Yes. Steam currently marks Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as Steam Deck Verified, lists full controller support, and recommends playing with a controller. That is the clearest current answer for anyone deciding whether to install it. Verified status confirms compatibility with Steam Deck’s controls and operating environment, but it is not a promise of a fixed frame rate on every Deck, SteamOS version, Proton build, or game patch.

The practical target is a properly configured 30-fps experience. Steam’s published PC requirements are Windows-desktop targets rather than Deck benchmarks, and the only detailed Deck performance report in the available evidence is a June 27, 2025 community test on a Deck OLED. Treat that report as a dated example, not a universal preset. The game has continued receiving updates, including a Steam listing announcement for patch v1.5.6 on June 30, 2026.

What Steam Deck Verified means for this game

Steam’s current store page labels Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Steam Deck Verified and describes it as one of the top-played games on Steam Deck. The same listing reports full controller support and says the developers recommend a controller. For a Deck owner, those are stronger compatibility signals than an old forum workaround: the game is intended to install and operate through the normal Steam interface, and its controls are designed to work with a gamepad.

Verified is a compatibility classification, not a performance certification. It does not establish that every Deck model will hold 30 or 40 frames per second, nor does it guarantee identical results after a game update, Proton change, or SteamOS update. Loading time, image quality and frame-time consistency can still vary between the original LCD Deck and OLED models, between internal storage and removable storage, and between software versions. Steam’s label answers “will this run as a supported Deck game?” more reliably than it answers “what frame rate will I see in every scene?”

  • Carrying case with removable liner

What the label does establish

  • The current Steam listing recognizes the game as Steam Deck Verified.
  • Steam lists full controller support, so the built-in controls are an appropriate way to play.
  • The store recommends a controller, which matches the game’s turn-based combat and exploration interface.
  • You can begin with Steam’s normal installation and current default Deck settings rather than treating an old community tweak as mandatory.

What it does not establish

  • A guaranteed frame rate for LCD or OLED hardware.
  • A universal graphics preset that remains optimal after every patch.
  • That the official Windows requirements are equivalent to Deck hardware requirements.
  • That a particular Proton version, frame-generation tool or Decky configuration is required.

Storage and installation requirements

Steam lists 55 GB of available storage for the PC release and requires an SSD. These figures come from the published Windows PC requirements. They are the best capacity warning available for a Deck installation, but they are not a Deck-specific benchmark and do not make a microSD card mandatory. Install to whichever storage device you use, provided Steam reports enough free space and the device meets the game’s storage expectations.

Before you install

  • Check the Deck’s available space in Settings > Storage. Leave additional room for updates and shader or compatibility data instead of filling the drive to exactly 55 GB.
  • Install the Steam version from your library. The Verified status applies to the current Steam listing.
  • Keep the Deck connected to power for the initial download and first launch, especially if the game is installed on a removable card.
  • Allow SteamOS and the game to finish pending updates before judging performance.

The 55 GB figure is a published requirement, not a promise that the installed footprint will never change. Patches can alter the amount of space needed temporarily while Steam stages an update, so an installation that barely meets the listed number may still fail during an update if the drive has no working room.

Recommended first-launch setup

Because Steam currently marks the game Verified, start conservatively. The goal of the first launch is to establish a clean baseline before changing multiple variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the platform. From the Deck home screen, open Settings > System and apply any available SteamOS update. Restart if Steam requests it.
  2. Update the game. In Library, select Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, open its properties or update controls, and let Steam complete the current download.
  3. Install without compatibility overrides. Do not select an older Proton release or add launch options merely because an old guide recommends them. The Verified listing is the appropriate starting point.
  4. Launch while online. The first run may need to complete setup tasks and compile or cache data. Wait for the title screen before changing settings.
  5. Confirm controls. Use the built-in gamepad layout first. Steam’s listing reports full controller support and recommends a controller, so keyboard-style remapping should be treated as optional rather than a requirement.
  6. Play a representative section. Test exploration and a combat encounter, not just the opening menus. Note whether the issue is a steady low frame rate, a brief hitch, a visual artifact or a control problem.

Do not change resolution, frame limits, compatibility tools and every graphics option at once. A baseline makes it possible to identify which adjustment actually helps.

Graphics settings to try when performance is uneven

If the default experience is not smooth enough, lower the settings that most affect scene complexity and lighting. Make one group of changes, restart or reload if the game requests it, and then test the same type of scene again. A 30-fps cap is a sensible troubleshooting target because it reduces distracting frame-rate swings; it is not an official Deck requirement.

Use a 30-fps target first

Set a 30 FPS limit through the game or Steam Deck performance controls, depending on which control the current build exposes. A consistent 30 is generally preferable to an uncapped rate that repeatedly rises and falls. Watch for frame-time spikes during camera movement, combat effects and crowded environments rather than relying only on a peak number.

Lower the demanding options

A June 27, 2025 Deck OLED report used the following low settings while targeting 30 FPS:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Shadows: Low
  • Global illumination: Low
  • Post-processing: Low
  • Visual effects: Low
  • Foliage: Low
  • Shading: Low

That report recorded dips below 30 FPS in the prologue, then more stable 30-FPS play from Act 1 with occasional minor combat dips. It used Proton’s default compatibility tool and a Decky frame-generation configuration. Because it is a single community observation from June 2025, it should be read as one possible starting point rather than a current, universal preset. Later game patches, Proton releases and SteamOS changes can produce different results.

