Yes—but only when both speakers belong to a compatible Bose linking system. Current SoundLink Speaker Link models can play together in Party Mode, while Stereo Mode requires two speakers of the same model. Older SoundLink products use a separate Bose Connect compatibility list, and Bose SimpleSync serves a different smart-speaker or soundbar use case. Identify each speaker’s complete model name and generation before trying to pair them.

What “pairing two Bose speakers” can mean

There are three different Bose arrangements that are often confused:

  • Current SoundLink Speaker Link: compatible portable Bluetooth speakers play synchronized audio in Party Mode or, with two identical models, left/right audio in Stereo Mode.
  • Older Bose Connect Party/Stereo: selected legacy SoundLink products link through the Bose Connect app and their supported speaker controls.
  • Bose app grouping or SimpleSync: a Bose smart speaker or soundbar can be grouped with supported products, but this is not a universal way to make any two standalone Bluetooth speakers relay audio.

“Bose” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility. A SoundLink Flex from the original generation and a SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) use different linking ecosystems, for example. Record the exact product name, generation and, if relevant, whether it is a portable SoundLink speaker, a smart speaker or a soundbar.

Party Mode versus Stereo Mode

Party Mode sends the same program to both speakers, so it suits a larger room, patio or outdoor gathering where you want synchronized music from two locations. Stereo Mode divides the left and right channels between two speakers. It is the mode to choose for a more conventional stereo image, but it has the stricter requirement: the pair must be two of the same supported model.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Two compatible but different current models can therefore play together, but they do not become a left/right stereo pair. If the app or the speakers announce Party Mode for a mixed pair, that is expected behavior rather than a setup failure.

Current SoundLink Speaker Link compatibility

Bose’s current Speaker Link family includes the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), SoundLink Max, SoundLink Micro Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) and SoundLink Plus. Bose documents these models as able to link for synchronized playback. The exact behavior depends on whether the two models match.

Bose’s official description says Stereo Mode requires both speakers to be the same model, while Party Mode lets both speakers play synced audio. Why the generation matters

The original SoundLink Flex, sold from 2021, is documented with the Bose Connect app. The later SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) appears in the current Speaker Link family. Treat “Flex” as incomplete information until you confirm the generation on the speaker label, packaging, Bose app or product support page.

The same caution applies to names such as “Micro,” “Revolve” and “SoundLink.” A product name that looks similar may belong to an earlier Bluetooth and app system. Before purchasing a second unit, write down the complete name exactly as Bose displays it, including “2nd Gen” where applicable, and then use that name in Bose support.

Before you start: a compatibility and setup checklist

  • Identify both units: note the complete model name and generation, not just “Bose speaker.”
  • Choose the result: Party Mode is for the same audio on both; Stereo Mode needs two matching models.
  • Identify the linking ecosystem: current Speaker Link, older Bose Connect, or Bose app grouping/SimpleSync.
  • Update software: install available product updates in the Bose app before attempting a link.
  • Prepare one source connection: connect the phone, tablet or computer to one intended primary speaker first.
  • Keep the speakers close initially: moving them nearer makes discovery and the first link more reliable.

A phone’s ability to see two Bose products in its Bluetooth menu does not prove that those products can relay audio between one another. Bluetooth pairing to a source and Bose’s speaker-to-speaker linking feature are separate functions.

How to pair two current Speaker Link speakers

These steps describe the manual process Bose documents for current supported models. Button names and available app options can vary slightly by model.

  1. Confirm support. Verify that both speakers are SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), SoundLink Max, SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) or SoundLink Plus. Update both speakers if the Bose app offers a product update.
  2. Power on both speakers. Keep them near one another while establishing the link.
  3. Connect the source to one speaker. On your phone, tablet or computer, open Bluetooth settings, select the first Bose speaker and wait until it is connected. Audio must be streaming to this speaker before you start the Speaker Link flow.
  4. Start linking on the connected speaker. Press and release its Shortcut button. The speaker begins the linking prompt. If the button does not behave this way, check the model’s instructions or the Bose app; Shortcut behavior can be changed in the app.
  5. Confirm on the second speaker. When prompted, press the Shortcut button on the other speaker. Wait for the speakers to announce that they are linked.
  6. Check the mode announcement. Two identical models announce Stereo and their left/right roles when Stereo is selected. Different supported models announce Party, because mixed models use Party Mode.

