No—stop using an iPhone Duo if its inner glass is cracked, an edge is sharp or lifting, touch input has failed, a black area is spreading, or the phone resists folding. Apple’s safety guidance says, “Don’t use iPhone with cracked glass, as it may cause injury.” Arrange an inspection with Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider instead of trying to stabilize the display yourself.
A bubble or peeling area may be damage to the separate inner cover layer rather than the flexible display panel. That layer has reportedly been described as replaceable by Apple hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron, but the report does not make owner removal safe and does not prove that the panel, hinge, or enclosure underneath is intact.
What “damaged inner screen” can mean
A foldable phone’s inner display is a system of layers. The visible cover layer protects the flexible display panel beneath it, while the hinge and enclosure control how the assembly bends. A defect that looks like a screen-protector problem can therefore involve one layer, the panel, the hinge, or the phone’s frame. You cannot reliably identify the failed part from appearance alone.
Cracked glass or a sharp edge
Any crack in the inner glass is a stop-using condition. Cracks can leave sharp fragments or edges where your finger, palm, or face may contact the display. Do not continue swiping around the crack to see whether the phone still works, and do not cover it with tape or a generic film.

Bubbles, lifting, or a peeling cover layer
A bubble, crescent-shaped lift, or film-like layer separating near the crease may be the replaceable cover layer. It may also be a symptom of damage below it. Pressing the bubble flat, cutting away a loose section, applying adhesive, or adding heat can transfer force into the flexible panel and make an inspection harder. Treat a lifting layer as a service issue even when touch still responds.
Panel, touch, hinge, or enclosure symptoms
Dead touch zones, black pixels or a dark area that is growing, visible lines, distortion, or a crease that is changing indicate that the display assembly may be involved. A hinge that feels tight, gritty, misaligned, or otherwise different from normal is another reason to stop folding and unfolding the phone. Gaps, dents, or a bent enclosure can place continuing pressure on the display.

Why continued use is a bad trade-off
The immediate, documented safety concern is injury from cracked glass. Continued folding can also turn a small cover-layer defect into a larger separation or expose more of the display to contact. If touch is intermittent, an accidental tap can trigger calls, purchases, deletion, or settings changes. What to do immediately
- Stop touching the damaged area. Keep fingers away from any sharp, cracked, or lifted edge. Do not test the spot repeatedly.
- Leave the phone in its least-stressed position. If the hinge feels tight, gritty, or misaligned, avoid folding or unfolding it. Do not press the halves together to flatten a raised section.
- Do not apply materials or heat. Avoid generic screen films, adhesive, solvents, hair dryers, heat guns, blades, and pressure. Do not peel or trim the inner layer.

The practical distinction is important:
- Cover-layer replacement: A technician may be able to replace the outer layer when the flexible panel and surrounding hardware pass inspection.
- Full display assembly replacement: If the panel is cracked, electrically damaged, distorted, or otherwise outside specification, replacing only the cover will not solve the problem.
- Hinge or enclosure repair: If the mechanism or frame is bent or misaligned, that condition may change which display repair is appropriate and whether the phone is eligible for a particular service route.

Tell the provider when the defect appeared, whether the phone was dropped or exposed to pressure, and whether the hinge changed at the same time. The technician should establish which layer is damaged and check related hardware before quoting a repair.

Questions the inspection should answer
- Is the visible defect limited to the cover layer, or is the flexible panel also damaged?
- Does touch work across the entire inner display, and are black areas or lines expanding?
- Is the hinge moving normally, without grit, resistance, or misalignment?
- Has the enclosure remained straight enough for a replacement display to align correctly?