Preserve clarity while reducing load

Change the heaviest settings first and keep the rest at their default values until you know where the bottleneck is. If lowering all listed options makes the image unnecessarily soft, raise one option at a time and retest. The right compromise depends on whether you prefer cleaner lighting, denser foliage or fewer combat-effect reductions; the available evidence does not establish one best balance for every Deck.

Performance expectations: official numbers versus Deck evidence

Steam’s official requirements describe Windows PC targets. They should not be translated into a guaranteed Deck frame rate because the Deck uses a different CPU/GPU configuration, operating system and compatibility layer.

Steam listing tier Published target CPU Memory GPU Operating system Storage and API
Minimum 1080p at 30 FPS on low settings Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X 8 GB RAM GTX 1060 6 GB, Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB, or Intel Arc A380 6 GB Windows 10 55 GB; SSD required; DirectX 12
Recommended 1080p at 60 FPS on high settings Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 16 GB RAM RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB or Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB Windows 11 55 GB; SSD required; DirectX 12

These rows are useful for understanding the desktop release’s intended scale, but neither row is a Steam Deck test. In particular, the 1080p/30 minimum target does not mean a Deck will deliver 30 FPS at 1080p, and the 1080p/60 recommended target does not imply that a Deck can reproduce the recommended desktop experience.

How to diagnose dips, stutter and visual problems

If the game is usually below 30 FPS

  1. Confirm the game and SteamOS are fully updated.
  2. Apply a 30-fps limit.
  3. Lower shadows, global illumination, post-processing, visual effects, foliage and shading.
  4. Retest in both exploration and combat.
  5. If the result is still unsatisfactory, return to Steam’s default configuration and change one setting at a time. Avoid stacking unofficial launch options until you have a reproducible problem.

A persistent low rate after these steps may simply reflect the limits of the current software and hardware combination. The available official material does not provide a Deck benchmark that can identify a single universal fix.

If there are brief hitches

Record when they happen. A hitch only during the first visit to an area can have a different cause from a repeatable drop during every effects-heavy battle. Let the game finish its initial setup, keep enough free storage for update work, and test again after restarting the Deck. If a community tweak such as frame generation is enabled, disable it temporarily to determine whether the base game or the added configuration is responsible.

If controls do not behave correctly

Return to the standard gamepad layout and remove unnecessary custom bindings. Steam’s current listing reports full controller support, so a control failure should be investigated as a configuration or software issue before assuming the game lacks Deck support. Restart the game after changing the layout.

If an update changes performance

Check the game’s Steam news and update history before copying settings from an older guide. Steam’s listing announced patch v1.5.6 on June 30, 2026, demonstrating why a setting reported in 2025 may no longer be optimal. Re-test after major game, Proton or SteamOS updates instead of treating an old frame-rate report as a permanent specification.

LCD Deck, OLED Deck and software-version caveats

Steam’s Verified label applies to the supported Steam Deck platform, but the label alone does not publish separate frame-rate guarantees for LCD and OLED models. The dated community example was recorded on a Deck OLED and therefore should not be presented as a measured result for every Deck. Differences in display refresh behavior, power settings, storage and installed software can affect what an individual player sees.

Likewise, Proton is the compatibility layer used to run the Windows release on SteamOS. The report cited above used Proton’s default compatibility tool at that time; it did not prove that a named Proton build is required today. Unless the current game listing or a reproducible problem gives you a reason to experiment, keep the default tool and record any change before switching back.

Is a Steam Deck OLED required?

No. The available evidence supports playing on Steam Deck generally and does not establish that the OLED model is necessary. “Steam Deck OLED” is relevant when comparing hardware a reader may already own or may be considering, but no cited test proves that buying an OLED model is required for this game. Choose hardware based on your broader library, screen preference, battery and budget rather than treating this title alone as proof of a required upgrade.

A practical decision guide

Your priority Starting approach What to expect
Least manual setup Install the Steam version, keep the default compatibility tool, use the standard controller layout and begin with default graphics. The simplest path supported by the current Verified listing; exact frame rate remains device- and update-dependent.
Stable handheld play Use a 30-fps cap and lower the six demanding settings identified in the dated Deck OLED report if needed. A reasonable troubleshooting profile, not an official universal preset; dips can still occur.
Highest image quality Start at defaults, then raise one setting at a time after confirming the frame-time behavior in exploration and combat. Better visuals may require accepting lower or less consistent performance.
Experimenting with community tweaks Record the default result first, then change one Proton, launch-option or Decky setting at a time. More variables and more recovery work; older guides may not match patch v1.5.6 or current SteamOS.

Bottom line for Deck owners

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is playable on Steam Deck through the normal Steam installation, and Steam currently gives it the strongest compatibility label, Steam Deck Verified. Full controller support makes the handheld controls an appropriate default. Plan around a 30-fps target if you need consistency, and lower the listed lighting, effects, foliage and shading settings only when your own device shows a problem.

Do not treat the Windows minimum and recommended specifications as Deck benchmarks, and do not treat the June 2025 OLED report as a guarantee. Keep the game and SteamOS current, retest after updates, and judge the result in the scenes you actually play.
