Usually, no—not as a tax-free move. Sending cryptocurrency from an IRA to a wallet that you personally control is generally treated as an IRA distribution because the assets leave the retirement arrangement. A traditional-IRA distribution is generally included in income and may incur the 10% additional tax on early distributions unless an exception applies. A Roth IRA distribution is tax-free only when it satisfies the applicable five-tax-year and qualifying-event rules. The wallet’s being cold storage, hardware-based, or otherwise secure does not change that analysis.
A different transaction is a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer between eligible retirement arrangements. That can preserve the assets’ retirement-account status, but a personal wallet is not itself an eligible retirement account. This article covers U.S. federal tax treatment; state tax, custodian policies, asset eligibility, your age, basis, and exception eligibility can change the result.
What happens when IRA crypto goes to your personal wallet
An IRA is a tax-advantaged account, not simply a label attached to the coins. While cryptocurrency remains inside an eligible retirement arrangement, the account’s rules govern the tax treatment. When the custodian sends the assets to an address or account you own personally, the transaction is normally analyzed as a distribution of property from the IRA.

That remains true whether you are moving Bitcoin to a hardware wallet, transferring tokens to an exchange account in your own name, or placing the coins in cold storage. The destination may improve your control over private keys, but it does not keep the assets inside the IRA. The fair-market value used by the custodian for the distribution, and the distribution date it reports, are therefore important tax records.

After the distribution has happened, a later transfer between wallets that belong to the same taxpayer is a separate event. IRS digital-asset guidance generally treats that later transfer as non-taxable, except for digital assets used or withheld to pay transaction fees. A non-taxable wallet-to-wallet transfer does not reverse or erase the earlier IRA distribution.
Traditional IRA: income and possible early-distribution tax
For a traditional IRA, distributed cryptocurrency is generally included in gross income at its fair-market value on the distribution date. The income is ordinarily taxed as ordinary income rather than as a long-term capital gain merely because the asset is cryptocurrency.
If you are under age 59½, the distribution may also be subject to the 10% additional tax on early distributions. The rule is set out in 26 U.S.C. §72; the cited 10% rate is the U.S. Congress 2024 codification. Exceptions can apply in specific circumstances, but you must qualify for an exception rather than assume that moving the coins to a wallet creates one.

Cryptocurrency prices can change materially during a day. Ask the custodian which valuation method and timestamp it will use, and retain the statement showing the fair-market value and distribution date. That value is central to estimating the income inclusion and to reconciling the custodian’s tax reporting with your records.
What happens when you later sell
Once the coins are outside the IRA, a later sale or exchange is governed by the normal digital-asset rules for property held personally. The IRA distribution and the later disposal are separate events: the distribution can create ordinary income, while a subsequent sale can produce a capital gain or loss measured from your personal basis.

Roth IRA: when a distribution is qualified
Roth treatment depends on whether the distribution is qualified. The destination wallet does not make a distribution qualified. Under the five-tax-year and qualifying-event framework in 26 U.S.C. §408A, a qualified Roth distribution must satisfy the applicable five-tax-year period and a qualifying event. The five-tax-year qualification period is the U.S. Congress 2024 codification referenced in that provision.
If the distribution is not qualified, the tax treatment can differ between contributions and earnings, and additional-tax rules can apply to the taxable portion. Your Roth contribution history, conversion history, account start date, age, and the reason for the distribution all matter. Before authorizing an in-kind transfer, obtain an individualized calculation from a qualified tax professional rather than relying on the wallet destination.
A retirement-preserving alternative: trustee-to-trustee transfer
A trustee-to-trustee transfer moves assets directly from one eligible retirement arrangement to another eligible retirement arrangement. It is conceptually different from sending coins to your personal wallet: the assets remain under retirement-account custody and continue to be governed by the receiving arrangement’s rules.
Ask the current custodian whether it can transfer the specific digital asset directly to another eligible retirement account and whether the receiving arrangement accepts that asset. Do not assume that an address you control, an ordinary exchange account, or a personal hardware wallet qualifies as a retirement account. If the transaction is sent to a personal address, it is generally treated as a distribution even when your intention was to “roll” the crypto over.
How the main choices differ
| Choice | Tax timing | Account status | Custody | Liquidity and use | Record-keeping |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IRA to personal wallet | Generally a current IRA distribution; traditional-IRA income and possible 10% additional tax may apply | Leaves the eligible retirement arrangement | Personal control of the wallet and private keys | Personal ownership and access, subject to ordinary digital-asset rules | Keep distribution value and date, units, hash, and basis records |
| Trustee-to-trustee transfer | Designed to preserve retirement-account treatment when both arrangements are eligible and the transfer is completed directly | Remains inside an eligible retirement arrangement | Receiving retirement custodian controls custody under its policy | Uses are limited by the receiving arrangement and custodian | Retain transfer instructions, receiving-account records, and asset eligibility documentation |
| Wallet to another wallet owned by you after distribution | Generally non-taxable as a transfer; fee amounts are an exception | Already outside the IRA | Personal custody on both sides | Wallet location can change without a second disposal solely because of the move | Preserve both wallet addresses, transaction hash, units, date, and fee treatment |
Fees, supported assets, liquidity, and reporting requirements depend on the custodian, network, and asset. Confirm those terms before choosing a route; they are not interchangeable features of the tax rules.

