No. BioShock and BioShock Remastered are single-player games on Steam Deck, and a second controller or Steam Remote Play Together cannot turn their campaigns into co-op. BioShock 2 has a separate multiplayer mode set during Rapture’s civil war, but its official Steam description does not identify cooperative campaign play. Steam rates BioShock and BioShock Remastered as Playable on Steam Deck, meaning they work but may need manual configuration.

The answer in one comparison

“BioShock multiplayer” can mean two different things: a cooperative story campaign, or any mode that lets more than one person play. The three Steam releases do not offer the same feature set, so the edition matters.

Edition Steam release date Listed game mode Steam Deck information Controller information What that means for co-op
BioShock August 21, 2007 Single-player Playable Not stated in the supplied Steam listing details No cooperative campaign
BioShock Remastered September 15, 2016 Single-player Playable Full Controller Support No cooperative campaign
BioShock 2 February 9, 2010 Single-player and multiplayer Not stated in the supplied listing details Not stated in the supplied listing details Multiplayer is a separate experience; the official description does not identify co-op story play

The practical result is straightforward: you can play the first BioShock and its remaster alone on a Steam Deck, but you cannot play their campaigns with a second person. BioShock 2 is the only release in this group whose Steam listing includes multiplayer, yet that label should not be read as “co-op campaign.”

BioShock (2007): a single-player game

Steam lists the original BioShock as Single-player. Its Steam Deck compatibility designation is Playable, so Valve considers it usable on the handheld, while warning through that designation that some manual configuration may be needed.

There is no cooperative mode listed for the game. A second gamepad can be connected to the Deck, but hardware input does not create a second player slot in software. If the game exposes only a single-player campaign, both people cannot control separate characters in that campaign.

The original release date is relevant when comparing store pages or searching for guides: Steam documents BioShock as released on August 21, 2007. That date identifies the edition; it does not indicate that the game has a later multiplayer update.

BioShock Remastered: better Deck-facing support, still single-player

BioShock Remastered is listed by Steam as Single-player and includes Full Controller Support. Steam also gives it a Playable Steam Deck rating. The remaster therefore offers the clearer controller-support statement of the two single-player releases, but its supported game mode remains single-player.

Remastering the graphics and updating platform support does not add a co-op campaign. You can use the Deck’s controls, or a supported external controller, for one player. You cannot start a second campaign participant through a second controller, split-screen option, or a Steam multiplayer overlay when the game itself has no cooperative mode.

Steam lists BioShock Remastered’s release date as September 15, 2016. When choosing between the two single-player editions, the relevant distinction for this question is not co-op—neither has it—but the remaster’s stated full controller support and its separate Steam Deck compatibility entry.

BioShock 2: multiplayer is not the same as co-op

BioShock 2 is listed with both Single-player and Multi-player features. Its Steam description presents multiplayer as a separate experience set during Rapture’s civil war. It refers to progression, maps, and competitive modes, and describes the multiplayer experience as something distinct from the story campaign.

That wording matters. A game can have a multiplayer mode without allowing two people to progress through its main narrative together. In the supplied official description, BioShock 2’s multiplayer is not described as cooperative campaign play. The listing does not promise a shared story, a co-op-specific character, or a two-player version of the single-player missions.

Steam documents BioShock 2 as released on February 9, 2010. The listing information available for this question does not establish a Steam Deck compatibility rating or controller-support label for that edition, so it would be inaccurate to assign it the same Playable rating stated for BioShock and BioShock Remastered. Regardless of that platform-status gap, the mode distinction remains: “multiplayer” in the listing does not establish campaign co-op.

What Steam Deck’s “Playable” badge tells you

Valve uses several compatibility categories to communicate how a PC game behaves on Steam Deck. The important distinction here is between Verified and Playable:

  • Verified: Valve says the game works out of the box.
  • Playable: Valve says the game works, but it may require some manual configuration from the user to play.

A Playable badge is therefore a usability signal, not a statement about the game’s feature list. It can tell you that the title is considered usable on the handheld with possible adjustments; it cannot add online play, local co-op, split-screen, or a second campaign character. BioShock and BioShock Remastered being Playable does not conflict with their single-player labels.

Compatibility ratings also should not be confused with a guarantee that every individual setup will behave identically. Valve’s definition allows for manual configuration. If a title asks you to adjust an input, display, or launch setting, that is consistent with the meaning of Playable; it does not indicate that a missing multiplayer mode can be enabled.

Can two people play on one Steam Deck?

The Steam Deck platform can work with more than one controller in games that implement local multiplayer. Valve also documents controller connections over Bluetooth or USB. Those capabilities are platform features, not universal game features.

For two people to play on one Deck, all of the following must be true:

  • The game must expose a local multiplayer or co-op mode.
  • The game must recognize the connected controllers as separate players.
  • The game’s own menus must provide a way to start that mode.
  • Any required online service or account connection must be available if the mode is online rather than local.