Bose’s step-by-step instructions are in Linking Multiple Speakers for the SoundLink Max. Use the model-specific support page if your speaker has a different control layout.

Changing between Party and Stereo

After the link is established, press Shortcut on either speaker to change the mode when the pair supports both modes. On supported models, the Bose app also provides a Stereo (L/R) switch. Stereo is available only when both speakers are the same model; a mixed pair remains in Party Mode.

If you do not see the Stereo switch, first verify the model names rather than repeatedly trying to force the option. Two identical speakers may still need updates, distinct names in the Bose app or the correct model-specific control sequence.

What happens to the phone connection?

Your phone, tablet or computer connects over Bluetooth to the speaker that started the link. The second speaker receives the synchronized stream through Bose’s Speaker Link system. You do not need to create two independent Bluetooth audio connections from the source device, and attempting to do so can interrupt the link.

When changing sources, disconnect the current source cleanly and connect the new phone, tablet or computer to the primary speaker. Then repeat the Speaker Link sequence if the pair does not reconnect automatically.

How older Bose Connect speakers work

Some older SoundLink products use Bose Connect rather than current Speaker Link. Bose’s support page for the original Flex lists compatible Connect-era products including SoundLink Flex, SoundLink Color II, SoundLink Micro, Revolve Bluetooth Speaker II, S1 Pro System and Revolve Plus/Revolve variants. The exact list can depend on the product and software version, so check the support page and owner guide for each speaker.

For an original Flex or another Connect-era model, the usual process is:

  1. Install or open the Bose Connect app and allow it to discover both speakers.
  2. Connect your phone to the first speaker in the app.
  3. Use the app’s Party Mode or Stereo Mode control when the second speaker appears as compatible.
  4. Follow any instruction to press the speaker buttons or confirm the second speaker.

The original Flex support article explains that, without the app or a compatible speaker feature, the speaker can receive Bluetooth audio but does not automatically send that audio to another Bluetooth device. Read Bose’s original SoundLink Flex connection guidance before assuming a legacy model can join a current one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use current Speaker Link directions as a substitute for the Bose Connect instructions. A legacy pair may use different buttons, app screens and compatibility rules, even when the product names look familiar.

Speaker Link, Bose Connect and SimpleSync compared

System Primary use Compatibility and limits
Current SoundLink Speaker Link Link compatible portable speakers for Party or Stereo playback. Flex (2nd Gen), Max, Micro (2nd Gen) and Plus are listed. Stereo requires two of the same model; different listed models use Party Mode.
Older Bose Connect Party/Stereo Link selected legacy portable Bose Bluetooth products through Bose Connect. Compatibility is product-specific. The original Flex page lists Flex, Color II, Micro, Revolve II, S1 Pro and Revolve variants; verify the exact model.
Bose app grouping Group compatible Bose smart speakers for home audio. Only app-compatible products participate. This does not prove that two arbitrary portable Bluetooth speakers can link.
SimpleSync Send audio from a supported Bose smart speaker or soundbar to a supported Bluetooth product. It is a separate smart-speaker/soundbar feature, not a universal two-portable-speaker pairing method.

Bose’s list of products that support SimpleSync is available at Bose SimpleSync and grouping support. Bose also describes the feature for products such as a Bose soundbar and one Bluetooth speaker or headphones in its Soundbar connection guidance.

If your goal is a soundbar-plus-speaker arrangement, start with the soundbar’s Bose app compatibility and SimpleSync instructions. If your goal is two portable SoundLink speakers, use the Speaker Link or Bose Connect path instead. These systems should not be mixed just because all of the products carry the Bose name.

