Usually, no—but the reason matters. A game offered through Xbox Free Play Days is a limited-time trial and normally stops launching when the event ends. A Game Pass title is subscription access: you can play only while your qualifying subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. A game redeemed through the former Games with Gold program follows different rules depending on the console generation. Xbox One and Xbox Series redemptions require an active qualifying subscription, while eligible Xbox 360 redemptions were generally permanent licenses.
Downloading a game does not by itself prove that you own it. The entitlement attached to your Microsoft account—not the fact that the files are installed—determines whether the game continues to launch.
Three kinds of “free” Xbox access
Xbox uses several offers that can look identical on a console. They have different ownership status, expiry triggers and remedies.

The same title can appear in more than one category at different times. Check the wording on the offer or the game’s Store page before assuming that a download created ownership.

Free Play Days is a trial, not a free purchase
What the program promises
Xbox describes Free Play Days as allowing eligible members to try games “for free for a limited time.” That language is important: the offer grants temporary play rights, not a permanent license. A dated Xbox Wire event, for example, listed games as available from October 1 through October 4, 2026. Those dates define the event window for that promotion, not a permanent entitlement to every game in the lineup.
What happens when the event ends
When the listed window closes, the trial entitlement ends and the game normally stops launching. The game may still be installed, but the installation is not proof that your account owns it. Starting the title again generally takes you to a purchase prompt or another access requirement rather than restoring the expired trial.
How to continue playing
- Open the game’s Store page before or after the event ends.
- Check that the page identifies the standard purchase option and its current price.
- Buy the game with the Microsoft account that you use on the console.
- Launch it again after the purchase has been recorded on that account.
Buying during the event, if a purchase option is shown, is still a purchase rather than an extension of Free Play Days. Keep the receipt or order record if the game does not immediately recognize the entitlement.

Game Pass gives catalog access, not ownership
Why a downloaded Game Pass game can stop working
A Game Pass download is a way to access a catalog title while two conditions remain true: your subscription is active and the title is still included in the catalog. The download does not convert into a purchased license. If either condition ends, the game can refuse to launch even though its files remain on the console.
When a title leaves the catalog
Xbox advises members to use their subscriber discount to buy a game before it leaves the catalog. A removal date ends catalog access; it does not mean that the copy you downloaded has become yours. If you purchase the title, the purchase entitlement replaces the catalog entitlement and lets you continue playing without relying on that listing.
What to check on your account
- Open the Game Pass section and confirm that the subscription shown for your account is active.
- Open the game’s listing and look for a notice that it is leaving the catalog or is no longer included.
- If the title is leaving, use the member discount to purchase it before removal, or plan to finish playing before the listed date.
- After buying, verify the order under the Microsoft account used for the purchase; switching to a different account will not transfer the license.
Renewing the subscription restores access only when the game is still part of the catalog. It cannot bring back a title that has already been removed. In that situation, buying the game is the direct remedy if a purchase is available.

Games with Gold rules depend on the console generation
Xbox One and Xbox Series games
For games previously redeemed through Games with Gold on Xbox One, Xbox Wire stated on August 2, 2023: “You can continue to access any Xbox One games previously redeemed through Games with Gold in My Games and Apps if you remain a Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate member.” The same requirement applies when you play those Xbox One entitlements on an Xbox Series console through backward compatibility.

If the qualifying Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate membership lapses, the redeemed Xbox One game is not treated like a fully purchased title. Restoring the qualifying membership is the remedy described for continued access. The game must also be associated with the Microsoft account that performed the original redemption.
Xbox 360 games
Eligible Xbox 360 redemptions were generally treated as permanent licenses under the platform rules in effect for Games with Gold. That means an Xbox 360 title you redeemed can remain playable after a subscription ends, subject to Microsoft’s normal digital-license rules, account status and whether the title is still available to that account.

