Yes—but the answer changes by game. Warcraft III: Reforged can run offline after you install and update it through Battle.net, while the legacy Warcraft III 1.29 client supports offline and LAN play. World of Warcraft Classic is an online service and cannot be played without a connection. Steam Deck can run Blizzard games through the Battle.net launcher and Proton, but that is a non-native compatibility setup. WoW Classic has explicit support for compatible Macs running macOS 10.13 or later.

Quick answer by game and platform

Game or version Offline play Steam Deck macOS Launcher and account requirement
Warcraft III: Reforged Yes, after online installation and updates. Matchmaking and social features are unavailable offline. Possible through Battle.net and Proton; not a native Steam release. Current native support is not established here. Battle.net installation and initial account setup.
Warcraft III Legacy 1.29 Yes, including LAN play, according to Blizzard forum guidance. Possible only through a compatible Windows-client workflow; maintenance may be required. Current native support is not established here. Legacy Blizzard client and its installation path.
World of Warcraft Classic No. It is an online service that requires internet access and active game time or a subscription. Possible through Battle.net and Proton, with online service requirements unchanged. Official requirements list macOS 10.13 or later, Apple M1-compatible graphics, 4 GB RAM minimum and broadband internet. Battle.net desktop app plus active game time or subscription.
Warcraft I or II Not established by the current official information covered here. Not established. Not established. Current official purchase and support paths need to be verified separately.

How Warcraft III: Reforged works offline

Blizzard lists Warcraft III: Reforged among the Battle.net games with an official offline mode. Offline mode is not an installation-free option: Battle.net must first download the game, complete its updates and finish the initial account setup while you are connected.

What you can do offline

Once setup is complete, start the Battle.net app and choose Continue Without Logging In. Reforged can then launch for its offline-capable content. This is useful when you are travelling, using a metered connection or playing on a computer that is temporarily disconnected.

What offline mode removes

  • Online matchmaking is unavailable.
  • Social and account-connected features are unavailable.
  • Any feature that needs a live Battle.net connection cannot authenticate or synchronize while offline.

Plan the transition before you lose connectivity. Launch the game once online, allow every pending Battle.net and game update to finish, and verify that the offline start option appears. A computer that has never completed this process may not be able to start Reforged offline.

Does Reforged need the internet every time?

No for the supported offline session, provided the online installation and setup have already happened. However, Blizzard can change launcher behavior, and an update or account check may make a later online connection necessary. Treat offline access as a prepared mode rather than a permanent guarantee.

Warcraft III Legacy 1.29: the offline and LAN option

The legacy Warcraft III 1.29 client is distinct from Reforged. Blizzard forum guidance published September 25, 2026, says the 1.29 client continues to support the offline and LAN experiences that some players prefer.

Offline versus LAN

Offline play means using the client without an internet connection, typically for its local content. LAN play connects computers on the same local network and does not require Blizzard matchmaking servers. Those are different from Reforged’s online matchmaking: a LAN session can work on a private network while the wider internet is unavailable, but it still depends on the particular legacy client and local network configuration.

Why the distinction matters

Installing Reforged does not automatically give you the legacy 1.29 experience. If your priority is classic local multiplayer, identify the legacy client and its supported installation instructions before downloading anything. If you instead want Reforged’s updated presentation and Battle.net features, use Reforged’s own offline mode and accept that matchmaking and social functions disappear without a connection.

World of Warcraft Classic is not an offline game

World of Warcraft Classic is an online service, not a self-contained single-player Warcraft release. Blizzard distributes it through the Battle.net desktop app, and its current requirements list broadband internet. Blizzard’s WoW Classic primer says players need active game time or a subscription to access the game.

What happens without Wi-Fi?

If your computer has no internet connection, WoW Classic cannot connect you to its game servers, authenticate your account or load the persistent online world. Having the client already installed does not convert it into an offline mode. This remains true on a Mac, Windows PC or Steam Deck.

Game time and the launcher

Before troubleshooting a connection, check that the Battle.net account has active game time or a subscription. Start WoW Classic from the Battle.net desktop app, not from a standalone offline shortcut. The launcher handles account entitlement and the current game build before the game connects to its servers.

Can you run Warcraft on Steam Deck?

Steam Deck can run Windows software through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve documents installing other launchers and software from Desktop Mode. That makes Battle.net installation feasible, but Blizzard does not provide a native Steam release of these games. You are configuring a non-Steam launcher inside SteamOS, so compatibility and maintenance are different from installing a verified Steam title.

Install Battle.net on Steam Deck

  1. Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode from the power menu.
  2. Obtain the Windows Battle.net installer from Blizzard while connected to the internet.
  3. Open Steam in Desktop Mode and use Add a Non-Steam Game to add the installer.
  4. Open the added installer’s properties, select Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose an available Proton tool.
  5. Run the installer through Steam and complete Battle.net account sign-in.
  6. Install Warcraft III: Reforged or WoW Classic from inside Battle.net, then allow the launcher and game to update fully.
  7. Add the installed Battle.net launcher to Steam as a non-Steam game if you want to start it from Gaming Mode.