Placement, distance and Bluetooth limits

For the SoundLink Plus, Bose’s owner guide recommends keeping the two speakers within 30 ft (9 m) of one another and within 30 ft (9 m) of the streaming device, preferably in the same room or unobstructed outdoor area. This is model-specific guidance, not a guaranteed range for every Bose speaker. Walls, people, wireless interference, the source device and speaker orientation can reduce performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guide also says a SoundLink Plus can link to one other speaker at a time. Do not interpret that as support for an unlimited chain of speakers. Read the SoundLink Plus Portable Speaker Owner’s Guide for its placement and operating limits.

Bose’s current Speaker Link troubleshooting guidance cites Bluetooth range of about 33 ft (10 m), while the SoundLink Plus guide gives the more specific 30 ft (9 m) recommendation. Treat both figures as practical model or support guidance, not as a universal Bose specification or performance guarantee.

Troubleshooting when two Bose speakers will not link

1. The models are not in the same linking family

Check the full model names and generations first. A current Flex (2nd Gen) and an original Flex may not share the same setup path. A model that can connect to your phone is not necessarily capable of relaying audio to another Bose speaker.

2. The source is connected to the wrong device

Disconnect extra Bose entries from the phone’s Bluetooth menu, connect the source to one intended primary speaker, then begin linking from that speaker’s Shortcut control. Avoid trying to stream separately to both speakers from the operating system’s Bluetooth menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Shortcut is disabled or reassigned

Current Speaker Link setup depends on Shortcut. Open the Bose app and verify that Shortcut is enabled and assigned as expected. If your model uses a different button sequence, follow its owner guide rather than repeating the Max instructions.

4. Firmware or app software is out of date

Install available product updates for both speakers and update the Bose app. Restart the speakers after an update, reconnect the source to one speaker and repeat the link sequence.

5. The speakers are too far apart

Bring both speakers and the source device close together during setup. For current Speaker Link troubleshooting, Bose cites Bluetooth range of about 33 ft (10 m) on its support page, while the SoundLink Plus guide gives the more specific 30 ft (9 m) recommendation. Treat these as practical guidance rather than a universal guarantee.

6. Audio is delayed or drops out

Remove obstacles and wireless sources of interference, then move the speakers farther apart if Bose’s instructions recommend doing so for delay while keeping them within Bluetooth range. If the problem persists, forget the speaker in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart both speakers and pair again. Give two same-model speakers distinct names in the Bose app so the phone and app do not select the wrong unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. The app sees both speakers but offers no Stereo option

That is expected for a mixed-model current pair. Stereo requires two identical models. Select Party Mode instead, or use two matching supported speakers if left/right separation is essential.

8. One speaker links, then the other disappears

Check that both units remain powered on and that Shortcut is enabled on each. Move them into the same room, remove nearby obstacles and repeat the process with only one source device connected. If the app continues to show an incomplete pair, verify the exact model support page and install any pending product update.

9. You hear music from only one speaker

Confirm that the speakers actually announced a link rather than merely being visible in the phone’s Bluetooth list. The source should be connected to the primary speaker, and the second speaker should have been confirmed with its Shortcut button. If the pair is mixed, make sure Party Mode is selected; Stereo controls will not create a mixed-model stereo pair.

Choosing a second speaker

If you want to add a second unit, first identify the exact speaker you already own and confirm that the replacement supports the same Bose linking mode. For a current Speaker Link setup, a matching model is required for Stereo Mode; a different model from the current compatible family can provide Party Mode. For a legacy speaker, select from its Bose Connect compatibility list rather than assuming a newer product will join it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compatible second Bose SoundLink speaker is the relevant product category because it directly enables the two-speaker setup. Do not substitute an arbitrary Bluetooth speaker or assume that a cable or adapter will add Speaker Link capability. Check the complete product name, generation and Bose compatibility page before ordering.

Retail inventory and software support can change. Check Bose’s product-specific compatibility page immediately before purchasing, especially when the listing shortens a product name or omits its generation.

