Yes. A Pixel does not stop working when Google’s update-support period ends, but Google no longer lists that model as receiving its Android version and security updates. Whether to keep using it depends on the exact model, the update level it currently shows, what you do on the phone, and how comfortable you are with that support gap. Check Google’s current schedule before deciding; support periods differ by model.

What changes when Pixel updates end?

The phone’s physical usability and its software support are separate things. The end of a support period does not mean the handset suddenly stops turning on, nor does it establish that every app will immediately stop working. It means Google no longer lists the model as receiving the Android version and security updates covered by its support schedule.

That distinction matters because app updates, Android OS updates, security updates and Google Play system updates are not interchangeable. An app may still receive updates through Google Play, and some Android system components can receive updates outside the usual Android release cycle. Neither fact proves that the phone continues to receive comprehensive OS and security support from Google.

Google’s Pixel support page is the place to verify whether a particular model is still within its stated window. The Android Security Bulletin documents security issues and fixes, but it is not a substitute for checking whether Google lists your specific Pixel as supported. No universal safe-use cutoff or individual-phone risk estimate is established by these sources, so an end date should be treated as a real support gap—not as proof that a phone is instantly dangerous or harmless.

How long does Google support each Pixel?

Google’s current schedule, checked October 13, 2026, groups Pixel models by the length of their OS and security update support. Google measures these periods from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US, not from the date an individual owner bought the phone. A phone bought later, including a used one, does not get a new support clock based on its purchase date.

Pixel models Google’s stated OS and security update period How to interpret it
Pixel 8 and later models listed in the current schedule, including Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a, Pixel 9 generation, Pixel 10 generation and Pixel 11 generation Seven years from first US Google Store availability Use Google’s live schedule to confirm the exact model and current policy.
Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations, and Pixel Fold Five years from first US Google Store availability The period is model-specific; the schedule determines whether a given phone is still inside it.
Pixel 5a and earlier models listed by Google No longer receiving Android version updates and security updates, according to the current schedule Check the live page for exact model names and any policy changes.

Google announced the seven-year commitment for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on October 4, 2023, specifying Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. The current support schedule also places Pixel 8 and later in a seven-year group. The commitment should not be generalized to older Pixels or treated as an independent security assessment. Google’s schedule is the most useful source for checking the current policy: Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones. Google’s original announcement is at 7 years of software updates for the Pixel 8 series.

The schedule describes a support period, not a prediction of how long a particular phone will function or a guarantee that every device will receive each update on the same date. Google says updates roll out gradually and may depend on the carrier and device; delivery can take a few weeks. If your model is still within its period but has not received an update yet, that rollout timing is worth checking before concluding that support has ended.

How to check your Pixel’s model and update level

  1. Identify the exact model. Open Settings and find the phone’s model information. Menu names and locations can vary by Android version, so use the Settings search if you do not see the model details promptly.
  2. Check the Android version and security update level. Google says both are available in Settings. Record what the phone shows rather than relying on when you remember receiving an update.
  3. Compare that model with Google’s current support schedule. Look for the model name and its stated OS and security update period on Google’s Pixel software-update page.
  4. Allow for rollout timing. If the model is still supported but appears behind, Google says rollout can take a few weeks and can vary with carrier and device. A delay is not by itself proof that the support period has ended.
  5. Decide based on your use. Consider what accounts and data you access from the phone and the consequences a security issue could have for you. The cited official sources do not provide a numeric risk calculator or a universal rule for when an individual owner must stop using an unsupported Pixel.

Do not infer support status from the age of the phone alone: use the model-specific entry. Likewise, seeing a recent app update or a Google Play system update does not change the model’s position on Google’s OS and security update schedule. Check both the support period and what Settings reports; one does not replace the other.

Why app and Google Play system updates are not the same as full support

App updates

Google says its apps can be updated through Google Play. An app update can improve or change that app, but it does not mean the phone has received a new Android version or all of Google’s model-specific security updates. An updated app and an updated operating system are different layers of software.

Google Play system updates and Mainline

Android’s Mainline documentation describes selected Android system components that can be updated outside the normal Android release cycle, through Google Play system updates or a partner-provided over-the-air mechanism. The word “selected” matters: this channel concerns particular components, not a promise of comprehensive firmware, OS and security support for every part of an unsupported Pixel.

The Mainline documentation states that support for Android 11 and lower concluded as of Q4 2025. That platform-level statement does not establish the remaining support status of every Pixel model. Check the phone’s Android version and the current model-specific Google schedule rather than applying that statement as a blanket end date. See Android’s Mainline documentation.

Security bulletins

Android publishes security bulletins describing vulnerabilities and associated information. A bulletin is useful context for Android security, but it should not be read as evidence that a particular unsupported Pixel receives all the fixes described. Google’s current Pixel schedule establishes the model-specific support status; the Android Security Bulletin—May 2026 is dated May 4, 2026.

