Sometimes—but not with the documented approaches without touching wiring. You can keep an old doorbell button and chime while adding smart notifications or automations, but the examples available integrate a module into the existing circuit or connect a sensor at the indoor chime. That is different from adding a camera, which generally means replacing the outdoor button. If you mean no wiring contact at all, the options below do not establish a way to keep the entire original wired setup and make it smart.
First decide what “smart” means for your doorbell
A smart notification setup can tell your phone or home-automation system that someone pressed the existing button. It may preserve both the outdoor button and indoor chime, but does not by itself provide a view of the visitor or two-way video.
A video doorbell adds camera and intercom features at the entrance. Wired models are generally replacements for the existing outdoor button; their power and chime arrangements vary by model. Keeping the old chime is therefore a separate compatibility question, not a guarantee that the old button stays in place.

Integrate a sensor into the analog doorbell circuit
Shelly describes its Plus Uni smart-doorbell setup as integrating into an analog doorbell circuit, detecting the bell signal, and sending information over Wi-Fi while retaining the analog chime. This is a circuit-integration approach, not a wireless, no-contact conversion. Check the product’s current documentation and compatibility with your particular doorbell before proceeding.

Connect a sensor at a compatible indoor chime
Qolsys describes its IQ Doorbell (model QS1119-840) as connecting to an existing indoor chime so the pre-wired bell and outdoor button can remain. The product is intended for a Qolsys system context; verify compatibility with your panel and region. Qolsys also describes automations such as triggering porch lighting or camera recording.
When a video doorbell is the better fit
If you want live video, recording, or two-way conversation, look at video doorbells as replacements for the outside button. Before buying, confirm how the exact model gets power and handles the chime: it may use the existing chime, require a power kit or bypass, or use a separate wireless chime.

What if you do not want to touch wiring at all?
Neither the circuit module approach nor the Qolsys chime-side sensor is established as a no-wiring-contact retrofit. A battery-powered video doorbell may avoid using the doorbell’s power wiring, but it replaces the outside device; it does not make the original button and wired chime smart. Google notes that a battery Nest Doorbell may use its internal rechargeable batteries, while its indoor power adapter is a separate, non-weatherproof accessory (Google’s adapter guidance).

Check compatibility and safety before choosing
- Identify your goal: notifications while retaining the old hardware, or camera and video intercom features.
- Check the whole chime path: confirm whether the device supports your existing mechanical or electronic chime, needs a bypass or power kit, or uses a separate wireless chime.
- Verify power requirements: compare the exact model’s transformer and chime requirements with your existing setup. The Wemo transformer ratings above apply to Belkin’s specified mechanical-chime configuration, not to doorbells generally.
- Follow the model’s installation instructions: Belkin directs installers to turn off power to the doorbell circuit before starting. Do not assume another model has identical instructions or wiring.
- Get qualified help if needed: if you cannot confidently identify the low-voltage doorbell circuit or verify compatibility, consult a qualified installer and check applicable local requirements.
