on eligible plan or free-to-play status, device, region, and browser
Amazon Luna on Mac, Windows, or Chromebook Supported controller families vary by device Mouse and keyboard are listed for these computer platforms Some browsers request permission for keyboard and mouse input
Amazon Luna on TV or mobile categories Compatibility differs by Fire TV, tablet, Samsung TV, LG TV, computer, and mobile category Do not assume computer support transfers to these clients Third-party controllers may need drivers, and some features may be unavailable
Fortnite on mobile devices Controller use depends on the mobile and cloud client Mouse and keyboard are not supported on mobile, including play through Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, or Amazon Luna This is a Fortnite-and-mobile rule, not a blanket rule for every cloud game

GeForce NOW: strongest computer support, strict TV limitation

On computer platforms, NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements recognize keyboard-and-mouse play for compatible games and recommend a USB gaming mouse. The same requirements list Microsoft Xbox gamepads and Sony DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers. Additional controllers can work, but may require a driver or a firmware/software update.

Playing on a television

TV support is narrower than computer support. NVIDIA’s wording is explicit: “You can only use a physical keyboard and mouse to navigate the app. You must use a supported gamepad to play games on TVs.” If your plan is to play from a television or a TV streaming device, buy or pair a supported gamepad rather than expecting a keyboard and mouse to control the game.

Phones, tablets, and SHIELD devices

GeForce NOW publishes separate controller information for Android and iOS clients and lists the SHIELD controller for SHIELD TV. Device-specific lists matter: a gamepad accepted on a computer or SHIELD device is not automatically accepted by every mobile client. NVIDIA also recommends a gamepad clip for attaching a controller to a phone, which is an ergonomic accessory rather than a compatibility requirement.

Mouse stutter troubleshooting

If a mouse stutters in GeForce NOW, NVIDIA suggests trying a 125 Hz polling rate. That is a troubleshooting value, not a universal best setting. Change the polling rate only when you are diagnosing stutter; it does not add keyboard-and-mouse support to a client that lacks it.

Xbox Cloud Gaming: start with a controller

Xbox’s current getting-started guidance tells players to connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB. Selected games provide Xbox touch controls, but touch availability is a title-level feature rather than a guarantee for the catalog.

Supported places to play

Xbox describes cloud play across Windows PCs, Apple and Android mobile devices, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and selected Meta Quest headsets. Availability depends on the supported region, device, game, and subscription eligibility. When playing through xbox.com, the browser itself must be supported.

What this means for keyboard and mouse

Do not treat Xbox Cloud Gaming’s controller setup as proof that every game accepts a keyboard and mouse. The safe recommendation is a compatible controller unless the specific title and client documentation say otherwise. A computer browser may expose keyboard input, but that does not establish keyboard-and-mouse gameplay across TVs, phones, or the entire catalog.

Fortnite on mobile

Epic states that mouse and keyboard cannot be used with Fortnite on mobile devices, including when Fortnite is launched through Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, or Amazon Luna. The limitation is attached to Fortnite on mobile; it should not be generalized to Fortnite on every platform or to every other cloud game.

Amazon Luna: clearest official support for both input styles

Amazon Luna’s overview says most games need either a controller or a mouse and keyboard. Its GameNight titles can use a phone as a controller, while other games require a physical controller or computer-style inputs.

Computer clients

Luna’s compatibility table lists mouse and keyboard for Mac, Windows, and Chromebook. That makes a computer client the most straightforward Luna setup for games designed around traditional PC controls. The game still has to implement those controls; the table describes client capability, not a promise for every title.

Controller choices and device differences

Amazon names Xbox, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Razer Kishi controllers as compatible examples. The detailed table separates controller support for Fire TV and tablets, Samsung TVs, LG TVs, computers, and mobile devices. A third-party controller may need a driver, and Amazon warns that not all features are necessarily available with every compatible controller.

Browser permissions

Some browsers require explicit permission before a website can receive keyboard and mouse input. If Chrome displays a permission request while you are setting up Luna, allow it or the controls may appear dead even though the hardware is connected. This permission is separate from the game’s own input support.

What works on phones and tablets?

Mobile cloud gaming is not interchangeable with computer cloud gaming. A phone may accept a Bluetooth gamepad while rejecting a mouse, and a tablet’s browser or app may expose a different set of controls. Touch controls can exist for one title and be absent from another.

