Sometimes. A time loop does not automatically make every quest recoverable. A missed quest may return on the next cycle, reset at a scheduled boundary, remain available from its giver, expire when a timer or instance ends, or disappear permanently after an irreversible story transition.
The reliable answer comes from the game’s quest rules, not from the presence of a loop. Check the quest’s wording, category, timer, area restrictions, save system and story flags before deciding that a side quest is gone forever.
Why a time loop does not guarantee that every quest returns
“The day resets” can describe only one layer of a game. A loop may rewind NPC schedules and environmental events while leaving completed quest flags, inventory, relationships or story milestones intact. Another game may reset the entire quest log. A third may treat each loop as a new run but permanently mark a quest as failed when its deadline passes.

Quest content is usually governed by several systems at once:

- World state: NPC positions, open doors, enemy spawns and available activities.
- Quest state: accepted, active, failed, completed, abandoned or unavailable.
- Progress flags: dialogue choices, relationship levels, discovered clues and objective checkpoints.
- Inventory and upgrades: items that may persist, be consumed, or be removed at the reset.
- Story gates: milestones that can lock earlier content even when the clock starts over.
Because these layers can reset independently, a missing marker is not proof of permanent loss. Bethesda Support specifically notes that phasing and instance state can hide quest elements. Its recommended remedies include checking other active quests, refreshing the area and returning to the original quest giver.
Quest categories have different persistence rules
Look at what kind of quest you missed before treating it as a one-time opportunity. The following patterns are common, but the game’s own documentation takes priority.

Support guidance for Fallout 76 illustrates why category matters: daily quests can persist, while repeatable, drop and event quests may not persist if the player logs out before finishing. That is a game-specific rule, not a universal law for time-loop RPGs, but it is a useful model for the distinctions to look for.

Read the quest log literally
Search for explicit language such as “expires,” “failed,” “abandon,” “resume,” “repeatable,” “available until,” “before entering,” or “return after reset.” A red timer, an objective that names a location, or a warning that leaving will cancel the quest is stronger evidence than a vague label such as “urgent.” The word “limited time” alone does not establish permanent missability.

Check the quest giver and nearby phase
Return to the original NPC after the loop, reload the area, and inspect dialogue options. A quest can be hidden because another active quest controls the same NPC, because you are in a different phase, or because the trigger has not refreshed. Bethesda Support’s suggested “Force a Zone ‘Soft Reset’ If a quest has failed to trigger” wording describes this type of recovery: leave the zone, allow it to reload, then return and check again.
Identify the boundary that ended access
Determine whether you crossed an area boundary, left an instance, ran out of time, logged out, died, abandoned the quest or activated a story milestone. Each boundary can have a different consequence. A loop reset may repair a schedule-based failure but cannot necessarily reopen an instance that the game has removed from your log.
Timers and instances can end a quest before the loop does
A quest can be temporary inside a longer loop. Lost Ark’s official guide states that sudden quests cannot be completed after the player leaves the designated area or runs out of time. It also says instance quests are removed from the quest log when the player exits. In a time-loop RPG, the equivalent may be a short objective window inside the repeating day: the world will reset later, but the current instance has already closed.
When a timer is visible, treat it as a hard gameplay rule unless the interface says it pauses. Record what happens when the timer reaches zero: some games fail the quest, some return it on the next cycle, and some simply remove the current objective while leaving the quest giver available. If the game uses a server or daily reset, distinguish that boundary from the story loop. Lost Ark’s guide, for example, says quests reset at server reset time; that is not the same event as a personal in-world rewind.