Should you keep using an unsupported Pixel or replace it?

There is no evidence-backed age at which every out-of-support Pixel becomes unsafe, and the official sources do not quantify the compromise risk for an individual phone. The practical choice is whether the phone still meets your needs and whether you accept using it without the vendor OS and security updates in Google’s support schedule.

Decision factor Question to ask What the available information establishes
Support status Is this exact model inside Google’s published period? Google’s current schedule lists support periods by model; it does not determine the condition of an individual handset.
Update level What Android version and security update level does Settings show? Google says both can be checked in Settings. Rollouts may take a few weeks and vary by carrier and device.
Your use and consequences What accounts and data do you use on the phone, and how consequential would a security issue be? This is a personal decision factor. The cited sources do not assign a numeric risk to an unsupported phone.
Replacement trade-off Would a supported phone’s remaining update window justify replacing a device that otherwise meets your needs? Google’s schedule lets you compare stated update windows. It does not provide a price comparison or make replacement mandatory.

One way to make the choice concrete is to separate the questions. First, establish whether Google still lists the exact model for OS and security updates. Next, note the Android version and security update level shown in Settings. Finally, consider the accounts and data you use on the phone and what a security issue could mean for you. Those details clarify the support gap without pretending to calculate an individual risk score.

If you compare replacements, use the same checklist: look up the candidate model’s stated update window, consider how much of that period remains, and decide whether the cost of switching is worthwhile for your needs. Google’s schedule provides the update-window comparison, but not prices or a recommendation that every owner should replace an older phone. A supported replacement is an option for someone who wants continued vendor OS and security updates, not a requirement for every person with an older Pixel.

Keeping the phone is a choice to accept a known support gap; it is not automatically the wrong choice for every owner. Replacing it is an option for someone who wants continued vendor OS and security updates, not a requirement imposed by the mere fact that the phone still functions. When comparing another Pixel, check that model’s current schedule rather than assuming that a newer-looking name guarantees a particular support period.

What Google’s seven-year Pixel 8 commitment means

Google’s 2023 announcement attributed this commitment to Seang Chau, VP of Engineering, and Shenaz Zack, Director of Product Management: “We’re committing to providing seven years of software support for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops.” The statement describes Google’s commitment for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro; it does not mean every Pixel receives seven years of support. The current schedule should be consulted for other models and for any later policy changes.

For privacy and security information about Pixel features, Google also maintains its Google Pixel Privacy & Security Features page. That general product information does not replace the model-by-model update schedule when the question is whether a specific phone remains supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Pixel stop working when Google stops sending updates?

No. The end of Google’s support period does not mean the phone suddenly stops turning on or that every app immediately ceases to work. It means Google no longer lists that model as receiving the Android version and security updates in its schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep using a Pixel after it stops receiving updates?

Yes, but you would be using it with a known gap in vendor OS and security update support. There is no universal safe-use cutoff or published individual-phone risk estimate in the cited official sources. Consider the accounts and data you use on it and the consequences a security issue could have for you.

Do Google Play or app updates mean my Pixel is still fully supported?

No. Google apps can receive updates through Google Play, and selected Android system components can receive updates through Google Play system updates or a partner-provided mechanism. Those updates do not demonstrate that comprehensive OS and security support continues for an out-of-period model.

How do I know if my Pixel has reached the end of its support period?

Find the exact model and the Android version and security update level in Settings, then compare the model with Google’s current Pixel software-update schedule. Google measures the published period from when the model first became available on the Google Store in the US, not from your purchase date.

Why has my supported Pixel not received an update yet?

Google says updates roll out gradually and can depend on the carrier and device, with delivery taking a few weeks. A delay by itself does not prove that the model has reached its support end date; check the exact model against Google’s current schedule.

Does every Pixel get seven years of updates?

No. Google’s current schedule lists Pixel 8 and later models in its seven-year OS and security update group, while Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations and Pixel Fold are listed for five years. Pixel 5a and earlier models are listed as no longer receiving Android version and security updates. Check Google’s current page for the exact model and any policy changes.

Should I replace an unsupported Pixel right away?

The support schedule does not make replacement mandatory, and the cited official sources do not set a universal cutoff. Compare the phone’s support status, the update level in Settings, your use and risk tolerance, and the remaining update window and cost of a replacement.

The Bottom Line

A Pixel can remain usable after Google’s update period ends, but continued use is not the same as continued OS and security support. Check the exact model and update level in Settings against Google’s current schedule, allow for gradual rollouts, and decide whether the support gap is acceptable for your use. Replacing the phone is an option, not a universal requirement.