Do not apply the Xbox 360 rule to an Xbox One redemption merely because both games were obtained through the same program. The platform recorded for the redemption is the deciding factor. A backward-compatible Xbox 360 title can still be governed by its original Xbox 360 entitlement, while an Xbox One title remains subject to the subscription condition.
Finding an old redemption
- Sign in on the console with the Microsoft account that redeemed the game.
- Open My games & apps and search the owned or previously obtained games list.
- Check the game’s platform edition. An Xbox One edition and an Xbox 360 edition can have different entitlement rules.
- If the Xbox One edition is locked, check whether Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate is active.
Purchased games and retail codes are different
A game bought from the Store or redeemed with a retail code creates a purchase entitlement rather than a Free Play Days trial or a temporary Game Pass catalog right. It should remain available through the Microsoft account’s owned-games view, subject to Microsoft’s digital-goods rules and normal service availability.

Reinstalling the files does not move an entitlement between accounts. If the account is correct but the game is missing from the owned list, use the order history and the Store listing to distinguish an account-recognition problem from a discontinued or unavailable title.

Use this decision tree when a “free” game stops launching
- Read the original offer. If it says Free Play Days or shows a specific end date, treat it as an expired trial after that date. Buy the game to continue.
- Look for Game Pass branding. If the title came from the Game Pass catalog, confirm both your subscription status and whether the title is still listed. Renew access if the subscription ended; buy the game if the catalog listing ended.
- Check Games with Gold history. An Xbox One or Xbox Series play-right requires Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate. An eligible Xbox 360 redemption is generally permanent, subject to account and license conditions.
- Check for a purchase record. If you bought the game or redeemed a retail code, use the purchasing account’s owned-games view rather than the Game Pass or Free Play Days page.
- Only then troubleshoot the console. Once the entitlement type is known, reinstalling or restarting can address a local recognition problem; it cannot extend an expired trial or recreate a removed catalog listing.
What to do before a promotion or catalog listing ends
For a Free Play Days event
- Note the exact end date and time shown in the event notice rather than assuming the offer lasts through the entire day in your time zone.
- Decide whether you need permanent access. If you do, purchase the title while the Store page offers it.
- Make sure the purchase is made on the account used for play.
For a Game Pass title
- Watch the leaving-soon notice in the Game Pass catalog.
- Use the member discount to buy the game if you want uninterrupted access after removal.
- If you do not plan to buy it, prioritize completing the game before the removal date; renewing a subscription alone will not help once the title is gone from the catalog.
For a Games with Gold redemption
- Record whether the redemption was for Xbox One/Series or Xbox 360.
- Keep Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate active for Xbox One/Series redemptions.
- Use the original Microsoft account when checking an Xbox 360 license or reinstalling the game.
Common questions answered precisely
“I downloaded the free Xbox game. Do I own it?”
Not necessarily. A download from Free Play Days is a trial, and a download from Game Pass is catalog access. Ownership is established by a purchase, a valid retail-code redemption or an applicable permanent entitlement such as an eligible Xbox 360 Games with Gold redemption.
“Can I keep playing if I leave Game Pass?”
Only where another entitlement covers the title. A Game Pass catalog game requires an active subscription while it remains listed. An Xbox One Games with Gold redemption also requires Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate. A purchased game and an eligible permanent Xbox 360 redemption are different cases.
“Will renewing Game Pass bring back a game that left?”
No. Renewal can restore subscription access to titles still in the catalog. It does not restore a listing that has been removed; purchase the game if it is available for sale.

According to Xbox’s August 2, 2023 guidance, continued access requires Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate. That rule is separate from the generally permanent treatment of eligible Xbox 360 redemptions.
“Why does my old game appear in My games & apps but still show a lock?”
The list shows that the account has a relationship with the title, not necessarily that every condition for launching it is met. Check the platform edition, the active subscription requirement and whether you are signed in to the redeeming or purchasing account.
The practical verdict
Free Play Days ends with the event, Game Pass ends with the subscription or catalog listing, and Games with Gold depends on the platform entitlement. Treat the Store’s ownership record and the Microsoft account that obtained the game as authoritative. If the game was only a trial or catalog download, buy it before access ends; if it was an Xbox One Games with Gold redemption, keep Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate active; if it was an eligible Xbox 360 redemption or a purchase, investigate account and license status instead of assuming the download was temporary.