Use a controller when mobile support is uncertain

A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is the most dependable mobile choice among the services described here. Check the service’s mobile-device list and the game’s requirements before purchasing. A phone clip can make a controller easier to hold, but it does not change which controllers the client recognizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer mobile keyboard support from a desktop browser

Even when a service supports keyboard and mouse on Windows or Mac, that support may not carry over to an Android or iOS client. Fortnite’s mobile rule demonstrates why the title and device must be named together: cloud delivery does not bypass the game’s mobile input policy.

How to verify compatibility before you buy

  1. Name the client device. Decide whether you will play on a Windows or Mac computer, Chromebook, phone, tablet, television, console, Fire TV, or another streaming device.
  2. Read the service’s device-specific requirements. Look for the section for your exact operating system and client, not just the service’s general controller page.
  3. Check the game’s input rule. Confirm whether the title accepts controller, keyboard and mouse, touch, or a combination during gameplay.
  4. Separate navigation from play. If a document says keyboard and mouse can navigate the app, look for a separate statement about controlling games.
  5. Confirm the connection method. Verify whether Bluetooth or USB is supported and whether a wired connection is required for your device.
  6. Check permissions and drivers. Allow browser keyboard-and-mouse access when prompted and install any driver or firmware update required for a third-party controller.
  7. Test before adding accessories. Pair the device, launch the intended game, and verify movement, buttons, pointer input, and text entry. A successful pairing screen alone is not a gameplay test.

Setup guidance by input type

Controller

  • Use a model listed for the service and client you intend to use.
  • Connect over Bluetooth or USB according to the service instructions.
  • Update the controller if the service or manufacturer requires firmware support.
  • On a TV client, assume a gamepad is required unless the service explicitly says otherwise.

Keyboard and mouse

  • Prefer a Windows, Mac, or Chromebook client when the game is designed for PC controls.
  • Use a USB gaming mouse for a direct, low-complexity computer connection when recommended by the service.
  • Grant browser permissions for keyboard and mouse input.
  • Do not expect this setup to control games on a TV client that limits these devices to app navigation.

Touch controls

  • Use touch only where the game and service identify it as supported.
  • Remember that a touch-enabled title does not imply controller or keyboard support on the same mobile client.

Common failure modes and fixes

The device works in menus but not in the game

This usually indicates navigation support without gameplay support. Recheck the client’s gameplay-input statement and the individual game’s controls. On a TV using GeForce NOW, switch to a supported gamepad.

The controller pairs but buttons do nothing

Confirm that the model is supported for that client, connect it before launching the game, and install any required driver or firmware update. Third-party controllers may pair at the operating-system level while still lacking full service features.

Keyboard input is ignored in a browser

Look for a browser permission prompt and allow keyboard-and-mouse access. Then verify that the game, not merely the Luna or other service interface, supports keyboard controls.

The mouse stutters

On GeForce NOW, try reducing the mouse polling rate to 125 Hz as NVIDIA suggests. If the problem is instead that the client does not accept mouse gameplay, changing polling rate will not solve it; use the supported input for that device.

What to buy for each situation

Your planned setup Most defensible hardware choice Reason and limitation
Cloud gaming on a Windows or Mac computer with PC-style games USB gaming mouse plus a compatible keyboard, or a supported controller GeForce NOW recommends a USB gaming mouse, and Luna lists mouse and keyboard on these platforms; individual games still decide input support
Cloud gaming on a TV Supported Bluetooth or USB game controller GeForce NOW requires a supported gamepad for TV gameplay; keyboard and mouse are limited to app navigation there
Xbox Cloud Gaming across devices Compatible Bluetooth or USB controller Xbox’s current setup guidance requires one, while selected titles may additionally offer touch controls
Handheld phone play Compatible mobile controller and optional phone clip A clip improves handling but cannot override mobile-client or game restrictions

Choose the hardware only after matching it to the service, client, and game. A mouse cannot unlock TV gameplay where the service forbids it, and a controller that works on one client may need a driver or may lose features on another.

The practical verdict

Cloud games can be played with controllers, and controllers are the broadest, safest option across TVs, consoles, computers, and mobile devices. Keyboard and mouse are a strong choice for supported computer clients, particularly on GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna, but they are not universal. On GeForce NOW TVs they navigate the app rather than play games; Xbox Cloud Gaming’s current general setup centers on a controller; and Fortnite blocks keyboard and mouse on mobile cloud play. Verify the exact service, device, and title before spending money on accessories.
