Yes—you can move a TV safely without its original box. The replacement package must protect the screen without pressing on it, shield the corners, prevent the set from shifting, and keep the television upright during transport. Plan on at least two people, measure the vehicle before lifting, and follow the current manual for your exact model, especially before removing the stand.
What makes a box-free TV move safe?
A television is most vulnerable at the display panel, corners, stand mounts and internal components that can be stressed by twisting or vibration. The original carton is useful because it was shaped for that model, but it is not the only workable container. A correctly sized cardboard carton or a rigid cardboard cover can provide equivalent basic protection when combined with cushioning and immobilization.
Safety depends on the complete setup rather than one material. A thick blanket can prevent scratches during a short carry, but it is not a substitute for a fitted outer layer, corner protection and gap-filling material. The set should not touch the carton walls, and nothing loose should rest against the screen.
Materials to gather before packing
Samsung’s service-packing instructions for Argentina list the following types of material. That page was updated January 27, 2021 and concerns transport to Samsung service centers, so use its method as practical guidance and check your model’s current instructions for any differences.

| Material | Purpose | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Protective film or another clean, smooth wrap | Separates the screen from packing materials | Cover the display lightly; do not stretch or press the film against the panel. |
| Protective foam | Absorbs impact and vibration | Use a continuous layer around the set. Samsung’s service procedure specifies at least 20 mm, but that figure is not a universal household-moving requirement. |
| Corrugated cardboard | Creates a rigid outer shell | Cut panels to the TV’s dimensions or use a carton with suitable internal clearance. |
| Cardboard separators | Protect corners and keep layers apart | Place rigid pieces at corners and along vulnerable edges. |
| Filler material | Stops movement inside the carton | Fill every gap so the TV cannot slide, rotate or strike the box walls. |
| Packing tape | Secures the carton and protective layers | Seal the outer carton firmly; do not tape directly to the screen or delicate finish. |
Use clean, dry materials. Moisture, grit and staples can damage the finish or panel. Measure the television’s height, width and depth with the stand removed if it will travel separately. The carton’s internal dimensions must accommodate the wrapped set while leaving room for protective material, not merely match the unwrapped measurements.
How to pack a TV without its original box
-
Clear a safe work area
Choose a clean, level surface larger than the television and cover it with a soft, non-abrasive layer. Have a second person present before you lift the set. Best Buy also advises two-person carrying; a large panel is awkward even when it is not especially heavy.
-
Disconnect and document everything
Unplug the power cord and remove HDMI, antenna, USB and other cables. Photograph the connections if reconnection will be complicated. Put the remote, cables, screws and any detachable accessories in a labeled bag that will not press against the screen.

Remove the stand only if the manual allows it
Many televisions are easier to protect with the feet or pedestal removed. Follow the model-specific manual rather than forcing a screw or latch. Keep every screw with the stand, and wrap the stand separately. If the manufacturer does not describe removal, leave it attached and design the carton around it.
-
Place the display on the protected surface
With one person supporting each side, lower the television gently. Do not lift by the screen, bezel, stand or a thin edge. Keep fingers behind the frame and avoid twisting the panel.

-
Cover the screen without applying pressure
Lay protective film or a similar smooth material over the display. It should remain flat and clean but should not be tightened like shrink wrap. Never place tools, remotes, cables or loose packing directly on the panel. Samsung specifically warns against pressure on the screen.
-
Build corner and edge protection
Fit foam or rigid cardboard around all four corners and along the edges. Corners need extra attention because a drop or side impact can crack the panel even when the center appears cushioned. Make sure separators cannot shift into the display area.

Add a firm outer layer
Wrap the protected television in foam, then surround it with corrugated cardboard panels. If you are making a cover instead of using a carton, join the panels so they cannot fold inward during carrying. A loose blanket may be added outside this structure for scratch protection, but it should not be the only protection.
-
Choose or construct a fitted carton
Use a box whose internal dimensions suit the wrapped television, or make a cardboard sleeve that matches its height and width. Leave enough room for cushioning on every side. An oversized box is unsafe unless you can fill the extra space completely; a tight box can compress the screen or corners.
-
Cushion the bottom before loading
Place protective foam or other firm cushioning across the bottom of the carton. Set the wrapped television in the center, keeping the panel orientation specified by the manufacturer. Do not let the frame sit directly on cardboard or the vehicle floor.

Fill every void
Insert filler around the sides, top and ends until the set cannot move when the carton is gently rocked. The television should not contact any carton edge. Use broad, stable pieces rather than small loose objects that can migrate toward the screen.

