Yes, a Windows PC usually keeps working after Microsoft ends support, but it is not as safe as a supported PC. The computer does not suddenly shut down; instead, it stops receiving the regular security fixes, software updates and technical assistance that address newly discovered problems. That leaves the operating system increasingly exposed to malware and other threats.
For Windows 10 version 22H2, support ended on October 14, 2025. Your practical choices are to upgrade an eligible computer to Windows 11, enroll an eligible personal device in Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for a limited bridge period, or replace an ineligible computer. Antivirus remains useful, but it cannot replace missing Windows security updates.
What happens when Windows support ends?
End of support is a lifecycle event, not a remote kill switch. A supported Windows installation can continue starting, running desktop applications, opening files and connecting to the internet after its support date. Existing hardware and software do not automatically stop working on that day.

For Windows 10 version 22H2, Microsoft ended normal support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides the normal stream of operating-system updates, security updates, fixes or technical assistance for that release. Some applications and hardware vendors may continue their own support, but that does not restore protection in the Windows components themselves.

Microsoft describes the security consequence plainly: “Without regular security updates from Microsoft, the operating system remains exposed to new threats.” There is no published risk percentage that can tell you exactly how likely a particular unsupported PC is to be compromised. The defensible conclusion is narrower: an unpatched operating system has more unresolved exposure than a supported one, and the gap can grow as new vulnerabilities are discovered.
Support dates apply to a specific release
Do not apply the Windows 10 date to every Windows computer. Support depends on the product, edition and version installed. Windows 10 version 22H2 is the release covered by the October 14, 2025 date in Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance. Other Windows releases can have different dates. Identify your own version before making a decision.
Check exactly what is installed
Use both the version information and Windows Update status. This prevents a Windows 10 lifecycle date from being misapplied to another edition or release.

- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10, or Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11. Install any updates offered there and read the status message about support or eligibility.
- Write down whether the computer is a personal-use device or managed by an employer or school. Consumer ESU rules are not the same as organizational licensing arrangements.
If the computer is already on a supported Windows 11 release, the question is not whether Windows 10 support ended; it is whether Windows Update is functioning normally. If it reports that the Windows 10 device is out of support, continue with the choices below.
Your main choices
| Path | When it fits | What you get | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade to Windows 11 | The current PC meets Microsoft’s eligibility requirements | A supported operating system on the existing hardware | The upgrade may require preparation, storage and compatibility checks |
| Windows 10 Consumer ESU | An eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 device in a qualifying market needs temporary coverage | Critical and important security updates for the ESU period | No new features, non-security updates or technical support; regional terms and end date apply |
| Replace the computer | The device is ineligible for Windows 11, unreliable, or no longer suitable for the workload | A new Windows 11 laptop or desktop with a current support lifecycle | Hardware cost, migration effort and possible accessory or application changes |
| Continue without a supported path | Only as a short, controlled transition while arranging an upgrade or replacement | The existing computer continues to run | Windows remains without normal security fixes, so exposure increases over time |
Option 1: Upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11
Microsoft identifies upgrading an eligible PC as the preferred way to move to a supported Windows version. Start with Windows Update rather than an unofficial installer or a workaround designed to bypass compatibility checks.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Back up documents, photos, browser data and any application-specific files to a separate drive or approved cloud location. Confirm that you can open a few restored files before starting.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. On eligible systems, Windows Update presents the Windows 11 upgrade offer or an equivalent eligibility message.
- Read the compatibility result. If Windows Update says the PC is not eligible, do not treat an unsupported installation method as equivalent to an approved upgrade; use ESU temporarily if available or plan a replacement.
- Connect the computer to reliable power, close work in progress and allow the installation to complete. The process can restart the PC several times.
- After Windows 11 starts, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install the offered updates and restart when requested.
- Verify that your printer, accessibility tools, security software and essential applications work before deleting the backup or old installation files.
An upgrade changes the operating system but does not automatically make an old computer ideal for every task. If it is slow, has failing storage, lacks required ports or cannot meet your accessibility needs, replacement may be the more dependable long-term answer even when an upgrade is technically possible.
Option 2: Use Windows 10 Consumer ESU as a bridge
Microsoft describes Consumer Extended Security Updates for qualifying personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most markets. ESU is a temporary security measure, not a continuation of normal Windows 10 support.
What ESU includes
- Critical and important security updates during the applicable ESU period.
- Enrollment through Settings when the device and region are eligible.
What ESU does not include
- New Windows features.
- Non-security updates and general product improvements.
- Technical support for the operating system.
Eligibility can depend on region, device circumstances and whether the installation is a qualifying personal-use copy. Do not assume that every Windows 10 computer will show an enrollment option. If Settings does not offer ESU, verify the edition and version first, then follow Microsoft’s current regional guidance rather than entering payment or enrollment details on an unrelated website.
The official ESU dates conflict
Microsoft’s official pages currently show different end dates for consumer coverage. The Windows end-of-support page says eligible devices receive updates through October 13, 2026. A Microsoft Support article says consumer ESU can protect devices until October 12, 2027. Because these statements conflict, neither date should be treated as a universal promise.
| Official page described by Microsoft | Date shown | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Windows end-of-support page | October 13, 2026 | One published end date for eligible consumer ESU devices |
| Microsoft Support article | October 12, 2027 | A different published end date for consumer ESU |
Before enrolling, read the end date and terms displayed for your device and region in Settings. Keep a reminder to recheck that screen if Microsoft changes the program. ESU should buy time to complete a migration or replacement plan, not become an assumption that Windows 10 will receive ordinary support indefinitely.