BioShock’s single-player listing fails the first requirement. BioShock Remastered’s single-player listing does as well. Connecting a second controller can be useful for another title that supports local co-op, but it cannot change either BioShock campaign into a two-player game.

Can Remote Play Together add co-op to BioShock?

No. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says developers can support Remote Play Together, allowing players on other computers or Steam Decks to join a compatible local multiplayer session. The feature mirrors or shares a game session; it does not manufacture a multiplayer mode that the game does not provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Remote Play Together to help, the host game must already have a compatible mode—typically local co-op or local multiplayer—and must expose player slots for the joining participants. BioShock and BioShock Remastered are listed as single-player, so there is no campaign slot for a remote participant to occupy.

BioShock 2’s separate multiplayer listing changes the question but not the answer about campaign co-op. Its official description discusses a distinct multiplayer experience and competitive elements, not Remote Play Together support for the story. Do not interpret a Steam overlay option or a successful controller connection as proof that the campaign supports a second player.

Online and offline requirements

Valve states that online multiplayer requires an internet connection. That rule applies to any BioShock 2 multiplayer session that depends on online connectivity; a Deck cannot join an online match without a connection.

Valve also says ordinary single-player play can generally be performed offline after installation, subject to game-specific requirements. “Generally” is important: offline behavior can depend on the individual game and its startup or authentication requirements. Before traveling, install the game and test launching it in the offline situation you expect to use rather than assuming every Steam title behaves identically.

For the first BioShock and BioShock Remastered, the absence of a co-op mode means an internet connection is not needed to find a partner for the campaign—there is no partner session to establish. An internet connection may still be relevant to downloading, updating, or any game-specific service requirement.

How to check an edition before installing

Use the Steam store and library information for the exact edition you own. The following checks separate feature support from Deck compatibility:

  1. Open the exact store page. Distinguish BioShock, BioShock Remastered, and BioShock 2 rather than relying on a franchise search result.
  2. Read the feature list. Look for “Single-player,” “Multi-player,” or another explicit mode label. A single-player label does not become co-op because another edition in the series has multiplayer.
  3. Read the multiplayer description. If multiplayer is described as a separate competitive experience, do not assume the story campaign is cooperative.
  4. Check the Steam Deck compatibility badge. “Playable” means the game works but may require manual configuration; “Verified” means it works out of the box.
  5. Check controller wording. “Full Controller Support” is a statement about input support, not a promise of multiple players.
  6. Plan for connectivity. Online multiplayer needs an internet connection. For a single-player game, test offline launching after installation if that is important to your use case.

This process prevents a common purchasing mistake: treating a controller-support label, a Deck badge, and a multiplayer label as if they were interchangeable.

Common assumptions that lead to the wrong answer

“Two controllers means two players”

Controllers are input devices. The game decides how many players exist and which modes are available. A second device has no effect when the title exposes only one player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Multiplayer means cooperative”

Multiplayer is a broad store category. It can describe competitive matches, a separate online mode, or cooperative play. BioShock 2’s description points to a separate civil-war-era multiplayer experience with maps, progression, and competitive modes; it does not establish co-op story missions.

“Playable means every feature works automatically”

Valve’s definition explicitly allows manual configuration for a Playable game. The badge describes compatibility and setup effort, not the addition of unsupported features.

“Remote Play Together can make any game co-op”

Remote Play Together relies on a compatible game mode supplied by the developer. It can share an existing local multiplayer session; it cannot create player slots in a single-player campaign.

Which edition should a co-op-seeking player choose?

If your requirement is a shared BioShock story campaign, none of the editions documented here meets it. BioShock and BioShock Remastered are explicitly single-player. BioShock 2 has multiplayer, but the official description treats it as a separate experience and does not identify cooperative campaign play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your priority is playing the story alone on a handheld, BioShock and BioShock Remastered are the editions with the documented Steam Deck Playable ratings. The remaster additionally lists full controller support. That may make it the clearer choice for a controller-focused Deck setup, but it remains a one-player game.

If you specifically want to investigate BioShock 2 multiplayer, read the current Steam listing for the exact edition and verify its present platform and connectivity details before installing. The evidence available here establishes that it has a multiplayer category and a separate multiplayer description; it does not establish a Steam Deck rating or promise co-op campaign support.

Bottom line

You cannot play the BioShock or BioShock Remastered campaigns cooperatively on Steam Deck. Both are listed as single-player, and both carry a Playable Deck rating. BioShock 2 is the only one of these releases listed with multiplayer, but that mode is described as a separate Rapture civil-war experience with competitive elements, not as a cooperative story campaign. A second controller and Remote Play Together can only help when the game itself provides a compatible multiplayer mode.
