Yes. A Cricut can make water-resistant, waterproof-oriented stickers when you print on printable vinyl, let the ink dry, cover the print with a laminate sheet, and then use Print Then Cut. Cricut’s dedicated Printable Waterproof Sticker Set bundles those two layers. The finished stickers are intended to tolerate water, but Cricut recommends handwashing decorated items; do not treat them as dishwasher-safe.
The critical detail is the laminate. Printable inkjet vinyl by itself is not the complete waterproof-set workflow. Print only the vinyl sheet, allow the ink to dry, apply the laminate without trapping wrinkles, and cut the combined sheet on a compatible Cricut machine.
How the waterproof Cricut sticker method works
A printed sticker has two vulnerable parts: the adhesive-backed material and the ink sitting on its surface. Cricut’s method protects the printed surface with a clear top laminate. The process is therefore a three-layer workflow: inkjet-printed vinyl, a laminate film over that print, and the sticker’s adhesive backing underneath.

This is different from ordinary Printable Sticker Paper. Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper instructions give that material its own inkjet-only and cutting guidance; they do not identify it as the Waterproof Sticker Set. If exposure to splashes or outdoor light matters, choose the dedicated waterproof set or a printable-vinyl-and-laminate combination whose instructions support that use.
Materials and equipment checklist
Gather these items before opening Design Space:
- A Print Then Cut-compatible Cricut machine.
- Cricut Design Space.
- A Fine-Point Blade and Housing.
- A LightGrip cutting mat.
- The Printable Waterproof Sticker Set, or printable vinyl plus a compatible waterproof laminate.
- An inkjet printer. Cricut warns against laser printing for these materials because a laser printer uses heat to fuse toner.
- A brayer or soft scraper for pressing the laminate down smoothly.
- A clean, dry surface for applying the finished stickers.
The set’s printable-vinyl sheet has a green grid and Cricut logo on its reverse. The laminate liner has a QR-code sticker and a slit near one edge. Those markings help you identify which sheet goes into the printer and which liner to peel during lamination.
Check Cricut compatibility before you start
The Waterproof Sticker Set needs the stronger sensor used for its Print Then Cut registration marks. Cricut’s current instructions list these machine families:
| Machine family | Compatibility stated by Cricut |
|---|---|
| Maker machines | Supported for the Waterproof Sticker Set’s sensor requirement. |
| Explore 3 and later | Supported. |
| Venture | Supported. |
| Joy Xtra | Supported. |
| Joy 2 | Supported. |
| Original Joy | Cannot use Print Then Cut according to Cricut’s general note. |
Model support and Design Space capabilities can change. Confirm the exact machine and current material guidance in Cricut’s Printable Waterproof Sticker Set Instructions before cutting. Selecting a similar-looking material setting simply because it appears in the menu can produce an incorrect cut or registration failure.
Step-by-step: make the stickers
1. Prepare the artwork in Design Space
Create or import the artwork, place it inside the Print Then Cut area, and add an outside shape if you want a consistent border. Keep important details away from the edge so the cut line does not remove them. When the design is ready, choose Make and follow Design Space’s Print Then Cut layout.

2. Load the correct sheet into an inkjet printer
Print on the printable-vinyl sheet, not on the laminate. The sheet’s green-grid-and-logo side identifies the backing; follow the feed direction required by your printer so the printable face receives the ink. Feed one sheet at a time or use the printer’s bypass tray when available. Cricut specifies an inkjet printer for its printable materials and warns that laser heat can damage the material or the printer.
3. Choose a print setting that gives the ink time to deposit cleanly
For brighter, crisper results, Cricut recommends a high-quality, best-quality, or photo-paper setting. Those are manufacturer suggestions rather than settings guaranteed for every printer. If the printed surface smudges, Cricut suggests reducing print quality. Let the sheet dry completely before touching the image or applying laminate; the required drying time varies with the printer, ink, humidity, and selected quality mode.
4. Identify and prepare the laminate
Place the printed sheet on a flat surface. Find the slit in the laminate liner near the edge with the QR-code sticker. Peel back only a small section of the liner to expose an edge of adhesive laminate. Do not remove the entire liner at once: a small exposed section is easier to align and keeps the rest from sticking prematurely.
5. Apply the laminate gradually
Align the exposed laminate with the printed sheet, then adhere that first section. Hold the remaining liner back and advance across the sheet a little at a time while smoothing the laminate over the print with a brayer or soft scraper. Work from the adhered area toward the unsealed edge so air is pushed out rather than trapped. Cricut’s instructions specifically call for gradual application and smoothing.
6. Do not use transfer tape
The Waterproof Sticker Set is already a printable, adhesive-backed construction. Cricut says not to use transfer tape with this set. Transfer tape can add an unnecessary layer and interfere with the intended cut-and-apply workflow.

