Yes, but opting out of model training and deleting chatbot data are separate actions. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini provide controls that can limit how future conversations are used, plus tools for deleting chats or activity. An opt-out normally affects future use; it does not automatically erase existing conversations, saved memories, human-review copies, feedback records or information already incorporated into a completed training run.

The exact control depends on whether you use a personal, business, school or employer-managed account. Check the account type first, then change the model-improvement setting and separately remove chats or activity. Treat the controls as privacy limits, not as permission to enter information that you would not want retained.

Opting out and deleting are different requests

“Stop using my conversations to train models” asks a provider to change the handling of future content. “Delete my chats” asks it to remove visible history and begin its deletion process. One does not automatically perform the other.

  • An opt-out generally applies to new conversations after the setting changes.
  • Deleting a conversation may remove it from the user interface while provider-specific copies remain for safety, security, legal or operational reasons.
  • Feedback, saved memories, uploaded files, shared links and connected services can create separate data records.
  • Work or school administrators may control retention and disable self-service options.

No provider in this guide promises that an opt-out can remove text from a model that has already been trained. Anthropic explicitly says opting out cannot undo training runs already in progress or models already trained. The same practical caution applies elsewhere: change the setting before sending sensitive material, rather than relying on a later deletion request.

Check your account type before changing anything

Personal accounts usually expose the consumer privacy controls described below. Business, school and employer-managed workspaces can have different defaults, retention schedules and administrator permissions. A setting that is visible in a personal account may be unavailable in a managed workspace.

  1. Look at the account or workspace name shown in the chatbot’s profile menu.
  2. Determine whether the account is billed personally or supplied by an organization.
  3. If it is managed, ask the administrator which retention and model-improvement policies apply.
  4. Use the provider’s current interface for that account; menu labels can change by edition, app and region.

ChatGPT: turn off model improvement, then delete chats separately

Stop new conversations being used for training

For eligible personal accounts, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI states that, when this switch is off, new conversations are not used to train its models. The control applies to the account across devices when you are signed in, so changing it on one device should govern the same account elsewhere.

Turning the switch off does not remove regular chats, archived chats or project chats. They remain available in your history unless you delete them.

Use Temporary Chat for a separate short-lived conversation

Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models. OpenAI says a Temporary Chat may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. That is a safety-retention limit, not a guarantee that the conversation is erased immediately after you close it.

Delete conversations or the account

Delete an individual conversation from the chat history controls when you want to remove that chat, or use the separate account-deletion control in Settings if you intend to close the account and request broader deletion. Deleting a chat does not automatically delete a saved memory created from it. Review the memory controls separately and remove entries you no longer want stored.

Be careful with feedback

Submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down after opting out can change the handling of the associated conversation. OpenAI says feedback may allow that conversation to be used for training even when the general model-improvement switch is off. If your goal is to keep a conversation out of training, do not submit feedback on it.

Managed workspaces

Organization policies can override or replace the personal-account controls. A company or school may retain workspace data under its own rules, and you may not be able to delete it yourself. Ask the administrator before assuming that deleting a visible chat removes the organization’s copy.

Claude: Model Improvement, Incognito chats and deletion timing

Limit model-improvement use

Anthropic’s consumer products—Free, Pro, Max and Claude Code under those plans—may use chats or coding sessions for model improvement when the user allows it, when content is selected for safety review, or when the user gives another explicit opt-in. In Claude’s Privacy Settings, turn off the Model Improvement option if you do not want to allow that general use. The wording and location can change, so confirm that the setting visibly shows the disabled state.

Use Incognito chats when appropriate

Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore a separate way to keep a particular conversation out of model-improvement use. It does not mean that no copy exists while the service is operating, and it does not replace normal deletion or account controls.

Delete a conversation

Deleting an individual Claude conversation removes it from history immediately. Anthropic says it is ordinarily removed from backend systems within 30 days. “Within” is a policy timetable, not a promise that every operational, legal or safety copy disappears at the same moment.

Understand longer retention categories

When model-improvement use is allowed, Anthropic may retain data in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. Turning the setting off does not remove material from training that is already under way or from models that have already been trained.

Anthropic also describes separate limits for exceptional records: inputs and outputs flagged for policy violations may be retained for up to two years; safety-classification scores may be retained for up to seven years; and feedback data may be retained for five years. These are provider policy limits for specific categories, not measurements of how long every user’s ordinary chat remains.

Gemini: switch off Keep Activity and clear Gemini Apps Activity

Stop future chats appearing in Activity or training

In Gemini Apps, open Gemini Apps Activity and turn off Keep Activity. Google says future chats then will not appear in Activity and will not be used to train its AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback.