Menu wording and Proton versions can change with SteamOS updates. If one Proton tool fails, another available tool may behave differently; there is no single version that the supplied official guidance guarantees for every Deck revision and game build.

Preparing a Deck for offline Warcraft III

Do the complete Battle.net and Reforged setup while online. Launch the game once, finish updates and test Continue Without Logging In before leaving Wi-Fi. Valve says an installed game can generally be played while Steam Deck is offline unless that game requires an internet connection. That exception is decisive for WoW Classic: its service requirement remains, regardless of whether the launcher itself opens.

Deck-specific maintenance risks

  • A SteamOS or Proton update can alter how the Battle.net installer or launcher behaves.
  • Battle.net updates may require a temporary connection before the game starts again.
  • Non-Steam shortcuts can break when an install path or compatibility prefix changes.
  • Offline Reforged has the same feature limits on Deck as on a desktop: no matchmaking or social services.
  • WoW Classic still needs broadband access and valid game time or a subscription.

Keep a way to return to Desktop Mode and repair the non-Steam entry. If the launcher stops opening after an update, reconnect to the internet, check the selected Proton tool, run Battle.net directly from Desktop Mode and recreate the Steam shortcut if necessary.

World of Warcraft Classic on macOS

WoW Classic has explicit official Mac support. Blizzard’s current World of Warcraft requirements list macOS 10.13 or later, Apple M1-compatible graphics, at least 4 GB of RAM and broadband internet. Those requirements establish support for compatible Macs that meet the listed software and hardware conditions.

What the Mac requirements mean

  • Operating system: macOS 10.13 or newer is the minimum listed version.
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM is the stated minimum.
  • Graphics: the Mac must provide graphics compatible with Apple’s M1 requirements listed by Blizzard.
  • Connectivity: broadband internet is required because WoW Classic is an online service.

Meeting the minimum does not remove the account requirement: install the Battle.net desktop app, sign in and ensure the account has active game time or a subscription. A MacBook without Wi-Fi or another internet connection cannot play WoW Classic, even if the client is already installed.

Does this confirm support for every classic Warcraft game?

No. Blizzard’s current Mac requirements for World of Warcraft apply to the current WoW client and do not prove that every older Warcraft I, Warcraft II or Warcraft III build has a native modern macOS version. The available information also does not establish a current official purchase path or support promise for those older releases on macOS.

Is Warcraft III available on Steam?

The supported distribution path described here is Battle.net, not a native Steam release. On Steam Deck, you can add the Battle.net installer or launcher as non-Steam software, but that is a Proton configuration layered on top of SteamOS. It does not turn Warcraft III into a Steam-native game, and Steam’s normal compatibility badge or update workflow should not be assumed.

Choosing the right version for your situation

Your priority Most suitable option Important limitation
Play Warcraft III alone without internet after preparing once Warcraft III: Reforged offline mode Initial download and updates must happen online; matchmaking and social features are disabled offline.
Play classic Warcraft III over a private local network Warcraft III Legacy 1.29 It is a separate legacy client, not simply an offline switch in Reforged.
Play the persistent World of Warcraft Classic world WoW Classic through Battle.net Broadband internet and active game time or a subscription are required.
Use a Steam Deck Battle.net installed in Desktop Mode with Proton Non-native setup can need repairs after SteamOS, Proton or launcher updates.
Use a MacBook or iMac WoW Classic on a Mac meeting Blizzard’s listed requirements The requirements do not establish modern native support for every older Warcraft title.

Troubleshooting the common failure points

Reforged will not start offline

  • Reconnect to the internet and open Battle.net normally.
  • Allow both the launcher and Warcraft III to finish downloading updates.
  • Confirm that you have completed the initial account setup.
  • Close Battle.net, reopen it and use Continue Without Logging In to test the prepared offline path.

Battle.net will not install on Steam Deck

  • Return to Desktop Mode and add the Windows installer as a non-Steam game.
  • Open the entry’s properties and force a Proton compatibility tool.
  • Run the installer while online; do not test the process from Gaming Mode first.
  • If a Proton update changed behavior, try another available Proton tool and recreate the launcher shortcut.

WoW Classic opens but cannot connect

Check the network first, then verify Battle.net account game time or subscription status. There is no offline fallback for WoW Classic, so reinstalling the client or changing Proton cannot remove the service’s internet requirement.

A Mac is rejected by the installer

Compare the Mac with Blizzard’s current requirements: macOS 10.13 or later, 4 GB RAM minimum and Apple M1-compatible graphics. If the machine is older or uses unsupported graphics, the published requirements do not promise compatibility.

Bottom line

For offline play, choose Warcraft III: Reforged after completing its online setup, or the legacy Warcraft III 1.29 client when LAN support is the priority. Do not expect WoW Classic to work without internet access. Steam Deck can handle the Blizzard launcher through Desktop Mode and Proton, but it remains a compatibility-layer installation that may need maintenance. On macOS, Blizzard explicitly supports WoW Classic on systems meeting macOS 10.13+, 4 GB RAM, Apple M1-compatible graphics and broadband requirements; that support should not be generalized to every older Warcraft release.