Points of no return can be real, but not always permanent
A named story transition deserves special caution. Entering a final area, starting a chapter, triggering an evacuation or committing to a major ritual may close earlier side content. Before crossing it, make a manual save if the game allows one and finish optional objectives that are explicitly marked as time-sensitive.
However, a point-of-no-return message does not always mean that a quest is lost across the entire game. Red Candle Games Support says players can still go back and trigger side quests before entering the Vital Sanctum. It also explains that, after the reset, the original save retains equipment, jade and side-quest progress. This demonstrates an important distinction: a transition may be reversible within the current run, or the game may preserve the relevant progress after a reset, even though the transition closes access temporarily.
A reliable five-step check before assuming permanent loss
- Identify the exact game and quest. Note the platform, edition, game version and full quest name. Rules can differ between releases, regions and online services.
- Read every objective and warning. Look for a deadline, failure condition, abandon command, repeat indicator, checkpoint or point-of-no-return notice.
- Classify the trigger. Decide whether the quest is tied to a timed event, a daily reset, an area, an instance, a character schedule or a story flag.
- Try reversible actions first. Revisit the giver, change zones, refresh the area, reload a save from before the trigger, complete the current loop and check again. Avoid abandoning the quest until you know what that command does.
- Verify with the publisher. Search the game’s official support page, manual or patch notes for the quest name and the exact failure condition. A publisher’s answer is more reliable than a generic claim that all loop content returns.
What to do when the quest marker disappears
Follow this order so that troubleshooting does not create a second failure:

- Open every quest tab, including completed, failed, hidden, event and side-quest categories.
- Check whether another active quest has moved the same NPC or changed the area phase.
- Travel to a different zone, wait for the area to unload, then return.
- Speak to the original giver and inspect all dialogue branches rather than only the highlighted option.
- Complete or abandon unrelated objectives only after confirming that doing so will not remove the missing quest.
- Reload the most recent save from before the marker vanished if the game supports manual saves.
- Finish the current loop, allow the scheduled reset to occur, and check the giver again.
If none of these steps works, record the quest name, the objective text, the last action you took and the platform. Those details are what an official support team needs to determine whether the content is phased, bugged or permanently closed.

Use these axes when comparing two time-loop RPGs
Do not compare games only by asking whether “the loop resets.” Compare the specific systems that determine quest recovery.

A game that resets NPC schedules but preserves completed flags will let you repeat opportunities while preventing duplicate rewards. A game that resets the quest log may offer more freedom but can also erase checkpoint information. Knowing which model you are playing is more useful than relying on the genre label.

You missed an NPC’s scheduled window
Wait for the next loop or scheduled phase, then return to the NPC. If the dialogue still does not appear, refresh the zone and check whether another quest is occupying the NPC.

Assume the current attempt has ended. Look for a repeat trigger or a new entry from the quest giver; do not assume that re-entering the same doorway will restore the instance.

You logged out during an event or drop quest
Check whether the event is still active and whether the trigger item can be obtained again. Some systems preserve daily progress but discard event, drop or repeatable quests on logout.
You crossed a story transition
Stop making irreversible progress, check for a pre-transition save and read the game’s warning. If the transition is reversible, return before the named gate; if not, determine whether the next loop or a new run preserves the side-quest flag.
The quest is absent but no failure message appeared
Treat this as a possible phase or trigger problem, not proof of permanent loss. Use the soft-reset steps, inspect all quest tabs and consult official support before restarting the game.

- Keep one manual save before each named story gate.
- Finish optional objectives before starting an event with a visible countdown.
- Write down the loop time, location and NPC conditions for quests that depend on schedules.
- Do not abandon a quest merely to clear the log; abandonment may be irreversible.
- When testing a suspected failure, use a separate save so the test cannot destroy your only recovery point.
- Capture the exact warning or objective text. Small wording differences often identify whether a quest is repeatable, checkpointed or one-time.
The practical verdict
You can permanently miss a quest in a time-loop RPG, but you cannot infer that outcome from a vanished marker or from the fact that the day resets. Determine what the game resets, what it preserves, which boundary ended the quest and whether an official source describes a recovery path. Revisit the giver, refresh the area, check timers and instances, protect a pre-transition save, and verify the exact quest with the publisher before starting over.
