Usually, yes. A game you claimed on Steam is tied to your Steam account, not permanently to the computer where you first downloaded it. To play it without internet, prepare Steam and the game while online, switch to Offline Mode, and test it before disconnecting. To use another computer, sign in to the same account and install the title; Steam can often copy the files over your local network, and a Steam Deck can be the destination. Games that require an always-online service or a separate launcher are the important exceptions.
What happens when you claim a free Steam game?
Claiming a free game adds an entitlement to your Steam account. The entitlement is what lets Steam recognize that account as allowed to download and run the title. It is not a license permanently attached to one hard drive or one Windows installation.
On a second compatible computer, install the Steam client, sign in to the account that claimed the game, and open the Library. The title should be available to install under that account. An installed folder copied from somewhere else is not sufficient by itself: Steam can leave files on a drive while refusing access if the account no longer owns the title or has lost access through Family Sharing.
“Free” describes the price to claim or download the game, not every rule governing its operation. Valve says free-to-play games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, while also warning that individual games may impose their own limitations. Those limitations can include online-only play, a required publisher account, or a separate launcher.

Can you play a claimed free game offline?
Steam Offline Mode is designed for this situation. Valve/Steam Support describes it as allowing you to “play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” Offline access is not automatic, however. You must complete the online preparation first, and the game itself must support starting without a network check.
Prepare the computer while it is online
- Connect the computer to the internet and sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
- Install the game and wait until Steam shows that the download, update, and installation are completely finished. Check the Downloads page for any queued workshop content, patches, or shader processing that could still be pending.
- Start the game once while online. Allow first-run tasks such as redistributable installation, file generation, graphics detection, license checks, and any required launcher sign-in to finish.
- Close the game normally. In Steam’s settings, keep your account credentials saved and leave Remember me enabled on the sign-in screen. Offline Mode cannot help if Steam has no usable stored login information.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline. Let Steam restart or confirm the mode change.
- Before leaving the network, launch the game from the Library while Steam is already offline. This test catches a connection requirement while you can still return online and fix the setup.
What can prevent offline launch?
- Always-online design: Some games contact a server for authentication, matchmaking, progression, or even the main menu. These will not become offline games merely because their download was free.
- External launchers: A title that hands off to another launcher or requires a separate publisher login may fail when that service cannot be reached.
- Missing saved credentials: If Steam’s stored login information is unavailable, Steam cannot bypass the requirement to connect.
- Incomplete first run: A game that has never completed its online setup may still be waiting for files, permissions, or a one-time account check.
- Changed game requirements: A later update can introduce a new online check or launcher dependency. Offline behavior is therefore a property of the individual title and its current build, not a permanent guarantee for every game you have claimed.
There is no universal percentage of free Steam games that work offline and no published, universal number of days that Offline Mode remains valid. Plan around the game’s own connection and launcher requirements rather than an assumed time limit.
How to use the game on another computer
The normal method is an account sign-in followed by a new installation. This works on another desktop or laptop that meets the game’s operating-system, hardware, storage, and driver requirements.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Install the current Steam client on the second computer.
- Sign in with the same Steam account used to claim the game. A different account will not inherit the entitlement simply because the files are present.
- Open Library, select the game, and choose Install.
- Select the destination drive and allow Steam to create or verify the library files.
- Launch the game once on that computer while online. Repeat any first-run setup and sign in to a required external service if the title uses one.
Steam’s account model means you do not buy the game again for each personal computer. It does not mean the same account can ignore Steam’s simultaneous-use, Family Sharing, or game-specific service rules. If the game disappears from the Library, check that you are using the claiming account and that any Family Sharing access is still active.

Can Steam move the files without downloading them again?
Yes. Steam Local Network Game Transfers copy installation and update files from one PC to another over a local-area network. This is useful when the first computer already has a large game installed and both machines are in the same home or office network.
Requirements for a local transfer
- Both computers must be running Steam and signed in online.
- The two Steam clients must be able to discover each other on the same LAN. Guest Wi-Fi isolation, firewall rules, VPN routing, or different isolated network segments can block discovery.
- The receiving computer must be signed in to an account allowed to install the game.
- The source installation must be complete enough for Steam to copy it; pending updates may be transferred as well.
Valve’s default transfer setting permits transfers between the user’s own devices. Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers documentation uses a home-PC-to-Steam-Deck example, so the feature is not limited to two traditional desktop PCs.
Transfer procedure
- Put both devices online on the same local network and open Steam on each.
- On the receiving device, sign in to the owning account and start installing the game from Library.
- Keep the source computer awake, connected to the LAN, and running Steam. Steam should detect the existing installation and begin copying local files instead of pulling the full payload from the internet.
- Let Steam validate the files and download anything that is missing or newer than the source copy.
- Launch the game on the receiving device once online, then perform the Offline Mode preparation there if you need to play without a connection on that machine.
A local transfer saves internet bandwidth and usually time, but it is still a copy of files, not a transfer of ownership. The destination account must have the entitlement, and Steam may need a small online download for a different build, operating-system files, or an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat about a Steam Deck?
A Steam Deck is another supported destination for a claimed Steam game. Sign in to the same account on the Deck and install the title from the Library. If another computer already contains the game, Steam’s local-transfer feature can copy the files to the Deck while both devices are online and visible to each other.

