Yes. Since August 31, 2026, Google has made a worldwide Search generative AI control available in Search Console. A verified site owner can exclude a property’s links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover.
The setting is broader than an AI Overviews-only switch: Google says excluded pages will not appear as links in those features and will not be eligible to ground their responses or previews. Google also says the exclusion does not change ordinary Search ranking or inclusion signals, but the site will no longer receive impressions or visits from the covered AI features.
What the Search Console opt-out actually covers
The control is named Search generative AI control. It operates at the Search Console property level and covers three categories Google lists together:

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- AI Overviews in Google Search
- AI Mode in Google Search
- Generative AI features in Discover
When a property is excluded, Google says its links and content will not appear in those features. The crawled material is also no longer eligible to be used as input for generating a response or preview there. This is a feature-level exclusion, not a request to remove the site from Google Search generally.

Google reported in 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and that AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users. Those figures are Google’s own reported audience numbers, not independent measurements of traffic or publisher impact. Google’s documentation confirms that an excluded site receives no impressions or traffic from the covered features, but it does not publish a universal percentage loss for an individual website.
How to opt out in Search Console
You need owner-level access to the verified Search Console property whose coverage you want to change. The setting follows the property hierarchy, so selecting the wrong property can leave some URLs included.
- Sign in to Google Search Console. Open the Search generative AI control page for the verified site property.
- Select the exclusion option. Choose Exclude my site’s links and content from Search generative AI features.
- Inspect inheritance. Search Console indicates whether the property is inheriting a setting from a parent property or has a manually configured override.
- Confirm the intended scope. Check each relevant domain, subdomain, URL-prefix, or path property. A child property can follow its parent or use its own control for that child and its subpages.
- Save and allow propagation. Google says a change generally takes a few days. Content should normally be excluded within one to two days after the change goes live, although caching and propagation can make some pages take longer.
For a property without a parent, inclusion is the default. A property with a parent inherits the parent’s relevant setting unless you configure an override. If your site uses several Search Console properties, make a short inventory of the exact paths you intend to exclude and verify each one after saving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat happens after exclusion
Your links and content leave the covered AI features
Google says the excluded property’s links and content will not appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, or generative AI features in Discover. Its crawled content cannot be used to ground a generated response or preview in those features. Other websites may still be cited and may express similar information, so exclusion does not remove a topic from Google’s answers.

AI-feature impressions and visits stop
Because the property is not eligible for those placements, Google says it will not receive impressions or traffic from the covered features. The documentation does not quantify how much traffic any particular publisher would lose; the outcome depends on how often that site previously appeared in AI features.
Ordinary Search ranking is not changed by this setting
Google’s Search Console Help says the control is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Search. Opting out therefore does not, by itself, demote a page in conventional web results, remove its normal index entry, or alter other Search ranking systems.
The setting is not an AI-training control
Google explicitly separates Search generative AI eligibility from AI training. The Search Console control does not affect training use. Google directs site owners who want to manage whether their content helps improve Bard and Vertex AI generative APIs to the separate Google-Extended crawler token. Google-Extended alone should not be described as an AI Overviews opt-out.

It does not remove pages from Google Search
If the goal is to keep a page out of ordinary Search results altogether, Google’s documented mechanism is the noindex directive. That is a much broader action than excluding a page from AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Allow time for the change to appear
Do not expect every cached answer or preview to disappear immediately after you save the setting. Google says changes generally take a few days and that exclusion should occur within one to two days after the change goes live, while caching and propagation can delay individual pages.
If an appearance persists, first confirm that the exact URL belongs to the property you changed and that a child property is not overriding an inherited setting. Then check whether the result was generated before the change propagated. The control applies to future eligibility; it is not a retroactive guarantee that every cached representation vanishes at the same moment.
Which Google control should you use?
These controls solve different problems. Selecting one because it sounds similar can produce an unintended loss of Search visibility or leave AI use unchanged.
| Control | Feature coverage | Scope | Effect on ordinary Search | Effect on AI use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search generative AI control | AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover | Search Console property; parent inheritance or child override | Google says it is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other Search | Removes the property’s links and content from the covered features and prevents them from grounding responses or previews there |
| Google-Extended | Google’s separate controls for use in improving Bard and Vertex AI generative APIs | Robots crawler-token policy | Not presented as an ordinary Search visibility control | Addresses training/use in those AI systems; it is not the AI Overviews opt-out |
nosnippet |
Text snippets and video previews across the Search surfaces covered by Google’s specification | Page-level robots directive | Removes the ordinary textual Search snippet for the page | Prevents the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode |
max-snippet |
Limits the amount of text shown or used | Page-level robots directive with a character limit | Leaves a snippet subject to the specified maximum | Limits the content used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode; max-snippet:0 is equivalent to nosnippet |
data-nosnippet |
Selected text on a page | Marked sections of a page | Keeps marked material out of Search snippets while leaving other page content available | Limits the marked material rather than excluding the whole property |
noindex |
Search indexing | Page-level directive | Tells Google not to show the page in Search results | Not a narrow AI-feature control; removing the page from Search also removes its normal Search presence |
Google Search Central’s site-owner guidance groups nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex as ways to limit information shown from pages in Search. That guidance was updated December 10, 2025, before the worldwide Search Console rollout, so use the newer Search Console control when your specific objective is to opt out of Search generative AI features.

