Usually, your save can survive the end of temporary access, but your right to launch the game may not. Whether you can continue depends on the exact offer (a game trial, a subscription catalogue, or a demo), the game’s save system, the platform and account you use, and whether you buy the game or renew access. Treat these as separate questions: is the save still stored, can the game be launched, and can the save be transferred?
First, clarify what “free-to-play period” means
The phrase is often used for several different arrangements. A normal free-to-play game is permanently available without an upfront purchase, although it may sell optional content. A limited trial gives you a fixed amount of time or play time in one game. A subscription catalogue lets you play while your subscription or a promotional entitlement is active. A demo may be a separate build with different save behavior. Policies for one category do not automatically apply to another.
A limited trial of one game
A trial usually runs the same application as the full game but blocks access when the trial allowance ends. If the publisher supports carry-over, the save remains in the same game installation and can be used after you purchase the full version. The exact edition and platform still matter.
Temporary access through a subscription
A catalogue subscription grants a license to launch selected games while the entitlement is active. When it expires, the software may remain installed and the save may remain on the console or in cloud storage, but the license check can prevent the game from starting. Renewal rules can be different from purchase rules.

A demo or promotional event
Demos sometimes use a separate executable, a restricted area, or a dedicated save directory. A demo may not expose its progress to the retail game at all. Only the game’s own support documentation can establish compatibility.
The three outcomes you must check
1. Is the save file retained?
Cloud-backed saves are normally associated with your platform account or game account. A local save is stored on the device. Either can remain after access ends, but a cloud save is useful only if the same account and supported platform can retrieve it. Never assume that an installed game means its local files are still present after an uninstall, device reset, or storage cleanup.
2. Can you still launch the game?
Access is a licensing question, not a save question. A provider can leave your progression intact while disabling the game when a trial, subscription, or promotional entitlement expires. You may need to purchase the game, renew the subscription, or wait for another entitlement before the save can be opened.

3. Can the progression move to another version?
Moving from a trial to the purchased version on the same platform is often the simplest case. Moving from one console family to another, from console to PC, or between different publisher accounts is a separate transfer policy. Unless the game’s official guidance explicitly supports it, regard cross-platform transfer as unavailable.
What the published policies say
EA Play limited trials on PlayStation
PlayStation’s EA Play trial FAQ gives a clear example of a time-limited trial. It states: “Yes, after your limited trial of the latest EA games ends, your progress will carry over. You can continue where you left off if you decide to purchase the game.” In practical terms, you can keep the trial save and resume after buying the corresponding game, but you must purchase it to continue once the trial has ended. The same PlayStation support information says EA Play save files remain if you rejoin EA Play after cancelling. That describes returning to the service; it is not a promise that a save will transfer to every other platform, account, edition, or game.

