Yes. JBL says Cove speakers can be used as a stereo pair and grouped into a larger whole-home audio system. The documented setup uses the JBL One app: connect the speakers to the same home network, create a system from one speaker’s product controls, choose the intended system option, and follow the prompts. JBL also requires every speaker microphone to be turned on while the system is being created.

The Cove lineup named in JBL’s support material includes the M1, P1, and X1. JBL specifically recommends adding a second Cove P1 for stereo. However, the available support instructions do not define every possible mixed-model combination, so treat stereo, multi-room, and soundbar grouping as separate use cases rather than assuming any two Cove models offer identical options.

What you can do with two JBL Cove speakers

JBL positions Cove as a whole-home audio system that supports stereo, surround, and multi-room listening. That means two speakers can serve different purposes depending on the system option selected in the JBL One app:

  • Stereo in one room: one speaker handles the left channel and the other handles the right channel, creating a conventional two-speaker image.
  • Synchronized multi-room playback: speakers are organized into a system so compatible products can play together in more than one room.
  • Home-theater playback: selected Cove speakers can be used with supported JBL Bar MK2 series soundbars for a more immersive setup.

These are system configurations, not merely a generic Bluetooth “pair” command. JBL’s published procedure is based on the JBL One app and the speakers’ network connection.

JBL’s Whole-Home Audio page describes Cove’s stereo and multi-room positioning. Its support article, “How do you create stereo pair/home theater group?”, supplies the setup workflow and identifies the supported Cove models.

Which Cove models are covered?

JBL’s support material names three Cove speakers for system creation: M1, P1, and X1. The evidence is strongest for using two matching P1 speakers in stereo because JBL’s P1 product page explicitly tells owners to add a second P1 for stereo sound.

Model What JBL explicitly documents What is not established by the cited material
Cove M1 Listed as an applicable product for creating a system; two M1 speakers can be used with a Bar MK2 series soundbar. The cited pages do not spell out every M1-to-other-Cove stereo combination.
Cove P1 Listed for system creation; JBL’s product page recommends adding a second P1 for rich stereo sound; two P1 speakers can be used with a Bar MK2 series soundbar. The cited pages do not provide a complete matrix for mixing P1 with M1 or X1.
Cove X1 Listed as an applicable product for system creation and therefore covered by JBL’s general grouping instructions. The cited material does not establish that X1 supports the specific Bar MK2 configuration or every mixed-model stereo option.

For the clearest documented stereo purchase, use two units of the same model, especially a pair of Cove P1 speakers. If you already own different Cove models, use the app’s available system options and do not assume that a combination shown for P1 also applies to X1.

What you need before creating the pair or group

  • Two compatible Cove speakers, or the additional JBL products you intend to include.
  • Each product connected to the same home network. JBL’s documented process is network-based, so placing one speaker on a different network prevents the setup from matching JBL’s stated requirements.
  • The JBL One app installed and signed in as required by the app on your phone or tablet.
  • Access to each speaker’s product controls in the app.
  • All speaker microphones switched on during system creation. JBL calls this out as a requirement for successful creation.

Put the speakers where you plan to use them before finishing the configuration, but complete the network and app setup first. If you are making a stereo pair, placing the two speakers on opposite sides of the listening position will make the left-right arrangement easier to evaluate after setup.

How to pair two Cove speakers in the JBL One app

JBL’s support instructions use the following sequence. The exact screen styling can change with an app update, but the key labels are “Product control” and “Create a System.”

  1. Connect both speakers to one home network. Confirm that each Cove speaker has completed its network setup and is visible to the JBL One app.
  2. Open the JBL One app. Select the Cove speaker you want to use as the starting point for the system.
  3. Enter product control. From that speaker’s controls, open the system-management option supplied by JBL.
  4. Tap “Create a System.” This begins the grouping workflow described in JBL’s support article.
  5. Choose the intended system option. Select the stereo, home-theater, or other system choice that matches what you are building. Do not choose a soundbar-oriented option unless your equipment is one of the combinations JBL documents.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts. The app will guide you through selecting the other speaker or products and completing the system.
  7. Keep every speaker microphone turned on until creation finishes. Turning a microphone off during this stage conflicts with JBL’s stated requirement and can prevent successful system creation.