Steps to take before authorizing an in-kind distribution
- Ask the custodian what it permits. Confirm that it allows an in-kind digital-asset distribution, identify the exact asset and quantity, and ask what fair-market value and date it will report. Request the policy in writing if possible.
- Ask about a direct retirement-account transfer first. Find out whether the requested move can instead go directly to another eligible retirement arrangement. Confirm that the receiving custodian accepts the asset and that the destination is an account, not a personal wallet.
- Estimate the tax before moving anything. For a traditional IRA, estimate ordinary income and the possible 10% additional tax, then check whether a statutory exception actually applies. For a Roth IRA, test the five-tax-year and qualifying-event requirements and separate contribution, conversion, and earnings histories.
- Confirm the operational details. Verify the destination address, blockchain network, asset type, and memo or tag requirements where relevant. A mistaken blockchain transfer can be irreversible. That operational risk does not create a tax exception.
- Document the transaction at the time it occurs. Save the custodian statement, distribution date, fair-market value, number of units, wallet addresses, transaction hash, network, and any fee amount. Keep basis records for the assets you receive personally.
- Reconcile the account and personal records. Compare the custodian’s reported distribution with your own transaction record. If the value, date, or units differ, resolve the discrepancy while the custodian and transaction data are still available.
What the IRS says about transfers between your own wallets
IRS digital-asset FAQ answer A81 states:
“No. If you transfer digital assets from a wallet, address, or account belonging to you, to another wallet, address, or account that also belongs to you, then the transfer is a non-taxable event, except to the extent of any digital assets you use, or are withheld, to pay for transaction services to effect the transfer.”

This guidance addresses ownership-to-ownership wallet transfers. It does not reclassify an IRA distribution as a wallet transfer. If a network or service withholds coins to pay a transaction fee, the fee amount is carved out of the general non-taxable treatment and must be tracked separately.
Basis and wallet records, especially for transactions from 2025 onward
Personal-wallet bookkeeping needs more than a screenshot of a balance. Preserve the unit count, acquisition or distribution date, fair-market value, transaction hash, sending and receiving addresses, network, and basis information. Keep the custodian’s statement with those records so you can connect the IRA distribution to the assets now held personally.
IRS digital-asset guidance addresses allocation and identification of basis across wallets and accounts, with a transition beginning January 1, 2025. The January 1, 2025 wallet/account basis transition is part of Internal Revenue Service guidance issued in 2024–2025. For transactions beginning on that date, organize records so each lot can be identified and allocated to the wallet or account where it is held. If your history spans multiple custodians or wallets, export complete transaction data before closing an account.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Assuming “in kind” means “tax free”
“In kind” describes delivering property rather than cash. It does not by itself prevent a traditional-IRA distribution from being included in income or a possible early-distribution tax.

Calling a personal address a rollover destination
A personal wallet is not automatically an eligible retirement arrangement. Obtain confirmation from both custodians before treating any direct movement as a retirement-account transfer.
Using the wrong network or address
Different networks and token standards can use similar-looking addresses. Check the asset, network, address, and required memo or tag in the custodian’s instructions. Send a test amount only if the custodian and network procedures support it; never assume a mistaken transfer can be reversed.
Ignoring fee coins
If coins are withheld or spent to pay transaction services, record the amount and purpose. The IRS wallet-transfer exception applies to that fee amount rather than treating it as part of the otherwise non-taxable transfer.
Losing the valuation evidence
Without the custodian’s valuation date and fair-market value, it is harder to reconcile the distribution and establish personal basis. Download statements and transaction details before the transfer is complete.

Answers to common scenarios
Can I move Bitcoin from a self-directed IRA to a hardware wallet?
You can request an in-kind distribution if the custodian permits it, but the move is generally a distribution to you. A hardware wallet changes custody, not the IRA tax characterization. Check traditional-IRA income and early-distribution consequences or Roth qualification before proceeding.

Will sending IRA crypto to cold storage trigger taxes?
Moving the assets from the IRA to your own cold-storage wallet generally triggers the tax analysis of an IRA distribution. “Cold storage” is a security description, not a retirement-account status.
Can I roll crypto from one IRA into another wallet?
Only a direct transfer between eligible retirement arrangements can preserve retirement-account status as a trustee-to-trustee transaction. A wallet you personally control is not automatically the receiving retirement arrangement.
Is a wallet-to-wallet transfer taxable?
After the assets are outside the IRA, a transfer between wallets or accounts belonging to the same taxpayer is generally non-taxable under IRS FAQ A81, except for digital assets used or withheld for transaction fees. A sale, exchange, or payment to another party is a different event.