Ubisoft free termed access
Ubisoft’s free-termed-access terms separate game availability from saved progression. They say that when the free access expires, “the games will become unavailable, but your saved progression will be kept for games that support cloud saves or if you keep your local saved files.” The qualification is important: the game is blocked, and retention depends on cloud-save support or preservation of the local files. Renewing a Ubisoft subscription later
A separate Ubisoft subscription document is more limited. It says: “Should you not have purchased the game outside of Ubisoft+, Ubisoft may, at its sole discretion, choose to save your progression and/or any in-game purchases should you decide to later renew your Subscription.” This is discretionary, not a guaranteed restoration policy, and the terms direct readers to a title-specific list. A later renewal therefore requires checking whether the particular game is covered. The wording appears in the Ubisoft Subscription Terms 2.0.
EA Play bundled with Xbox Game Pass
EA Help says EA Play is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, with different platform coverage for each. The same page says Core and Standard do not include EA Play. That information tells you which entitlement may grant access; it does not establish the save rule for an individual EA game. Protect your progress before access ends
Do these checks while the game still launches. They reduce the chance of losing a local file and give you a record of the account and edition you used.
- Identify the entitlement. Write down whether you are using a one-game trial, a catalogue subscription, a demo, or a one-time promotion. Note the exact game edition and the platform store that granted access.
- Confirm the account identity. Record the platform account and, where applicable, the publisher account linked to the save. Avoid switching profiles just before the trial ends; a different profile can appear to have no progression even when the original save still exists.
- Check cloud-save support. Open the game’s official support page and search for its save, cloud, cross-progression, and platform-transfer rules. A provider-level statement is not enough if the title is excluded or uses a special save system.
- Allow synchronization to finish. Connect the device to the internet, return to the game’s main menu, and wait for any upload or synchronization indicator to complete. Do not shut down during an active save operation.
- Preserve local files when the platform permits it. If the game stores saves locally, follow the platform’s official backup or export procedure. Do not copy files between platforms unless the publisher documents that method; many games encrypt or sign saves.
- Capture the exact edition. Note the platform, generation, region, and edition name. A standard edition, upgraded edition, remaster, or cloud-streamed version may use a different save location or transfer rule.
- Plan the resume action. If you intend to buy the game, use the same store family and account whenever the support policy requires it. If you intend to renew, verify that the title remains in the catalogue and that any renewal-preservation language applies to it.
What to do when the period has already expired
If the game is installed but will not start
Do not delete the installation or saved-data folder first. Confirm that the trial or subscription entitlement has actually ended, then check whether the store offers the same title for purchase or whether the subscription can be renewed. Sign in with the original platform and game accounts. A license refresh may require restarting the device or opening the store while online, but follow the platform’s documented steps rather than repeatedly reinstalling.

Check the active profile, region, and edition before assuming the save was erased. Look for a cloud-download or synchronization option in the game’s save-management screen. If you used local storage, verify that the original device or backup is still available. Do not create a new profile and overwrite an existing slot while troubleshooting.

If you bought the game and the save still does not appear
Verify that the purchase is for the same title and platform version covered by the trial. A purchase on one platform does not automatically grant a license on another. Then confirm that the game account is linked to the same platform account used during the trial. Contact the publisher with the platform, edition, account identifier, and the date the trial ended; avoid sending passwords or payment details.

Cloud storage is not the same as cross-platform progression. A console cloud backup can restore a save to another console of the same supported family without making that save readable by the PC version. Likewise, a publisher account can be linked to several platforms while a particular game still restricts progression to one platform.
Buying the game or renewing access: choose deliberately

Do not treat a saved game as a permanent license. Keeping the file preserves the possibility of resuming, not the right to play without a purchase or active entitlement. Conversely, buying the game does not guarantee that a demo save, a different edition, or a save tied to another account will be recognized.

- Assuming “free-to-play” means one universal policy. Identify the exact offer and read the game-specific rules.
- Confusing installation with access. An installed application can be locked when its license expires.
- Assuming all saves are cloud saves. Some titles retain only local files, and Ubisoft’s free-termed-access language makes that distinction explicit.
- Changing accounts during a purchase. Buy and resume with the account that created or synchronized the original save unless the game documents another method.
- Assuming a platform transfer. Same-game, same-platform carry-over is not proof of console-to-PC or account-to-account transfer.
- Deleting files to fix a license error. Reinstalling can remove a local save; troubleshoot the entitlement first and back up according to platform guidance.
- Relying on a provider’s general statement for every title. Catalogue lists, exclusions, and game-specific save systems can change the result.
A quick decision test
- What exactly ended: a trial, a subscription entitlement, or a demo?
- Does the game’s official page say that progress carries over to the purchased version or survives renewal?
- Is the save cloud-backed, local, or publisher-managed?
- Are you using the same platform account, game account, edition, and region?
- Will you purchase the game, renew access, or move to another platform?
If the answers are “same game and platform,” “supported save,” and “same accounts,” your chances of resuming are strong. If any answer is unknown, resolve that item before deleting data or paying for a different edition. The official terms for your exact game are the final authority because temporary offers and title support vary.