With Keep Activity off, chats can remain for 72 hours so Gemini can provide the service, process feedback and protect users. That short operational window is different from the Activity history that you control.

Delete existing activity

Review or delete Gemini Apps Activity in Google’s My Activity controls. Deleting an individual chat in the Gemini app also deletes the related Activity. If Keep Activity is on, the default automatic deletion period is 18 months; Google allows a choice of three months, 36 months or no automatic deletion. Select the shortest period that fits your need instead of assuming the default suits you.

Human review and other Google services

Some chats are reviewed by human reviewers for quality and safety. Google says those reviewed conversations are disconnected from the account and may remain for up to three years, even after Activity is deleted. Turning off Keep Activity does not delete data held by other Google services, such as information stored through a separate connected product.

Workspace accounts

Administrators can control Gemini settings for Google Workspace accounts. If the Keep Activity switch is missing or locked, treat that as an administrator-policy issue rather than a failed deletion and ask the workspace owner for the applicable retention rule.

Microsoft Copilot: do not reuse an old-app procedure

The available Microsoft page describes controls for an older Copilot app and directs users of the newer experience to different documentation. Because that page does not establish the current app’s training opt-out or deletion path, this guide does not provide a menu sequence for Copilot. Check Microsoft’s current privacy documentation for the exact app, account type and region before changing a setting. Do not assume that an old-app instruction applies to the current Copilot experience.

What to check after changing a setting

A privacy switch is only one data path. Use this checklist after opting out or deleting history:

  • Confirm the status: reopen the relevant settings page and verify that the control still shows off after refreshing or signing in on another device.
  • Delete visible history: remove individual chats, archived items or activity records separately from the training switch.
  • Review memory: ChatGPT memories, where enabled, are separate records; deleting a source chat does not automatically clear them.
  • Check feedback: thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback can attach a conversation to a separate review or improvement process.
  • Remove shared links: revoke links or shared transcripts so other people cannot continue accessing a copy.
  • Review uploaded files: delete files from the provider’s file, project or workspace area, not only from the conversation that referenced them.
  • Inspect connected apps: activity controls for one chatbot may not govern data stored by another service connected to it.
  • Ask about managed retention: for a work or school account, request confirmation from the administrator rather than relying on the consumer interface.

How long does deletion really take?

There is no single industry-wide deletion period. The provider’s policy and the data category determine what happens after you press Delete.

Service Future model-improvement control Chat or activity deletion Important separate paths
ChatGPT personal accounts Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone off Delete chats individually; account deletion is separate Temporary Chats, memories, feedback and managed workspaces
Claude consumer products Privacy Settings → Model Improvement off; Incognito chats are excluded from improvement Conversation disappears from history immediately; backend removal is ordinarily within 30 days Safety flags, feedback and de-identified training-pipeline data
Gemini personal accounts Gemini Apps Activity → Keep Activity off Delete Gemini Apps Activity or an individual chat 72-hour service window, human review, feedback and other Google services
Microsoft Copilot Current control not established by the older-app page Current path not established here Verify the app-specific, current Microsoft guide

For ChatGPT Temporary Chats, OpenAI’s stated safety-retention limit is up to 30 days. For Claude, the ordinary backend deletion period is up to 30 days, while other categories have longer limits described above. For Gemini, human-reviewed material may remain up to three years after Activity deletion. These figures are policy limits attributed to each provider, not independent audits or guarantees that every record follows the maximum period.

A practical order of operations

  1. Identify the account: personal, business, school or employer-managed.
  2. Disable future model-improvement use: use the provider-specific control before starting another sensitive conversation.
  3. Delete existing chats or activity: remove the records you can see; do not assume the opt-out performs this step.
  4. Clear secondary records: memories, uploaded files, shared links, feedback and connected-app data.
  5. Stop adding feedback to sensitive chats: feedback can create a separate review or training pathway.
  6. Verify: revisit the setting, check that chats have disappeared from history and confirm any automatic-deletion choice.
  7. Allow for policy windows: backend and safety copies may persist for the period stated by that provider.
  8. Escalate managed accounts: ask the administrator or provider’s current privacy support channel what cannot be deleted from your account.

What these controls cannot promise

Opting out is not a retroactive eraser. It normally excludes new material from a future improvement process, but it cannot reliably withdraw text already reviewed by people, retained for safety, supplied as feedback or incorporated into a model that has already completed training. Deleting visible history also does not prove that every backup, audit record or connected-service copy has vanished.

The safest policy is therefore preventive: avoid entering passwords, identity documents, confidential business material, health details or other information that would cause harm if retained. Use the privacy controls to reduce future use, and use deletion tools to remove records you no longer need, while reading the provider’s retention qualifications for your specific account.
