No. A hired or support Pawn in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a temporary companion that remains owned by another player. You can inspect it, issue commands, and equip it with compatible gear while it travels with you, but you cannot turn it into your permanent Pawn or apply your own appearance, voice, inclination, or progression choices.
Your persistent companion is the Main Pawn. The safest rule is simple: customize and invest in your Main Pawn; treat equipment placed on a hired Pawn as a gift that will be sent to its owner when the Pawn leaves.

What a hired Pawn is—and what it is not
The Pawn system divides companions into two roles. Your Main Pawn belongs to your character and persists with you. Support Pawns are borrowed from friends or other players and fill the remaining party slots temporarily. The official PlayStation description says the Main Pawn is fully customizable, while two additional Pawns can be hired through the game’s in-game options or from other players.

Main Pawn versus hired Pawn
| Capability | Your Main Pawn | Hired/support Pawn |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and persistence | Owned by you and retained as your permanent companion | Owned by another player and retained only for the duration of the hire |
| Appearance and voice | Can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis under the game’s conditions | No documented player option to apply your appearance or voice changes |
| Inclination | Can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis or the appropriate Rift Incense interaction | Remains the owner’s Pawn configuration |
| Vocation | Managed as part of your own Pawn’s development | You select a Pawn that already has the vocation you need; your hire does not give you ownership of its vocation setup |
| Equipment | You control its equipment as your own inventory allows | You may temporarily equip compatible items, but newly equipped gear is transferred to the owner when the Pawn leaves |
| Progression | Develops with your character as your Main Pawn | Progression and permanent changes remain under the owner’s control |
| Availability | Always associated with your character | Hired from friends or other players on the same platform; the system is not online co-op multiplayer |
Can you keep a hired Pawn permanently?
There is no supported way to convert a support Pawn into your Main Pawn or keep it as a permanent third companion. Dismissing the Pawn ends the hire. If you encounter the same player’s Pawn again later, that is a new hire rather than a continuation of the previous one.
The ownership boundary also explains why the game does not offer a transfer of a hired Pawn’s face, voice, inclination, or accumulated development to your roster. You can choose among available Pawns, but you cannot claim the underlying character.
What you can do while a support Pawn is in your party
Inspect and command it
You can review a hired Pawn before committing to the hire and issue the normal party commands during an adventure. These controls affect how the Pawn behaves in your current party; they do not rewrite the owner’s character.
Temporarily equip compatible gear
You can place weapons, armor, and other equipment on a hired Pawn when the item is compatible with that Pawn’s vocation and the game’s normal equipment rules. Compatibility still applies: a weapon or armor piece that your Pawn can use may be unusable by a hired Pawn with a different vocation.
Send a gift before dismissal
Capcom’s support-Pawn FAQ states that a gift can be sent before dismissal. This is a deliberate transfer to the other player, not a way to store your equipment on a temporary companion and reclaim it later.
Dismiss or allow the hire to end
You can dismiss the Pawn when you no longer need its role. A Pawn can also become forfeit in situations covered by the game’s Pawn rules. The departure event is when you must account for what is equipped and what is merely being carried.
Can you equip a hired Pawn without losing your armor?
Only if you remove your own equipment before the hired Pawn leaves. A current inventory guide reports that equipment newly equipped on a support Pawn is sent to that Pawn’s owner when the Pawn departs. In practical terms, putting your sword, helmet, armor, or other gear on a hired Pawn should be treated as giving it away.