7. Put the laminated sheet on the mat
Place the layered sheet on a LightGrip mat in the orientation shown by Design Space. Press it down evenly so the material lies flat. The printed registration marks must remain readable; laminate that covers, wrinkles across, or distorts those marks can prevent the sensor from locating the cut boundary.

8. Select the matching material setting
Choose the setting that matches the finish you printed: White, Transparent, White Holographic, or Transparent Holographic, as applicable to your sheet. Confirm that the Fine-Point Blade and Housing are installed. Design Space then reads the registration marks and cuts the sticker shapes through the laminated vinyl.
9. Weed and apply
Remove the surrounding excess material, separate each sticker, and apply it to a clean, dry surface. Press the sticker down firmly, especially along its edges. Dirt, moisture, grease, or texture on the application surface can reduce adhesion even when the printed face is protected.
Dedicated set or separate materials?
The choice is mainly about convenience and control, not a different cutting principle.
| Option | What you receive | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Printable Waterproof Sticker Set | Printable vinyl and a matching laminate sheet in one product. | The simplest way to follow Cricut’s documented waterproof-sticker sequence. |
| Printable vinyl plus separate laminate | Two products selected independently. | Useful when you already own printable vinyl or need a different laminate finish; verify that both products’ instructions support inkjet printing and your intended use. |
| Ordinary Printable Sticker Paper | Printable sticker paper with its own inkjet and cutting instructions. | Suitable when you do not need the waterproof-set workflow; Cricut’s cited instructions do not describe it as the Waterproof Sticker Set. |
Whatever combination you choose, follow the exact material instructions rather than assuming that every printable sheet has the same coating, printer compatibility, or cut setting.

What “waterproof” and “UV resistant” mean here
Cricut’s US product page describes the Printable Waterproof Sticker Set as “Waterproof and UV resistant up to 2 years.” That is a manufacturer-stated specification for this product, not an independent test and not a universal lifespan for every printer, ink, surface, climate, or laminate combination. Do not extend the statement to third-party vinyl, laminates, or inks.
Cricut’s instructions say all versions of the Waterproof Sticker Set block UV light, while ink formulations can vary and colors may fade. If fading occurs, Cricut recommends trying UV-resistant ink. The two-year wording should therefore be read as an upper claim under the manufacturer’s stated conditions, not as a guarantee that every sticker will look unchanged outdoors for two years.
Care limits: handwashing is the safe recommendation
Cricut recommends handwashing items decorated with these stickers. Dishwasher heat and detergents can reduce sticker life, so avoid presenting the set as dishwasher-safe. “Waterproof” in this context should not be rewritten as a promise of permanent outdoor service, unlimited soaking, or unchanged color in every environment. The laminate protects the printed face, but edges, adhesive, abrasion, chemicals, and heat still affect longevity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
The print smears before lamination
Let the sheet dry longer and handle it only by the backing. If smearing continues, lower the printer’s quality setting as Cricut suggests, then make a fresh test print before using the rest of the sheet. Check that the printer is inkjet and that the printable face is loaded in the correct direction.
Recommended Free Tools
The laminate has bubbles or wrinkles
Peel the liner back only a small amount, realign the exposed edge, and continue slowly. Use a brayer or soft scraper to smooth from the adhered section toward the free edge. Applying the entire laminate sheet in one motion makes alignment and air removal harder.

Design Space cannot read the registration marks
Check that the sheet is on the LightGrip mat in the orientation shown on screen and that the laminate is smooth over the printed marks. Confirm that your exact Cricut model supports this set’s sensor requirement and that the selected material setting matches the finish. The original Joy cannot perform Print Then Cut.
The cut goes through the wrong depth or shape
Recheck the chosen setting—White, Transparent, White Holographic, or Transparent Holographic—and install the Fine-Point Blade and Housing. Material thickness and surface finish influence the cut, so do not substitute an unrelated setting without checking the current Cricut instructions.
The sticker peels from the object
Clean and dry the surface, remove dust or grease, and press the sticker’s edges firmly after application. A rough or dirty surface can defeat the adhesive even when the laminate and print are intact.
Practical boundaries to keep in mind
- Use an inkjet printer for Cricut’s printable materials; laser heat can damage the sheet or printer.
- Print only on the vinyl layer and laminate after the ink has dried.
- Keep the laminate smooth and registration marks visible.
- Use a compatible machine and the finish-specific material setting.
- Handwash decorated items rather than putting them in a dishwasher.
- Treat the “up to 2 years” UV statement as Cricut’s product claim, not an independently verified guarantee.
Following that sequence gives you the result Cricut documents: a printed-vinyl sticker covered by a protective laminate and cut with Print Then Cut. The laminate, compatible sensor, inkjet printing, and careful surface preparation are the parts that determine whether the process works as intended.