When a narrower directive is a better fit
Use nosnippet when ordinary snippets are acceptable to lose
nosnippet is broader than an AI-feature exclusion. Google says it prevents a text snippet or video preview for the page on the Search surfaces covered by its specification, and it also prevents the page content from being a direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode. The trade-off is that the usual textual result snippet disappears as well.
Use max-snippet to cap exposed text
A positive max-snippet value limits the number of characters Google may use for snippets and as direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A value of zero has the same effect as nosnippet. Google documents an exception when a publisher separately grants permission, for example through structured data or a license, so a character limit is not a universal prohibition against every separately authorized use.
Use data-nosnippet for sensitive sections
Adding the data-nosnippet attribute to selected page sections lets you keep those portions out of search snippets without suppressing the entire page’s snippet. It is a section-level preview measure, not a site-wide Search Console opt-out.
Use noindex only when the page should leave Search
noindex is appropriate when a page should not appear in Google Search at all. It should not be chosen merely because you want to stop AI Overviews from quoting a page while retaining its conventional Search listing.

If you stay included, what makes a page eligible?
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require special AI-specific technical markup. A supporting link must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve the page in an AI feature.
The practical implication is to maintain the same foundational SEO hygiene used for ordinary Search: make important pages crawlable, allow indexing when appropriate, and ensure that a useful snippet can be generated. There is no separate AI markup that guarantees inclusion, and there is no guarantee that an indexed page will be selected for a particular answer.
A decision framework for site owners
Choose the Search Console exclusion when the priority is zero AI-feature exposure
Select the property-level control if you do not want your site’s links or content shown in AI Overviews, AI Mode, or generative AI features in Discover, and you accept giving up impressions and visits from those placements.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Choose Google-Extended when the concern is training use
Use the separate Google-Extended policy for the training and API-improvement question described by Google. Do not expect that policy by itself to remove links from Search generative AI features.
Choose snippet directives when ordinary Search visibility still matters
Use nosnippet or max-snippet when you want to limit preview text while keeping the page’s broader Search status in your own control. Use data-nosnippet when only particular passages need protection.
Choose noindex for a complete Search removal
Use noindex when the page should not be shown in conventional Search, understanding that this is not a targeted AI Overview setting.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing the wrong property: a domain property, subdomain, URL-prefix property, and path property can cover different URLs.
- Overlooking inheritance: a child can inherit a parent’s setting or override it, so inspect the status shown in Search Console.
- Assuming instant removal: allow the one-to-two-day normal window and additional time for caching or propagation.
- Confusing training with Search features: Google-Extended and the Search generative AI control address different uses.
- Using
noindexfor a narrow goal: it removes a page from ordinary Search rather than simply excluding an AI placement. - Expecting a guarantee from eligibility: indexing and snippet eligibility are prerequisites, not a promise that Google will crawl, select, or display a page.
Bottom line for your decision
The current, direct way to opt out of Google AI Overviews is the Search generative AI control in Search Console. It is worldwide, property-level, and also covers AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. It removes both links and grounding content from those features, leaves other Search ranking signals unchanged according to Google, and costs the site any impressions or traffic those features would have supplied. Allow several days for propagation, and use Google-Extended, snippet directives, or noindex only when their narrower or broader purposes match your actual objective.