Close and secure the carton
Seal all seams with packing tape and reinforce handles or weak corners with additional cardboard. Mark the package “TV,” “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP.” These labels cannot replace careful handling, but they communicate the intended orientation to anyone helping.
How should the TV be carried and placed in the vehicle?
Carry with two people
Keep the television upright and close to your body. One person should lead the route and open doors while the other supports the opposite side. Move slowly through doorways and stair turns; do not pivot by twisting the panel. If the wrapped set feels unstable or too heavy for two people, stop and get additional help rather than dragging it.
Transport it upright
Best Buy advises against laying a TV flat during transport. A Sony support-community moderator response dated January 21, 2020 likewise recommends upright transport and warns that vibration while a television is flat can damage the screen. An older LG Digital Customer Care response hosted by Best Buy gives similar advice. These secondary recommendations do not replace a current model manual, but they support the safer default: keep the panel vertical unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies another orientation.
Secure it before driving
Place the carton so its broad face is supported and its “this side up” orientation is maintained. Strap or brace it against a solid vehicle surface using suitable tie-downs; do not cinch a strap across the display. Prevent forward, backward and sideways sliding, and keep luggage from falling against the carton. Drive gently over speed bumps and rough roads.

Measure instead of trusting a vehicle chart
Measure the vehicle’s usable doorway, cargo opening, interior height and length. Best Buy provides approximate vehicle-size suggestions but explicitly says they are not guarantees and recommends measuring. Include the carton’s added thickness, not just the television’s published diagonal size.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Door or hatch opening exceeds the carton’s widest dimension | A large interior may still have a narrow opening. |
| Interior length | Enough space for the upright carton and padding | Prevents bending or forcing the package into place. |
| Roof height | Carton can remain vertical without contacting the ceiling | A tilted panel is harder to stabilize. |
| Securement points | Strong anchor points or a stable partition | Stops the carton from sliding during braking or turns. |
When is professional packing or delivery the better choice?
Consider a professional packing, delivery or installation service when the set is too large for the available helpers, the vehicle cannot carry it upright and secured, the route includes stairs or tight turns, or you cannot build a rigid carton that immobilizes the television. Best Buy recommends delivery and installation for televisions 65 inches or larger. That is retailer guidance, not a universal cutoff: a lighter 65-inch set may be manageable in one situation, while a smaller but unusually heavy or fragile model may warrant help.
Compare the options using the actual conditions rather than screen size alone:
- DIY packing: suitable when you have two capable handlers, correct materials, a fitted carton and a vehicle that supports upright securement.
- Purchased TV carton: useful when its internal dimensions match your wrapped set and it includes rigid corner protection; measure before buying.
- Professional service: preferable when lifting, stairs, distance, weather or vehicle constraints make a controlled move unlikely.
The available guidance does not establish a universal price, damage rate or size at which hiring movers becomes mandatory. Ask any service how it will protect the panel, keep it upright and handle responsibility for damage before scheduling.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using only a blanket: Add a rigid cardboard outer layer and corner protection; a blanket alone does not immobilize the set.
- Leaving empty space in the carton: Reopen it and add stable filler until the television cannot shift.
- Pressing wrap against the screen: Remove tension and use a loose protective layer with cushioning around the frame.
- Putting accessories in the same space: Bag them separately so they cannot strike the display.
- Carrying by the bezel or stand: Support the frame from both sides and follow the manual’s lifting points.
- Transporting flat for convenience: Reconfigure the vehicle or use a different vehicle; upright transport is the safer default.
- Assuming a 20 mm foam rule applies everywhere: Treat Samsung’s 20 mm specification as part of its service-packing procedure, not a universal household standard.
- Skipping the model manual: Check current instructions for stand removal, orientation, lifting points and any transport warnings.
Final pre-drive checklist
- The screen is covered without pressure and no loose item touches it.
- All corners and edges have rigid or foam protection.
- The carton is correctly sized and gaps are filled.
- The stand, screws and accessories are packed separately.
- Two people can carry the package without twisting or dropping it.
- The vehicle opening and interior dimensions have been measured.
- The carton can remain upright and be secured without a strap crossing the display.
- The route, doors, stairs and weather have been considered.
After arrival, carry the carton inside before opening it. Let a television that has been exposed to cold or humidity reach room temperature before powering it on, and inspect the panel, frame and ports before removing the protective layers.
