No. Downloading a PlayStation Plus game does not turn it into a permanent purchase. A monthly game remains playable only while the account has an active PlayStation Plus membership, and a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title also depends on the required subscription tier and the title remaining in that catalog. When the membership ends, access to downloaded monthly games ends as well.
If you need long-term access to one particular game, purchase that game separately in the PlayStation Store or use a compatible boxed edition when one exists. A download is a local file; it is not proof that your account owns an unrestricted license.

What “keep permanently” means on PlayStation Plus
There are two different ideas that are easy to confuse:

- Subscription access: You may play while your membership is valid and any other service condition is satisfied.
PlayStation’s own FAQ asks whether PlayStation Plus games are “mine to keep?” Its answer is “Yes, for as long as you remain an active subscriber.” The qualification is decisive: adding a title to your library or downloading it does not remove the membership requirement.

This applies even if the game is installed on the console, appears in your library, or was downloaded before you cancelled. The account entitlement, not the presence of game data on the storage drive, controls access.
How each PlayStation Plus game category works
Monthly games
Monthly games can be added to your library and downloaded during the period in which they are offered. The entitlement remains tied to an active PlayStation Plus membership. PlayStation’s cancellation guidance states that previously downloaded monthly games are no longer available after the subscription ends.
Adding a monthly game is therefore useful for building a library you can revisit while subscribed, but it is not the same as buying the game. If you let the membership expire, the monthly-game entitlement is suspended. Renewing the membership can restore the subscription benefit, provided the title is still part of your entitlement and available under the applicable terms.
Game Catalog titles
Game Catalog access requires the plan that includes that catalog. On PlayStation’s US plan structure, the Extra tier includes the Game Catalog. A title can be downloaded while your plan qualifies, but access is conditional on both the membership and the game remaining in the service.
Catalog games can have announced departure dates. Downloading one before that date does not create a permanent license; when the title leaves the catalog, the service condition is no longer met.

Classics Catalog titles
Classics Catalog access requires the relevant higher tier. On the US page, Premium provides access to both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. As with other catalog games, your access depends on the subscription tier and continued availability. Check the current listing for the specific title rather than assuming every classic remains indefinitely.

Why downloading does not change the license
PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus Usage Terms state: “Games downloaded to your console are playable as long as you have a valid subscription and the game remains available in the service.” That sentence describes two simultaneous conditions:
- Your subscription must be valid for the game’s access category.
- The game must still be available through the service.
The downloaded package satisfies neither condition by itself. It simply avoids downloading the same data again while you are entitled to play. The console can retain files after an entitlement ends, but retaining files is different from retaining permission to launch and use them.
This is also why a Game Catalog download can stop working even when your membership has not expired: the title may have reached its announced removal date. Conversely, a monthly game does not become permanent merely because it has no individual catalog departure date; its access still depends on an active membership.
What happens when you cancel PlayStation Plus
Cancelling normally means stopping renewal, not ending the service immediately. PlayStation’s cancellation guidance says benefits continue until the end of the subscription period that has already been paid for.

- Turn off renewal or cancel the subscription. The account records that it should not renew for the next billing period.
- Continue using benefits until the listed end date. Monthly games and qualifying catalog titles remain available during the paid period, subject to catalog availability.
- Reach the subscription end date. Subscription benefits end, including access to downloaded monthly games.
- Choose a separate purchase if you need uninterrupted ownership. Buy the particular title, if a compatible digital or physical edition is available, rather than relying on the subscription entitlement.
The exact menu labels and cancellation process can vary by country, account type and whether the subscription was purchased through a console, web account or another retailer. Use the subscription-management page for your account and note the displayed expiration date before deleting anything from the console.

