Sometimes. A TP-Link router is not automatically unsafe because it is old, and there is no universal replacement age in TP-Link’s published guidance. The decision depends on the exact model, hardware version, purchase region, end-of-life status and whether security firmware is still available. A supported router with current updates can remain in service; an unsupported model with no fix should be replaced because configuration changes cannot correct an unpatched vulnerability.

What determines whether your TP-Link router is safe to keep?

Router age is only a clue. TP-Link treats support at the model-and-hardware-version level, so two devices with nearly identical names can have different firmware and security status. Check these five facts before deciding:

  • The complete model number printed on the router.
  • The hardware revision, such as V1, V2 or another version label.
  • The TP-Link support page for the region where the device was purchased.
  • Whether that model or version appears on the current regional end-of-life (EOL) list.
  • Whether a security update exists for the exact version, including any fix identified in TP-Link’s CVE-2023-50224 advisory.

TP-Link’s US lifecycle page, updated September 21, 2026, says EOL applies when production ends for a model or a specific version. The listing can change without notice, and model availability differs by region. EOL therefore tells you that production has ended; it does not mean the router stops routing traffic on a particular day. You still need to verify maintenance and firmware status.

How to identify the exact model and hardware version

Read the product label

Turn the router over and photograph the label before searching. Record the full model name, hardware version and any regional suffix. TP-Link says that when no version is shown, the device is version 1 (often written V1 or v1). Do not omit the version simply because the model number matches a result online: firmware for another revision may be incompatible.

Confirm the information in the management interface

Sign in to the router’s local web management page or the Tether app, if that model supports it. Look for a status, system or device-information screen showing the model and current firmware. Use the label as the authoritative hardware-version check, then use the interface to record the installed firmware build.

Why the version matters

Security advisories and downloads can list separate outcomes for V1, V2 and later revisions. A patch for one revision does not establish that another revision is patched. Keep the complete model/version string beside you whenever you search TP-Link’s support pages.

Use the support site for the router’s purchase region

Go to TP-Link’s regional support site for the country or market where the router was bought. TP-Link warns that firmware files for regions such as the United States and the European Union differ and are not interchangeable. A download that appears to match the model name can still be the wrong regional build.

  1. Select the product category and enter the complete model number.
  2. Choose the exact hardware version shown on the label.
  3. Set or confirm the purchase region before opening firmware downloads.
  4. Read the release notes and publication date for each available file.
  5. Compare the listed fixed version with the firmware currently installed on your router.

If the regional page does not list your revision, do not substitute a file from another country or a visually similar model. Contact TP-Link support or your distributor for clarification instead of experimenting with firmware.

How to interpret EOL and support status

EOL is a lifecycle signal, not an instant shutdown

When TP-Link lists a model or version as EOL, production has ended for that item. The router may continue to function, but the listing is a reason to check whether security maintenance is still being provided. TP-Link’s regional lists are not identical, so check the page that covers your device and purchase market.

Separate three questions

  • Can the router still operate? EOL status alone does not answer this; a powered router can continue providing network access.
  • Is the exact version still receiving security fixes? Check the support page and advisories for your hardware revision.
  • Is there a known issue with no fix? An advisory may classify a version as patched, partially patched or unpatched.

Do not infer update status from the purchase date, the router’s age or the fact that an automatic-update menu is present. Verify the current firmware listing for the exact model and revision.

What TP-Link’s CVE-2023-50224 advisory means

TP-Link’s UK advisory, updated May 12, 2026, lists affected model-and-version combinations for CVE-2023-50224. It gives each listed combination a remediation state: patched, partially patched or unpatched. Some legacy models received updates where TP-Link judged that a fix was technically feasible; other versions have no available fix. The advisory also notes that model availability varies by region.

TP-Link rates this vulnerability CVSS v3.0 6.5, Medium. That number is a severity rating for the vulnerability, not the probability that your household will be attacked and not a prediction of compromise for an individual router. The advisory’s table is specific to CVE-2023-50224; it is not a complete security history for every TP-Link model or a statement that every older router has the same exposure.

Find your exact model and hardware version in the advisory, then follow the fixed firmware version listed for your region when one is available. If your combination is absent, that does not prove the router has no other security issues; continue using the regional support page and current advisories.

Keep, patch or replace: a practical decision framework

Finding for your exact version Recommended action Why
Supported and has current security firmware Keep it and install updates through TP-Link’s supported process. Active maintenance gives you a path to address newly disclosed issues.
Affected by CVE-2023-50224 and a regional fix is listed Apply the specified firmware, after backing up settings. TP-Link identifies a remediation for that model/version combination.
Affected and marked partially patched Install every available update, then assess whether the remaining exposure is acceptable. “Partially patched” is not equivalent to fully remediated.
Unsupported or unpatched with no applicable fix Replace it with supported hardware that receives regular security updates. Mitigations can reduce exposure but cannot supply a missing firmware fix.