After installation, run the game on the Deck while online before attempting Offline Mode. Compatibility is a separate issue from ownership: a game can belong to your account yet perform poorly, require a control layout adjustment, depend on an unsupported launcher, or lack full Linux/Proton compatibility. Check the game’s current Deck compatibility information and test the exact title before traveling without a connection.
Offline installation, a second installation, or streaming?
These options solve different problems. Choose based on whether you need the second device to contain the files and whether the original computer can remain available.
| Route | Where the game runs | Network needed during play | What you need beforehand | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offline local play | The prepared computer | No Steam connection after preparation, if the title supports Offline Mode | Complete updates, one online launch, saved credentials, and an offline test | Fails for always-online games and titles dependent on an unreachable external launcher |
| Second local installation | The second PC, laptop, or Steam Deck | Online sign-in and installation; play can be offline only after separate preparation | The owning account, a compatible device, and enough storage | Each device needs its own setup and may need title-specific online services |
| Local Network Game Transfer | The receiving device after files are copied | Both Steam clients must be online and discoverable during the copy | Same-LAN devices, source files, and an account entitled to install | It does not transfer ownership and cannot fix incompatibility |
| Steam Remote Play or Steam Link | The original host PC renders the game; a compatible device displays it | Yes, the host and client need a suitable network connection while streaming | A running host PC with the game installed and a compatible client device | The second device does not get a standalone installation; latency and host availability matter |
When streaming is the better answer
Steam Remote Play and Steam Link stream a game from your Steam library to a compatible device. The host computer does the game’s rendering and keeps the installation, while the second device receives video and sends back controls. This avoids downloading a second copy and can work when the client device has limited storage.
Streaming is not an offline workaround. The host PC must be powered on and running Steam, and the network must be good enough for the video stream and input traffic. A weak Wi-Fi signal, high latency, congestion, or a sleeping host can make the experience unusable even when the game itself is fully installed.

Troubleshooting: the practical checks
The game is missing from the Library
- Sign out and back in with the account that claimed the game.
- Confirm that the title was actually added to the account rather than only downloaded during a temporary promotion.
- Check whether access came through Family Sharing and whether that sharing permission still exists.
Steam says the game is installed but will not let you play
Installed files do not prove current ownership. Verify the account entitlement first, then let Steam validate the installation. If the title depends on a separate launcher, install or sign in to that launcher while online and repeat the game’s first-run setup.
Offline Mode will not start
- Reconnect to the internet and sign in successfully.
- Check that Steam remembered the credentials and that Remember me was enabled.
- Finish all downloads and updates.
- Launch the game once online, close it normally, select Steam > Go Offline, and test again before disconnecting.
Local Network Game Transfer is not detected
Keep both Steam clients online, on the same non-isolated LAN, and awake. Temporarily check firewall or VPN settings that may prevent local discovery. Start the installation on the receiving device; Steam only has a transfer to use when the destination is requesting the game and the source files are available.
The game works online but fails away from home
Return to the network, check the title’s connection and launcher requirements, and perform a fresh offline test. If the game requires a live server for authentication or core gameplay, no Steam setting can convert it into an offline title. Use Remote Play instead when the host PC and a reliable network can remain available.
A reliable pre-trip checklist
- Use the account that owns the entitlement.
- Update Steam and the game completely.
- Launch the game online and finish every first-run prompt.
- Save credentials with Remember me enabled.
- Select Steam > Go Offline and confirm the game launches with the network disconnected.
- For another computer, install Steam, sign in to the same account, and install or locally transfer the files while both devices are online.
- For a Steam Deck, test controls and compatibility on the Deck itself before relying on it away from the internet.
The bottom line for each common question
“Can I play a free Steam game offline?”
Yes, if you prepare Steam and the game online first and the individual title does not require a live connection or external launcher.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
“If I claimed a free game, can I use it on my laptop?”
Yes. Sign in to the claiming account on the laptop and install the game, subject to the laptop’s compatibility and the title’s own requirements.
“Do Steam games follow my account to another PC?”
The entitlement follows the account. Files do not have to be redownloaded if Local Network Game Transfers can copy them, but ownership still comes from the signed-in account.
“Can I move a Steam game without downloading it again?”
Often. Use Local Network Game Transfers between online Steam clients on the same visible LAN, then let Steam fetch any files that differ.
“Will a claimed free game work on Steam Deck?”
It can, provided the game is compatible with the Deck and its launcher or online requirements allow it. Install or transfer it while online, run it once on the Deck, and test Offline Mode before relying on it away from a connection.