Option 3: Replace an ineligible or unsuitable PC
Microsoft lists replacing an ineligible computer with a new Windows 11 PC as a supported path. Choose the category of machine around your actual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all specification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Match the replacement to the workload
- Basic home use: web browsing, email, documents and video calls usually call for a modest Windows 11 laptop or desktop, with enough memory and storage for your applications and files.
- Creative or technical work: check the requirements of your editing, development, engineering or virtual-machine software first. The application’s requirements matter more than a generic “Windows 11 ready” label.
- Accessibility: verify screen-reader, magnification, speech, alternative-input and display requirements before buying. Test the ports and peripherals you depend on.
- Portability: compare weight, battery claims, screen size, keyboard layout and charging options if the computer travels with you.
- Longevity: confirm that the model is sold with Windows 11 and that firmware, drivers and the manufacturer’s support information are available for the hardware.
Plan the migration
- Inventory the applications, browser profiles, password-manager vaults, licenses and peripherals you use.
- Back up the old PC and export data from applications that do not synchronize automatically.
- Set up the new PC, run Windows Update repeatedly until no further updates are offered, and enable the security features supplied with Windows.
- Install applications from their publishers, sign in to your accounts and restore a small sample of files before moving everything.
- Keep the old PC disconnected or powered off until you have verified that essential work is available on the replacement.
- Erase the old storage securely before recycling, donating or trading in the machine.
Why antivirus is not enough
Antivirus can detect or block some malicious files and activity, so it remains a useful layer. It does not patch vulnerabilities in the Windows kernel, networking components, drivers or other operating-system code. Microsoft specifically warns that antivirus alone does not close the exposure created when Windows stops receiving regular security updates.
Adding another security product therefore cannot turn an unsupported Windows installation into a supported one. Treat antivirus as defense in depth while you arrange an upgrade, ESU enrollment or replacement.
If you must keep using the unsupported PC temporarily
These steps reduce avoidable exposure during a transition. They do not restore Microsoft’s missing security fixes, and they should not be used to justify keeping an unsupported system indefinitely.
- Install every update still offered for Windows, your browser, document viewers and other applications.
- Keep reputable antivirus and the built-in firewall enabled, and investigate any warning instead of dismissing it.
- Use a standard (non-administrator) account for everyday work. Elevate privileges only when a trusted installation requires it.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, banking, cloud storage and other important accounts. Use unique passwords stored in a reputable password manager.
- Maintain more than one backup, including a copy that is disconnected from the PC. Test restoration rather than assuming a backup is usable.
- Avoid installing pirated software, unknown browser extensions or utilities offered through unsolicited pop-ups and email links.
- Do sensitive work, such as banking or handling confidential business data, on a supported device whenever possible.
- Separate the unsupported PC from important home or office systems using the network controls available on your router or organization’s network.
- Set a specific migration date. A written deadline prevents a temporary workaround from becoming a permanent security decision.
How to choose the safest path
Choose an upgrade when
Windows Update confirms that the current hardware is eligible, the computer still meets your performance and accessibility needs, and you want a supported operating system without buying a replacement immediately.

Choose ESU when
The device is a qualifying personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 installation, Settings offers enrollment in your region, and you need a short period to save money, move data or wait for a planned purchase. Record the exact end date and terms shown during enrollment.
Choose replacement when
The PC fails Windows 11 eligibility checks, has unreliable hardware, cannot run required applications acceptably, or no longer fits your work, accessibility or portability requirements. Replacement is also the clearest option when you need a supported platform for sensitive or business-critical work and cannot accept an ESU-only bridge.
Do not choose “antivirus only” as a support strategy
Antivirus may remain installed on any of the paths above, but it is not an alternative to operating-system updates. If the only plan is to keep using Windows 10 without Windows 11 eligibility, ESU or replacement, describe that accurately as a risk-increasing temporary state rather than a safe, supported configuration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the PC will stop working: end of support normally removes updates and assistance; it does not automatically disable the computer.
- Assuming every Windows version shares the Windows 10 date: check the edition and version reported by
winver. - Assuming ESU equals normal support: ESU is limited to specified security updates and excludes features, non-security fixes and technical support.
- Quoting one ESU end date as universal: Microsoft’s official pages currently conflict, so verify the date shown for your region and enrollment.
- Using unofficial upgrade bypasses without understanding the trade-off: an unsupported installation is not the same as Microsoft-confirmed eligibility.
- Buying a replacement without a migration plan: account access, application licenses, backups and accessibility peripherals can matter as much as the hardware.
Bottom line
You can continue to operate a Windows PC after it stops receiving updates, but you cannot call it as safe as a supported installation. For Windows 10 version 22H2, normal support ended on October 14, 2025. Check your exact version, use Windows Update to determine Windows 11 eligibility, and select the path that fits your timing: upgrade an eligible PC, use regional Consumer ESU only as a limited bridge, or replace an ineligible or unsuitable computer. Keep antivirus and good security practices in place, but do not mistake them for the operating-system fixes that Microsoft no longer supplies.