When a catalog game leaves before your membership ends
A catalog departure is separate from cancellation. PlayStation may show an end date for an individual Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title. Once that date passes, the download does not preserve access for the rest of your membership.
Before spending time on a long game, check its current catalog entry for an announced removal date. If the date is close, you have three practical choices:
- Finish the game before the listed date.
- Purchase the title separately, if it is sold for your console and region.
- Accept that progress may remain on the console without guaranteeing that the subscription copy can still be launched.
Catalog lists, prices, tiers and dates can change. Treat the current listing for the title as authoritative rather than relying on an old screenshot or a launch announcement.
DLC and add-ons do not necessarily remain usable
Buying downloadable content for a catalog game does not automatically give you an independent license to the base game. PlayStation’s FAQ and usage terms warn that add-ons purchased for a catalog title may become unusable if the membership expires or the base game leaves the service.

Access may return if you renew the qualifying membership or purchase the base game, but the add-on itself does not bypass the requirement for an accessible base game. Check the product page and platform compatibility before buying expensive expansions for a title you are playing through the catalog.

Buy the digital game
A separate PlayStation Store purchase is the clearest route when you want access without maintaining PlayStation Plus. PlayStation’s March 2026 terms describe Store digital purchases as a personal license for private, non-commercial use. That is different from a subscription entitlement and remains associated with the purchasing account under the applicable Store terms.
Confirm the exact edition and platform before paying. A PS4 version, PS5 version, cross-generation entitlement and regional listing can differ. Also check whether your saved data and purchased DLC are compatible with the edition you intend to own.
Use a boxed copy when one exists
A physical edition can provide an alternative license path for a particular game, but not every PlayStation Plus title has a disc release. Verify that the boxed version exists for your region, works with your console model and includes the edition you need. A disc designed for one PlayStation generation may not provide the same entitlement on another.

Do not assume that a boxed copy automatically includes digital extras, expansions or a newer-generation upgrade. Those details belong to the specific product listing and its publisher terms.

A practical checklist before you rely on a download
- Identify whether the game is a monthly game, Game Catalog title or Classics Catalog title.
- Confirm which membership tier grants access in your country.
- Look for an announced catalog departure date.
- Decide whether you need access only while subscribed or independently for the long term.
- Check whether the game is sold digitally for your console.
- If considering a disc, verify that a compatible physical edition actually exists.
- For DLC, confirm that the base game will remain accessible through the same license route.
- Record the subscription end date if you cancel so you know when access conditions change.
Common situations and the appropriate fix
“I downloaded a monthly game, but it is unavailable after cancellation.”
This is the expected subscription behavior, not a failed download. Renew the qualifying membership or purchase the game separately if it is available for your platform.
“My membership is active, but a catalog game no longer launches.”
Check whether the title has left the catalog and whether your account still has the required tier. If the game was removed, downloading it again will not restore the catalog entitlement; purchasing it is the independent-access option when offered.
“I bought DLC, but the add-on is unavailable.”
Verify that the base game is still accessible through your membership or a separate purchase. A catalog add-on can become unusable when the membership expires or the base title leaves the service. Renewing or buying the base game may restore the conditions described by PlayStation.
“I cancelled today and lost access immediately.”
PlayStation’s guidance says a cancellation normally leaves benefits active through the already-paid period. Check the account’s displayed end date, the account used to download the game and the local terms that apply to your purchase. Country-specific rules and storefront handling can differ.
Country, tier and date caveats
The official pages covering this subject are not all from the same market: the catalog FAQ and usage terms cited here are US pages, while the cancellation guidance is from PlayStation support in the UK. Plan names, catalog contents, departure dates, pricing, cancellation rules and available editions can vary by country.
For a current decision, check your local PlayStation Plus terms, the subscription tier shown on your account and the live catalog page for the exact game. Those pages are more reliable than a general statement that a title is “on PS Plus,” because the phrase may refer to a monthly offer in one region and a rotating catalog listing in another.
The direct answer for your situation
If you downloaded a PlayStation Plus game, assume that you have subscription access rather than permanent ownership. Monthly games require an active membership; catalog games additionally require the correct tier and continued availability. Cancelling preserves benefits until the paid period ends, but it does not convert downloads into purchases. For a game you must be able to play independently, obtain a compatible digital purchase or a physical edition when one is actually available.