Safe equipment procedure
- Check the item before equipping it. Confirm that it is not a unique, upgraded, sentimental, or otherwise irreplaceable piece you expect to keep.
- Confirm vocation compatibility. If the item cannot be used by the hired Pawn’s vocation, the game’s normal compatibility rules still prevent its use.
- Equip only what you are willing to transfer. A temporary stat improvement is not a free rental; newly equipped gear is destined for the owner when the Pawn leaves.
- Before dismissing, inspect the Pawn again. Remove any item you want back while the Pawn is still in your party. Do not rely on dismissal to return equipped gear.
- Dismiss the Pawn after your inventory is restored. If you intentionally want to reward the owner, leave the chosen equipment equipped or use the game’s gift option instead.
This rule concerns equipment placed on the support Pawn during your hire. It is separate from ordinary materials that the Pawn is carrying in its pack.
What happens to items in a hired Pawn’s pack?
Carried materials are handled differently from equipped weapons and armor. The cited inventory guidance reports that ordinary materials carried by a support Pawn return to your storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited. Capcom also states that items held by a Pawn that becomes forfeit are automatically sent to item storage.
That does not mean every item interaction is identical. Some Pawn specializations can move or sell low-rarity items, so review what a Pawn is carrying and what it is allowed to do before assuming an item will remain untouched. The important distinction is:
- Equipped gear you add: treated as a transfer to the owner when the support Pawn leaves.
- Ordinary materials carried in the pack: reported to return to your storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited.
- Items affected by Pawn specializations: may be moved or sold when the specialization permits it, particularly for low-rarity items.
If an item matters, do not use a hired Pawn as a long-term storage solution. Keep valuable gear in your own inventory or storage, and remove anything equipped on the support Pawn before ending the hire.

Can you change a rented Pawn’s appearance, voice, or inclination?
Appearance and voice
The Art of Metamorphosis can change the appearance and voice of your Main Pawn under the game’s conditions. The available official descriptions do not provide a corresponding method for applying those changes to a hired Pawn. A support Pawn’s look and voice are part of the other player’s character.
Inclination
Your Main Pawn’s inclination can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis or through the appropriate Rift Incense interaction. Those tools are part of managing your own Pawn. They are not documented as controls for rewriting a hired Pawn’s inclination.
Vocation
You should hire a Pawn that already has the vocation and role you need. The game’s documented support-Pawn functions let you select, inspect, command, equip, gift, and dismiss the Pawn; they do not describe a player-controlled vocation switch for a rented companion. If your party needs a different role, replace the hire rather than planning to retrain it.

Permanent progression
A hired Pawn’s permanent development remains with its owner. You can improve your party’s immediate equipment situation, but you cannot apply your Main Pawn’s progression tools or permanently level, respec, or otherwise develop another player’s Pawn through your save.
How hiring works across friends, players, and platforms
Capcom says you can hire Pawns serving friends or other players around the world as support Pawns. Hiring is restricted to users playing on the same platform. A friend’s Pawn on a different platform therefore cannot be hired through this system, even if both players are connected elsewhere.
This is an asynchronous companion system, not online co-op multiplayer. The other player does not join your world as a controllable character. You travel with that player’s Pawn data, then dismiss it or let the hire end when you are finished.
Common situations and the correct decision
“I found a perfect-looking Pawn. Can I make it mine?”
No. Hire it for the current adventure, but the Pawn remains the creator’s character. If you want a permanent companion with that appearance, use your own Main Pawn and customize it with the tools available to you.
“My hired Pawn needs better armor for this fight.”
You can equip compatible armor, but count the item as a gift unless you remove it before dismissal. Use inexpensive or replaceable gear when a short-term upgrade is worth the transfer.

Check whether the sword was equipped on the support Pawn when it left. Newly equipped support-Pawn gear is sent to the owner, so it is not handled like ordinary materials returned to storage.
“A material disappeared from the Pawn’s inventory.”
Check your storage and consider the Pawn’s specialization. Materials may be returned to storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited, while some specializations can move or sell low-rarity items.
“I want a healer, but the Pawn I hired has the wrong vocation.”
Dismiss it and hire a Pawn already configured for the role. Your controls over a support Pawn do not include a documented permanent vocation change.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before every dismissal
- Remove every weapon, armor piece, or other equipment you want to retain.
- Check your own inventory and storage for the returned materials after dismissal or forfeiture.
- Decide whether any remaining equipped item is an intentional gift.
- Remember that appearance, voice, inclination, vocation setup, and progression belong to the other player.
- If the Pawn no longer fits your party, hire a replacement with the vocation and abilities you need.
