Sometimes. You can reuse your current SSD inside a new laptop only if the new model has a replaceable slot that supports the drive’s size, connector and storage protocol. Even if it fits, the old Windows installation may not boot unchanged. Check both laptops’ documentation, back up your files and have any encryption recovery key ready before you move the drive.
Check whether the SSD fits the new laptop
Start with the exact model and configuration of the laptop you are considering. Product-family names alone are not enough: configurations can differ, and some computers have soldered or model-specific storage rather than a user-replaceable SSD. Consult the manufacturer’s specifications or service manual to confirm that storage is replaceable and to identify the supported drive type, size and interface.
Identify your current SSD
Use the SSD label, the old laptop’s manual or its system information to identify the drive. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is physically different from an M.2 module. M.2 describes a form factor, not a storage protocol: an M.2 SSD may use SATA or PCIe/NVMe. Kingston’s SSD form-factor guidance explains why the drive and host slot must match.
Compare dimensions, connector and protocol
M.2 drives come in different lengths, commonly identified by numbers such as 2230 and 2280. The laptop must have room for the module and a suitable mounting point. Connector keying and protocol support matter too: an M.2 SATA drive will not work in a SATA-only-incompatible slot that supports only PCIe/NVMe, and a PCIe/NVMe drive will not work in a SATA-only M.2 slot. Some laptop slots support both protocols, so confirm the specific model’s documentation rather than relying on the M.2 label. Kingston’s compatibility FAQ covers form factors, keying and protocol differences.

Will the old Windows installation boot?
That is a separate question from whether the SSD fits. Compatible storage hardware does not guarantee that an existing Windows installation will boot or work correctly after it is moved to different hardware. The outcome depends on the particular systems; do not assume that installing the SSD alone will produce a ready-to-use laptop.
Back up important files first. If keeping the existing installation matters, check the new laptop maker’s recovery instructions and prepare to use its recovery process or reinstall Windows if needed. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain available recovery routes and note that recovery may require the BitLocker key.

Prepare for BitLocker or device-encryption recovery
A hardware change can cause Windows to ask for a BitLocker recovery key. Before removing the SSD, locate the key and verify that you can access it from another device. Without the decryption key, the encrypted data is unreadable. Microsoft explains recovery-key prompts and BitLocker in its BitLocker overview.
If internal reuse is not an option
You may still be able to use the SSD externally, provided you choose an enclosure that matches the drive. A 2.5-inch SATA drive, M.2 SATA module and M.2 NVMe module require different enclosure types; they are not interchangeable. An enclosure lets you access the old drive over USB, but it does not make the SSD compatible with the laptop’s internal slot.

- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
Microsoft’s guide to moving files to a new Windows PC using external storage describes copying files between computers. Microsoft also says its PC-to-PC transfer feature is no longer available and excludes BitLocker-encrypted drives from that method; those file-transfer options do not establish that a moved system SSD will boot. See Microsoft’s transfer guidance.

- Get the full model number and configuration of the new laptop.
- Check its specifications or service manual for replaceable storage, supported drive form factors and lengths, and SATA or PCIe/NVMe support.
- Identify your current SSD as 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA or M.2 PCIe/NVMe, and check its M.2 length and key where applicable.
- Confirm whether the drive is encrypted and make sure you can retrieve its recovery key.
- Back up important files and review the new laptop’s recovery instructions before moving the drive.
- If the internal slot is unsuitable, choose an external enclosure that matches the SSD or use another file-transfer method.
Some systems have more specialized storage designs. For example, Apple’s instructions for the Mac Pro (2023) SSD modules describe a model-specific pairing and setup process. That example does not establish how another laptop is designed; check the documentation for the exact model you plan to use.
