Yes. An internal optical drive is not required. Connect a compatible external USB Blu-ray drive, install movie-player software that supports Blu-ray, and use a display chain that meets any copy-protection requirements. The drive only reads the disc; it does not automatically provide software for playing a commercial movie.
What you need for ordinary Blu-ray movies
Playing a commercial Blu-ray on a laptop, desktop or mini PC is a two-part setup: optical hardware and playback software. The external drive supplies the laser and disc-reading mechanism. A separate application decodes the movie menus, video, audio and copy-protection system.
- An external USB drive that explicitly supports Blu-ray. A DVD-only drive cannot read a Blu-ray disc, even if it uses the same USB connector.
- Blu-ray-capable movie software for your operating system. Seeing the disc in File Explorer or Finder proves only that the operating system can communicate with the drive.
- A compatible video-output path when protected playback requires it. The computer, adapter or dock, cable and monitor or television may all be part of the HDCP chain.
HP Support describes the software requirement directly: “The computer must have movie player software that supports Blu-ray playback.” Its Windows troubleshooting guidance also says that Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center do not play Blu-ray movies in Windows. Installing either application, therefore, does not complete the setup.
Choose the right external drive
Confirm the disc format
Read the drive’s specification rather than relying on words such as “optical,” “DVD writer” or “4K.” For conventional movie discs, look for explicit support for BD-ROM or Blu-ray playback. If you also need to write recordable media, check the listed BD-R and BD-RE formats separately.

It comes with a portable carrying case and 4 CD sleeves to effectively prevent scratches, avoid cable tangles, and keep your belongings organized and safe.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is a different requirement. A drive that reads ordinary Blu-ray discs may not read UHD movie discs at all, and a product marketed as “4K” can refer to upscaling, data storage or video output rather than UHD Blu-ray playback.
Match the USB connector and power
Check whether the computer has USB-A, USB-C or only ports supplied through a dock. A USB-C drive may still need an adapter for a USB-A computer, while a USB-A drive may need a USB-C adapter or hub. Confirm that the adapter supports data, not charging only.
Compare the drive’s required USB mode with the host port. The cited portable BRPUC6VED-series specification supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 2.0 and warns that operation can depend on power available from the host’s USB port. A bus-powered drive may work directly from one laptop port, require two plugs, or need an optional power supply depending on the computer and cable arrangement. Follow the manufacturer’s power instructions rather than assuming every port supplies the same current.

Verify support for both the physical drive and the intended movie application. “Works with Windows, macOS and Chrome OS” can describe basic disc recognition while the bundled player works on only one platform. The I-O DATA BRPUC6VED-series specification illustrates this distinction: its bundled player is Windows-only, macOS has narrower functions, and Chrome OS is read-only for the stated model. Treat those notes as model-specific, not as a promise about every external drive.

Playback requirements by computer platform
| Platform or use | What the drive may provide | What you must verify separately |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC, standard Blu-ray | USB connection and Blu-ray disc reading | A current Blu-ray movie application, disc support and, when required, an HDCP-compatible display path |
| Mac, standard Blu-ray | Model-dependent USB and data-disc functions | A macOS-compatible Blu-ray player; the built-in DVD Player app does not play Blu-ray |
| Chromebook or Chrome OS device | Often basic, read-only access depending on the model | Whether any supported application can play commercial Blu-ray movies; do not infer playback from drive detection |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Only a certified UHD-capable optical drive can meet this requirement | Player-specific CPU, firmware, security, HDCP 2.2 and operating-system requirements |
For Mac users, I-O DATA’s specification states in Japanese, “Mac標準搭載のソフトウェア「DVD Player」では、ブルーレイディスクの再生はできません。” The supplied translation is: “Blu-ray discs cannot be played with the DVD Player software included with Mac.” Connecting the drive is still useful for supported data-disc operations, but the built-in DVD application is not a movie solution.
How to set up an external Blu-ray drive
- Identify the disc. Check whether it is a standard Blu-ray, a recordable data disc or a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Start with standard Blu-ray if you are evaluating basic compatibility.
- Verify the drive specification. Confirm Blu-ray reading, the supported USB connector and mode, included cables, host-power requirements and the operating systems listed by the manufacturer.
- Connect directly first. Plug the drive into the computer rather than a monitor, unpowered hub or dock. If the drive has two USB plugs or an external power input, connect them as specified.
- Wait for operating-system detection. The drive should appear as an optical device. If it does not, try another port and the supplied cable before installing playback software.
- Install a Blu-ray-capable player. Use an application that explicitly supports movie Blu-ray discs on your operating system. Check its current licensing, update and disc-key support; a generic media player or the operating system’s file browser is not sufficient.
- Install required updates. Apply the drive firmware, player updates and operating-system updates recommended for the combination. Protected discs can stop working when a player or its authorization data is obsolete.
- Insert the disc and open it from the player. Select the optical drive inside the application. If the program offers a “Play disc” command, use that rather than opening individual video files from the disc.
- Check the display path. If playback reports a protected-output or HDCP error, connect the computer directly to a compatible monitor or television with a compatible cable. Temporarily bypass a dock, splitter, capture device or adapter to isolate the failing link.
Understanding HDCP and protected video
HDCP is a copy-protection handshake between the player and display. It is not a speed rating and it is not the same as the Blu-ray drive’s ability to read data. A disc can be recognized while the movie refuses to start because one component in the output chain does not meet the required HDCP version.
For standard Blu-ray troubleshooting, check the computer’s graphics output, any USB-C or Thunderbolt video adapter, the dock, the HDMI or DisplayPort cable and the monitor or television. HP lists an HDCP-compatible monitor or TV among its Windows Blu-ray requirements. A direct connection is a useful diagnostic step; once playback works, reconnect intermediate equipment one piece at a time.
Older displays may work for ordinary desktop video but fail the protected movie handshake. Conversely, replacing only the cable may not help if the dock or display is the limiting component. The player may also impose its own supported-output rules, so consult that application’s requirements for the exact version installed.