After the app reports that the system has been created, play audio at a moderate level and verify that both speakers respond. For a stereo setup, check that the sound is spread across the room rather than coming from only one cabinet. If the app presents more than one system type, select the option that matches your goal instead of assuming that the first available grouping is a stereo pair.

Choosing the right system option

Stereo pair for one room

Choose the stereo-oriented option when you want two Cove speakers to operate as a left-right pair in the same listening space. JBL’s explicit example is a second Cove P1: the Cove P1 product page says to add another P1 for rich stereo sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A matching pair is the least ambiguous approach because both speakers share the same model designation and the product page directly describes that use. The support instructions do not publish a complete compatibility chart for combinations such as M1 plus P1, P1 plus X1, or M1 plus X1. The app may expose an option for a particular combination, but the cited JBL documentation does not guarantee that every mixed pair supports every stereo mode.

Multi-room system

Choose a multi-room-oriented system when the goal is synchronized listening across rooms rather than a left-right image in one room. JBL markets Cove for whole-home audio, and its support workflow creates a system from products on the same home network. The number and type of products you can include depend on the options the app presents for your installed models.

Multi-room grouping and stereo pairing are not interchangeable terms. A multi-room arrangement can synchronize playback without turning two speakers in one room into left and right channels. Select the system type that reflects the physical arrangement you want.

Home-theater group

JBL documents a related soundbar configuration: two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers can pair with JBL Bar MK2 series soundbars for immersive home-theater sound. This is a narrower claim than general Cove grouping. The cited information does not establish the same soundbar compatibility for Cove X1, so do not extend the M1/P1 soundbar statement to X1 without confirmation from JBL for your exact products and software.

Troubleshooting when the system will not create

The second speaker does not appear

Start with the two requirements JBL makes explicit: verify that both products are connected to the same home network and that all speaker microphones are turned on. Then reopen the JBL One app, select the speaker you want to use as the system’s starting point, enter product control, and begin again with “Create a System.”

The app offers a different option than expected

JBL’s support article tells you to select an option and follow the prompts, but it does not publish a universal menu for every model combination. Read the option labels carefully and select stereo for a left-right pair, multi-room for synchronized room-to-room listening, or home theater only for the supported soundbar arrangement.

A soundbar setup fails with an X1

The documented soundbar claim covers two M1 or two P1 speakers with JBL Bar MK2 series soundbars. It does not cover X1 in the cited material. If your intended system includes X1 and a Bar MK2, check JBL’s current compatibility information for that exact model before treating the failure as an app problem.

One microphone is disabled

Turn the microphones back on for every speaker and repeat system creation. JBL specifically says microphones must be on for successful creation; this is a setup prerequisite, not an optional audio preference during the pairing process.

What JBL has and has not promised

JBL’s general Cove messaging supports stereo, surround, and multi-room use, and its support page names M1, P1, and X1 for system creation. Those statements establish that Cove is designed to operate as a grouped home-audio system. They do not amount to a published compatibility matrix covering every cross-model pair, every stereo mode, or every soundbar combination.

The safest interpretation is therefore:

  • Two Cove speakers can be grouped for stereo or other system playback through JBL One.
  • Two matching P1 speakers are the clearest explicitly documented stereo example.
  • M1, P1, and X1 are the models named for system creation.
  • Two M1 or two P1 speakers are the combinations JBL identifies for use with Bar MK2 series soundbars.
  • X1’s support for that specific soundbar arrangement is not established by the cited pages.

JBL announced the Cove line on September 1, 2026, describing it as a whole-home audio system. That announcement quotes Carsten Olesen, President, Consumer Audio at HARMAN, calling the system a combination of JBL sound with flexibility for audio throughout the home. The announcement is product positioning, not an independent performance test, so it should not be read as a measured claim about volume, coverage, or sound quality.

Bottom line for your setup

Use the JBL One app to create the system: place the speakers on the same home network, open one speaker’s product control, tap “Create a System,” choose the correct system type, and keep every speaker microphone on while the app completes the process. For a straightforward stereo purchase, two matching Cove P1 speakers have the strongest explicit documentation. M1 and X1 are included in JBL’s general system-creation guidance, but mixed-model and X1 soundbar combinations require more caution because JBL’s cited pages do not define every permutation.