If your router is supported: maintain it

Download updates only from the official regional product page. Check release notes for security changes, install the newest firmware that names your exact hardware revision, and confirm the resulting version after the reboot. Recheck the support page periodically because TP-Link can revise lifecycle listings and remediation decisions.

Keep a current configuration backup so a failed update or factory reset does not erase your internet, Wi-Fi and port-forwarding settings. If your ISP requires a particular connection type or VLAN setting, record those values before starting.

How to update TP-Link firmware safely

  1. Identify the hardware. Confirm the model and hardware version on the label and in the management interface.
  2. Download the regional file. Use TP-Link’s support site for the purchase region and select the matching revision. Read the release notes.
  3. Back up the configuration. Use the router’s backup or export setting and store the file somewhere other than the router.
  4. Connect reliably. Prefer a wired computer connection to a LAN port. Do not begin while power or broadband service is unstable.
  5. Open the update control. Depending on the model, use the web management page’s firmware-update screen, or use the Tether app on models with TP-Link Cloud support.
  6. Upload or select the file. Recheck the model, hardware version and regional file before confirming.
  7. Do not interrupt the process. TP-Link warns against powering off the router or disconnecting Ethernet during an update. Wait for the device to reboot fully.
  8. Verify the result. Sign in again, confirm the new firmware version and test wired and wireless connectivity.

Menus differ across generations, so do not force a path from another model’s manual. If the update fails, leave the router powered, wait through the full restart period specified by its documentation and then check the version. Repeating an update with a file for a different revision can make the problem worse.

What to do when no firmware fix exists

TP-Link recommends moving affected or potentially affected legacy devices to a supported product when the exact version has no available fix. This is the clearest course for an unpatched router exposed to the internet. A supported replacement may be from a current Wi-Fi 7 generation, but Wi-Fi 7 is not required for every home; the essential requirement is an actively maintained device that fits your connection and coverage needs.

Risk-reduction steps for unavoidable temporary use

If replacement cannot happen immediately, treat these measures as temporary risk reduction, not a substitute for a patch:

  • Install the latest firmware available for the exact model and hardware version.
  • Turn off remote administration from the internet.
  • Disable services you do not use, such as unnecessary cloud, sharing or port-forwarding features.
  • Limit administration to trusted internal networks and use a strong, unique administrator password.
  • Watch for unexpected DNS changes, unfamiliar network activity, new administrator settings or unexplained reboots.
  • Plan a replacement rather than treating the mitigations as a permanent security solution.

Changing a password, hiding the Wi-Fi name or disabling one feature does not repair vulnerable router code. If the model is unpatched, the fundamental limitation remains.

Choosing a replacement without overbuying

Start the replacement process only after the model-specific diagnosis. Confirm that the new router supports your ISP’s connection type, required authentication and any VLAN or modem arrangement. Check whether its wireless coverage matches the home, whether you need wired multi-gigabit ports, guest networking, parental controls or mesh expansion, and how the manufacturer publishes security updates and EOL notices.

Do not assume a particular wireless generation works with every ISP or that the newest standard is necessary. TP-Link’s guidance points to supported hardware broadly, with Wi-Fi 7 as one category, not as a universal requirement. The meaningful upgrade is a device with a current support policy and a clear path for obtaining security firmware.

Common mistakes that leave an old router exposed

  • Searching by model name only: the same family can contain different hardware revisions.
  • Installing a US file on an EU device, or the reverse: regional firmware is not interchangeable.
  • Assuming EOL means immediate failure: EOL ends production; it does not itself describe today’s firmware state.
  • Assuming “partially patched” means fixed: read the advisory’s exact remediation language.
  • Updating over an unstable connection: an interrupted flash can leave the router unusable.
  • Relying on mitigations forever: disabling remote management lowers exposure but cannot replace vendor code fixes.

How often should you recheck?

Revisit the regional support page whenever TP-Link publishes a security advisory, releases a firmware build or changes its EOL list. TP-Link notes that both lifecycle listings and vulnerability remediation can change as additional updates are evaluated. Keep a note of your model, hardware revision and installed firmware so each check takes minutes rather than guesswork.

The answer for your router

You can keep using a TP-Link router when its exact model and hardware version remain supported and have current security firmware, or when an applicable advisory fix is available and installed. If the version is unpatched and unsupported, replace it with supported hardware. Until then, use the documented exposure-reduction steps only as a short-term measure, and do not treat the router’s age alone as either a safety guarantee or a reason for automatic replacement.