Why a recognized drive may still not play a movie
The drive appears, but there is no movie menu
This usually means hardware detection succeeded while playback software is missing, incompatible or not associated with the disc. Install or open a player that names Blu-ray movie support. Do not judge compatibility by whether folders such as BDMV are visible in the file browser.
The player says the disc is unsupported
Check the disc region, the player version and whether the application supports the disc’s protection system. Commercial discs can require updated authorization data. A data Blu-ray and a pressed movie Blu-ray are not interchangeable tests: the former may open as files while the latter requires menu and protection support.
The drive disconnects or stops during playback
Insufficient USB power, a marginal adapter, a long cable or an unpowered hub can interrupt the drive. Connect it directly, use the supplied cable, close other high-power USB devices and follow any requirement for an auxiliary power adapter. If the computer has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.x ports, test each port; the drive specification determines which modes are supported.

Mac recognizes the drive but will not start the film
Recognition is not proof of a macOS movie player. The built-in DVD Player application does not play Blu-ray, and the bundled Windows player supplied with some external drives cannot be installed on macOS. Confirm that a separate, current macOS application supports commercial Blu-ray playback before purchasing the drive.
Chrome OS reads files but offers no movie playback
Some models document Chrome OS as read-only. That can allow access to data discs while offering no supported path for protected movie playback. Check the exact drive and application documentation; do not assume that a Chromebook can use any Windows player supplied with the drive.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray needs a separate compatibility check
UHD Blu-ray adds requirements that do not apply to every standard Blu-ray setup. CyberLink’s published requirements for its UHD PowerDVD configuration include a certified UHD optical drive, specific Intel platform conditions, Intel SGX support, 4 GB of memory and HDCP 2.2 for external display output. Those are requirements for that configuration, not universal specifications for all players or computers.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Security and key distribution can also change after purchase. I-O DATA reports that bundled WinDVD UHD BD software for one BRP-UT6UHD/CK drive stopped playing UHD discs after AACS2 key distribution ended on October 1, 2023, while conventional Blu-ray playback remained available. This model-specific notice is why “UHD,” “4K” or “Blu-ray” on a product box should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
Use this UHD checklist
- Confirm that the optical drive is certified for UHD Blu-ray, not merely ordinary Blu-ray or 4K data writing.
- Confirm that the chosen player still supports UHD playback and receives the required security-key updates.
- Check the processor, chipset, firmware and any platform security technology named by that player.
- Check HDCP 2.2 end to end for external output, including adapters, docks, cables and displays.
- Verify memory and operating-system requirements for the exact player version.
If any item is uncertain, treat the setup as standard Blu-ray only until the drive and player manufacturers explicitly confirm UHD movie support.
Buying checklist for an external Blu-ray drive
- Disc support: standard BD-ROM reading, and separate confirmation for BD-R, BD-RE or UHD Blu-ray if needed.
- Connector: USB-A or USB-C, included cable, adapter compatibility and supported USB mode.
- Power: bus-powered operation versus an additional power supply for the intended computer or dock.
- Operating system: current support for Windows, macOS or Chrome OS, not merely historical compatibility.
- Player software: whether a license is included, which operating system it supports and whether it plays commercial movie discs.
- Maintenance: firmware updates, disc-key or AACS support and the manufacturer’s policy when protection systems change.
- Display: HDCP requirements for the player and the complete external-video chain.
The safest purchase is therefore not simply the fastest or cheapest USB optical drive. It is the combination whose drive, player, computer and display are all documented for the disc format you actually own. For ordinary Blu-ray movies, an external USB Blu-ray drive plus compatible playback software is sufficient in principle; UHD requires the additional checks above.
