No—Frenzied Flame is not permanently missable in Valor Mortis. The bronze trophy is awarded for igniting the castle bonfire. You can activate it during the Fortress chapter or return after the final boss in free roam. The required interaction is in the Fortress underground: use Fire Transmutation on the sword planted in the ground.
The practical timing is therefore flexible. You must first reach Fortress, but there is no ending choice, one-time item, or single-use decision that can lock you out. If you finish the story without lighting the bonfire, revisit Fortress through the Chapel fast-travel point and complete the same route.
Is Frenzied Flame missable in Valor Mortis?
Frenzied Flame is classified as non-missable. PowerPyx’s trophy roadmap lists zero missable trophies for the game, and PixelForge labels Frenzied Flame “Missable No.” Both guides also describe post-story cleanup, so a playthrough that reaches the ending without this trophy can still obtain it afterward.
The important distinction is between temporarily unavailable and missable. You cannot reach the bonfire before Fortress becomes accessible, but that is normal progression gating rather than a deadline. Once Fortress is open, you may light the bonfire immediately or leave it for later. The game returns you to free roam after the final boss, with earlier regions available for unfinished collectibles and side content.

What does the Frenzied Flame trophy require?
Steam describes the achievement in one sentence: Ignite the bonfire in the castle.
In gameplay terms, the “castle” objective is the bonfire in Fortress. You do not earn the trophy merely by entering Fortress, finding the sword, or acquiring Fire Transmutation. The unlock occurs when the transmutation is successfully cast on the sword and the bonfire ignites.
There is no separate boss kill, dialogue choice, collectible set, or ending condition attached to this trophy. Your checklist is short:
- Reach the Fortress region.
- Reach the underground section from Fortress > Chapel.
- Find the sword stuck in the ground beyond the sewer-room route.
- Use Fire Transmutation on that sword.
- Wait for the bonfire ignition and the achievement notification.
When can you first get Frenzied Flame?
Fortress is the earliest relevant region
The route is in Fortress, identified by PixelForge as Chapter 9, “In Ruins.” You cannot use the route while Fortress is still locked on the world map. Progress through the preceding University sequence first.
University progression and poison protection
Critical Hits places Fortress access after you obtain the University key and acquire poison protection at the University. These are progression requirements for reaching the region, not additional requirements for the trophy itself. If Fortress is unavailable, continue the University objective chain until those milestones are complete.

Once Fortress is unlocked, the trophy can be earned at any convenient point. Nothing in the available trophy roadmaps identifies a chapter cutoff, an ending branch, or a consumable that must be preserved for Frenzied Flame.
Exact route to the castle bonfire
Use the following path from the Fortress fast-travel network. The landmarks matter because the underground contains multiple doors, stairs, and sewer passages.
- Fast travel to Fortress > Chapel. Select the Chapel destination rather than beginning from another Fortress entrance. This puts you near the underground route used by the trophy guides.
- Enter the underground area. Follow the passage from the Chapel until you reach the traversal section that includes a pole jump.
- Complete the pole jump and enter the sewer room. The relevant room is the sewer chamber on the far side of that jump.
- Take the door on the left. Do not continue through the opposite exit; the left-hand door is the route toward the stairs.
- Turn left at the first stair landing. After entering the stair area, use the first landing as your directional checkpoint and turn left.
- Descend the second staircase. The first stairs bring you to the landing; the second descent leads to the room containing the objective.
- Enter the room on the left. Inside is a sword planted in the ground.
- Cast Fire Transmutation on the planted sword. Target the sword and activate the ability. When the bonfire ignites, Frenzied Flame should unlock.
If you reach a dead end after the pole jump, retrace your steps to the sewer room and confirm that you used the left door. If you are in the stairwell but cannot find the objective room, check that you turned left at the first landing and descended the second set of stairs, not the initial flight.

Fire Transmutation is the interaction that converts the planted sword into the lit castle bonfire. Reaching the room without this ability does not complete the trophy. The route guides identify Fire Transmutation as the required ability, so make sure it is available on your character before attempting the interaction.

At the sword, use the normal ability prompt rather than a weapon attack or environmental strike. The intended sequence is to stand near the sword, select Fire Transmutation, and let the animation finish. The trophy trigger is tied to the bonfire igniting; it is not tied merely to opening the room or touching the sword.
Can you clean it up after the final boss?
Yes. PowerPyx states that Valor Mortis retains free roam after the story and that previously visited regions remain reachable for missing collectibles and side content. That post-game state is also why the trophy is considered non-missable. After the final boss, load the free-roam state, fast travel to Fortress > Chapel, and follow the same underground route.
Post-game cleanup does not require a new save or a different ending. The trophy objective remains the same: use Fire Transmutation on the sword and ignite the bonfire. If you are already beyond the story, there is no reason to restart solely for Frenzied Flame.

All three timings produce the same result. The safest choice for completionists is to light the bonfire the first time you are exploring Fortress with Fire Transmutation available. The safest choice for players focused on the story is to leave it for cleanup, knowing that the post-game state preserves access.

Troubleshooting when the trophy does not unlock
Fortress is not available
Continue the University progression. Verify that you have obtained the University key and acquired poison protection there, the milestones associated with Fortress access in the progression guide from Critical Hits. Until Fortress is unlocked, the Chapel destination and its underground route will not be available.
You cannot find the sword
Start from Fortress > Chapel and check the route in order: underground passage, pole jump, sewer room, left door, left turn at the first stair landing, second staircase, then the room on the left. The most common navigation error is taking the wrong exit from the sewer room or stopping at the first stair flight.
The interaction prompt is missing
Confirm that Fire Transmutation is equipped or otherwise usable by your character. The sword is the target, not the nearby floor or a conventional attack target. If the ability is unavailable, leave the area, complete the progression that grants or enables it, and return to the same room.
The bonfire ignites but no notification appears
Allow the ignition animation to complete and check the game’s achievement notification afterward. If the platform overlay is delayed, consult the achievement list rather than assuming the trigger failed. The intended trigger is the bonfire ignition itself; returning to the sword and attempting a normal attack will not create a second objective.

You finished the story and think the area is locked
Use the post-game free-roam state rather than loading an earlier chapter save. PowerPyx’s roadmap specifically says prior areas remain accessible after the story. From free roam, select Fortress > Chapel and repeat the route.
How Frenzied Flame fits into completion planning
For trophy planning, Frenzied Flame is unusually forgiving. Its five relevant characteristics are:
- Missability: no known missable window.
- Earliest region: Fortress, identified as Chapter 9, “In Ruins.”
- Required ability: Fire Transmutation.
- Route complexity: a short landmark route through the Chapel underground, pole jump, sewer room, stairs, and left-hand objective room.
- Post-game access: available during free-roam cleanup after the final boss.
That combination means you do not need a special trophy save, a backup before an ending decision, or a resource-conservation plan for this achievement. The only meaningful preparation is reaching Fortress and having Fire Transmutation ready when you arrive at the sword.

Achievement context and unlock rate
Valor Mortis has 39 Steam achievements, according to Valve’s listing accessed October 18, 2026. At that access time, Frenzied Flame showed a 2.5% global unlock rate. Steam percentages are live platform metrics that change as more players reach and complete the objective, so that figure should be read as a snapshot for that date, not a permanent difficulty or missability rating.
A low unlock percentage does not contradict the trophy’s non-missable status. Players may simply be early in the game, may not yet have reached Fortress, or may postpone optional cleanup until after the story. The independent roadmap classifications and the game’s free-roam structure are the relevant evidence for whether the achievement can be locked out.
