Yes. Cat 5e and Cat 6 cables can coexist on the same Ethernet network, and a Cat 5e cable does not slow down other, separate links. On the particular connection that uses both categories, the link is limited by the capability of its complete path: cables, patch cords, connectors, terminations, and the ports at both ends.

What happens when Cat 5e and Cat 6 are on the same network?

Ethernet performance is assessed link by link, not by assigning one speed to an entire network. A device-to-device connection that includes Cat 5e may be limited by that section, while an unrelated connection using Cat 6 can operate according to its own components and endpoints. NETGEAR, Eaton, and BICSI describe Cat 5e and Cat 6 as compatible in a mixed installation; BICSI explains that a mixed transmission path operates at the lower performance level of its components. That compatibility does not guarantee a link will work as expected if it is damaged, poorly terminated, or otherwise out of specification.

For example, if a router connects to a switch through a Cat 5e run and a computer connects to that switch over a separate Cat 6 run, the Cat 5e section affects traffic that traverses that router-to-switch link. It does not automatically make the computer’s separate switch connection a Cat 5e link.

How fast can the mixed link run?

The negotiated speed depends on the ports at both ends and the capability and condition of the full channel. Replacing one section with a higher-category cable cannot make an endpoint support a faster Ethernet rate, and a category label by itself does not prove that an installed channel meets its expected performance.

Use case Published cable guidance Distance qualification
10/100/1000BASE-T Cat 5e or Cat 6 Schneider Electric gives a 100 m (328 ft) maximum total channel, comprising up to 90 m (295 ft) of permanent horizontal cable and 10 m (33 ft) total patch cable.
10 Gbps over Cat 6 Cat 6 NETGEAR lists up to 55 m (180 ft). BICSI notes that reach depends on screening and alien-crosstalk requirements; unscreened Cat 6 is limited to 55 m, while screened Cat 6 may support up to 100 m subject to those requirements.
10 Gbps over Cat 6A Cat 6A NETGEAR lists up to 100 m (328 ft).

The 100 m channel figure for 10/100/1000BASE-T is not permission to exceed the applicable limits for a particular installation, and the 10 Gbps figures should not be conflated: Cat 6 is not established here as supporting 10 Gbps at 100 m in every installation.

Should you keep Cat 5e or use Cat 6?

Keep Cat 5e for a working gigabit link

If the connected devices support 1 Gbps or less and the existing Cat 5e channel meets your speed and distance needs, there is no cited basis for replacing it solely because Cat 6 is available. NETGEAR recommends Cat 5e for devices supporting 1 Gbps or less.

Consider Cat 6 for multi-gig equipment

For equipment that supports 2.5, 5, or 10 Gbps, NETGEAR recommends Cat 6 or better. Check the intended speed and run length: Cat 6’s cited 10 Gbps reach is up to 55 m (180 ft), with longer reach dependent on screening and alien-crosstalk requirements.

Consider Cat 6A when 10 Gbps must reach 100 m

For a planned 10 Gbps link over a channel as long as 100 m (328 ft), Cat 6A is the more suitable choice among the options covered here; NETGEAR lists that capability for Cat 6A. Confirm that the whole channel and both endpoints also support the intended rate.

What to check before changing a cable

  • Identify the actual link. Trace the connection between the devices whose speed matters; a slower cable elsewhere in the network does not automatically constrain this link.
  • Check both endpoint ports. A cable upgrade cannot raise the maximum rate supported by the router, switch, computer, or other connected equipment.
  • Count the full channel. Include installed cable, patch cords, connectors, and terminations when assessing distance and performance.
  • Inspect installation condition. A damaged cable or poor termination can prevent expected performance even when the jacket says Cat 5e or Cat 6.
  • Match category to speed and distance. Use the required link rate and total channel length—not the category number alone—to decide whether a replacement is warranted.

A cable swap alone does not guarantee faster internet or higher throughput: the endpoints, service, and complete connection all matter.