Quick decision checklist

  • Want the same music from both speakers? Use Party Mode, provided both models are in the same supported linking family.
  • Want left and right channels? Use two identical models that support Stereo Mode.
  • Own an original SoundLink Flex or another older model? Start with Bose Connect compatibility, not current Speaker Link instructions.
  • Want a soundbar or smart speaker to play with a Bluetooth product? Investigate SimpleSync or Bose app grouping; that is a different setup.
  • Cannot identify the generation? Do not buy a second speaker until the model number and Bose support page confirm compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pair two different Bose speakers?

Yes, if both are in the current Speaker Link family: SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), SoundLink Max, SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) or SoundLink Plus. A mixed pair uses Party Mode, not Stereo Mode. Older products must match the Bose Connect compatibility list for their system.

Can two Bose speakers play at the same time from one phone?

Yes, through a supported Bose linking feature. Connect the phone to one primary speaker and use Speaker Link or Bose Connect to add the second. Do not rely on two independent Bluetooth audio connections in the phone’s settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need two identical Bose speakers?

Only for Stereo Mode in the current Speaker Link family. Two different supported current models can play synchronized audio in Party Mode. Legacy Bose Connect products have their own product-specific rules.

Can the original SoundLink Flex pair with the Flex (2nd Gen)?

Do not assume it can. The original Flex is documented with Bose Connect, while the Flex (2nd Gen) belongs to the current Speaker Link family. Confirm compatibility on the product-specific Bose support pages before buying or attempting the link.

Can I connect more than two SoundLink speakers?

The SoundLink Plus owner guide describes linking to one other speaker at a time. Bose’s documented instructions here do not establish an unlimited chain, so do not promise that additional speakers will join a single link.

Why can my phone pair with both speakers but not play through both?

Phone-to-speaker Bluetooth pairing is different from Bose speaker linking. The models may be individually compatible with the phone but not with one another. Check the model and generation, then use the correct Speaker Link or Bose Connect procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does SimpleSync pair any two Bose Bluetooth speakers?

No. SimpleSync is intended to send audio from a supported Bose smart speaker or soundbar to a supported Bluetooth product. It is separate from portable SoundLink Speaker Link and is not proof that two arbitrary Bose Bluetooth speakers can synchronize.

What distance should I use during setup?

For SoundLink Plus, Bose recommends no more than 30 ft (9 m) between the speakers and no more than 30 ft (9 m) between either speaker and the streaming device, preferably without obstructions. Other models can vary, so begin close together and consult the model-specific guide.

Bottom line

Two Bose speakers can play together, but compatibility is model- and generation-specific. Current SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), Max, Micro (2nd Gen) and Plus speakers use Speaker Link: mixed models work in Party Mode, while Stereo Mode requires two of the same model. Older products follow Bose Connect rules, and SimpleSync is intended for a different smart-speaker or soundbar arrangement. Match the linking system first, then use the correct app and Shortcut procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pair two different Bose speakers?

Yes, when both are current Speaker Link models. Different supported models play together in Party Mode, but Stereo Mode requires two of the same model.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can two Bose speakers play at the same time from one phone?

Yes. Connect the phone to one primary speaker, then add the second through Speaker Link or Bose Connect. Two separate Bluetooth connections are not the required setup.

Do I need identical speakers for Stereo Mode?

Yes. Current Bose Speaker Link Stereo Mode requires two matching supported models.

Can the original SoundLink Flex pair with the Flex (2nd Gen)?

Do not assume so. The original Flex uses Bose Connect, while the Flex (2nd Gen) uses current Speaker Link. Check Bose’s model-specific compatibility guidance.

Does SimpleSync pair any two Bose Bluetooth speakers?

No. SimpleSync is for a supported Bose smart speaker or soundbar and a supported Bluetooth product, not universal pairing of portable Bose speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How far apart can the speakers be?

For SoundLink Plus, Bose recommends keeping the speakers and streaming device within 30 ft (9 m), preferably in the same unobstructed area. Other models may vary.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pairing works when both Bose speakers share a supported linking ecosystem. Current Speaker Link models can use Party Mode across compatible models, while Stereo Mode needs two identical models. Legacy speakers require Bose Connect compatibility, and SimpleSync is a separate smart-speaker or soundbar feature.
