Yes—if you complete the claim before the promotion ends, the game remains in your Epic Games Store library permanently. You do not have to download or install it during the giveaway. The important qualification is legal: Epic treats the claim as a continuing, account-bound digital license, not ownership of the game’s copyright or a transferable copy. A missed deadline, trial, beta, press build, account problem or shutdown of required online services can produce a different result.

What “keep forever” means on Epic Games Store

Epic’s store FAQ says that a claimed free game remains in your library to play even after it is no longer available to new customers for free. The same FAQ describes the claim as purchasing a digital license. Epic’s weekly-free-game support guidance uses the practical wording that, once claimed, the game is yours permanently—even if you do not download it right away.

In practical terms, a successful claim creates an entitlement attached to your Epic account. The weekly promotion can end, the game can stop being offered to new users, and you can uninstall the game later without losing that library entry. You normally return to the launcher or Epic Games Store library and download it when you are ready.

“Forever” does not mean an unconditional property right. Epic’s EULA says software is “licensed, not sold.” It grants a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non-sublicensable limited license. Epic and the game’s licensors retain title and intellectual-property rights. You cannot resell the license, transfer it to another Epic account or treat the underlying code as your own property.

Claimed versus unclaimed: the deadline is the dividing line

Epic support states that free promotions have a limited duration and that you must claim the game within the indicated period to add it to your library. Epic’s weekly rotation is described as a seven-day availability window. When that window closes, the offer expires for people who never completed the claim.

Situation Library result What you should do
You clicked the free-game offer, completed checkout or claim, and received confirmation before the deadline Permanent library entitlement under the license terms Keep using the same Epic account; download whenever you want
You saw the offer but never completed the claim No entitlement is created; the promotion can expire after its stated window There is generally no retroactive claim once the offer has ended
You started the process but the transaction failed or was abandoned Do not assume the game was added Check the library and transaction history for a completed claim
You claimed it but never downloaded it The claim remains in the library Install later from your library

Do not confuse the end of a promotion with expiration of a completed claim. The promotion’s timer controls whether new users can add the game; it does not normally delete a game that Epic already recorded as claimed.

How to claim a free game correctly

  1. Open the current free-game listing. Check the countdown or end date shown on the offer page. Epic’s support material describes the standard rotation as seven days, but rely on the deadline displayed for that specific promotion.
  2. Sign in to the intended Epic account. Verify the account email and any linked identity before proceeding. Separate accounts created through Google, console sign-in or another login can have different libraries.
  3. Select the game and choose the free claim button. Continue through checkout even when the price is zero. A page view or an “add to cart” action alone is not proof that the entitlement was recorded.
  4. Complete the order and wait for confirmation. Look for the completed order or an “in library” confirmation. If the page errors, do not assume success; check your library and account transactions.
  5. Install now or later. Installation is optional. Leaving the game undownloaded does not cancel a completed claim.

Claiming before the displayed deadline is the only reliable way to preserve the offer. Epic’s support guidance does not promise retroactive access for users who missed the window.

License, ownership and account limits

The license is personal and account-bound

Under Epic’s EULA, each software addition is a transaction that grants a limited license for personal use. The license is not a sale of the software itself. It is tied to the account that completed the transaction and is not transferable or sublicensable.

Visa Physical Gift Card $100 (plus $5.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

What you do not receive

  • Copyright or other intellectual-property title in the game.
  • A right to resell, gift or move the entitlement to another Epic account.
  • A guarantee that every feature will remain available indefinitely.
  • A promise that the game will work offline or on future hardware and operating systems.

Why the distinction matters

If Epic terminates an account for a rules violation, imposes a platform restriction, changes a technical service or shuts down a required service, access or functionality can be affected under the applicable terms. These are different from a normal giveaway ending: a completed promotion claim is not ordinarily removed simply because the public offer rotated out.

Delisting: can a claimed game disappear from the store?

Epic’s delisting guidance distinguishes store availability from existing library access. When a game is delisted, it can no longer be purchased by new customers, but a game you already own or claimed remains accessible in your library.

That does not guarantee permanent playability. Some titles depend on authentication servers, matchmaking, cloud services or other online infrastructure controlled by the publisher or a third party. If those services are discontinued, the game may launch with reduced features or may no longer be playable, even though its library entitlement remains visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question Likely outcome for a completed claim
Can a new customer still buy the delisted game? No; delisting removes it from new sales
Does delisting normally erase your library entry? No; Epic says already owned or claimed games remain accessible in the library
Can you still download it? Often, if Epic and the publisher continue to provide the files; availability is not an unconditional promise
Will online multiplayer continue forever? No guarantee; service shutdowns can make online-dependent features unusable

Trials, betas and press builds are different

Not every free download is a standard giveaway. Epic’s library guidance identifies limited-time versions such as betas and press builds as exceptions that do not grant permanent access. A trial can expire by design, and a test build can be removed when its testing period ends.

  • Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
  • GameStop. Power to the Players.
  • Redemption: Instore and Online
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.

Before assuming that a free item is permanent, check the offer wording. A normal store promotion identifies a game as the weekly free title and creates a completed library transaction. Labels such as “trial,” “demo,” “beta,” “early test” or “press build” indicate a different access model. The end of a trial is therefore not evidence that Epic revoked a normal claimed promotion.

What if you claimed the game but never downloaded it?

Nothing special happens to the entitlement. Epic expressly says a claimed weekly free game remains permanent even when you do not download it immediately. You can wait for disk space, a faster connection or a compatible computer, then install from the library later.

Not downloading does mean you have not verified that the game will run on your machine. Check the title’s operating-system, hardware and platform requirements before installing. A claim preserves the license; it does not remove compatibility requirements.

If a claimed game is missing from your library

A missing listing is more often an account, filter, platform or transaction issue than an expired giveaway. Work through these checks in order:

Fortnite Physical Gift Card | Powered by the Epic Games Store - $50
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  1. Confirm the Epic account. Sign out and back in with the email used for the claim. Check whether you accidentally entered through a separate Google, console-linked or other identity account.
  2. Reset library filters. Clear filters for installed status, genre, platform, hidden items or search terms. A filter can hide a game without changing ownership.
  3. Refresh the library. Restart the Epic Games Launcher or reload the store and allow the account data to synchronize.
  4. Check platform compatibility. Some titles are available only for particular operating systems or devices. An incompatible platform can prevent installation options from appearing.
  5. Review transactions. Confirm that the free order completed. A failed payment or interrupted checkout can leave no entitlement even when you opened the offer page.
  6. Check for a refund. Epic says a refunded game is removed from the library. This explains why a previously visible paid title can disappear.
  7. Consider limited-time builds or code revocation. Epic lists betas, press builds and fraudulent-code revocation among reasons access may not remain available.
  8. Contact Epic Player Support with evidence. Provide the account email, order information and the title’s name rather than assuming the weekly promotion expired.

Can you refund an Epic Games Store game?

Refunds apply to eligible paid purchases made through Epic checkout; a normally claimed free promotion is not a paid transaction that you can refund. If you bought the game separately, Epic’s policy generally allows a refund for PC and Mac products marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” when the request is made within 14 days and the game has less than two hours of runtime.

Purchase or product type General policy described by Epic How to start
PC/Mac product marked refundable or self-refundable Generally eligible within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of runtime Use the account Transactions page for self-refundable purchases; use Player Support for other refundable purchases
Subscription Generally excluded unless an applicable law requires otherwise Review the applicable terms and contact support if a legal exception may apply
In-app purchase, consumable digital item or virtual currency Generally excluded unless an applicable law requires otherwise Check the transaction terms before contacting support
Product marked non-refundable Generally excluded unless an applicable law requires otherwise Check whether local law creates an exception
Game claimed at no charge during a promotion No ordinary paid transaction to reverse Use library and account troubleshooting instead

Epic’s stated policy covers purchases made through its checkout on PC, Mac and mobile, but the 14-day and under-two-hour conditions cited above are the general PC/Mac rule for products marked refundable or self-refundable. Eligibility can depend on the product label, transaction route and applicable consumer law.

When Epic processes a refund, the game is removed from the library. That removal is different from a delisting: a delisted game you still own remains in the library, while a refunded purchase no longer represents an active entitlement.

Free claim, delisting and refund: the distinctions at a glance

Comparison What changes What remains true
Claimed promotion versus unclaimed promotion The offer ends for users who did not claim it A completed claim remains in the account library
Standard promotion versus trial, beta or press build Limited-time versions can expire A standard completed promotion is intended to be permanent under the license
Library availability versus playability Online-service shutdowns can disable features or access Delisting alone does not normally remove a claimed library entry
Free claim versus paid purchase Paid purchases may qualify for a refund; a free claim is not refunded Both are governed by account and platform terms
License versus ownership You receive permission to use the software, not title to it Epic and its licensors retain intellectual-property rights

A practical checklist for every weekly giveaway

  • Open the offer while its countdown is active.
  • Verify the correct Epic account before claiming.
  • Complete the zero-price checkout, not just the product-page visit.
  • Confirm the game appears in the library or in account transactions.
  • Save the confirmation email or order record if the title is important to you.
  • Install immediately only if you want to test compatibility; installation is not required to preserve the claim.
  • Read the product label for trial, beta or press-build language.
  • Remember that permanent library access does not guarantee online services, compatibility or offline play forever.

Frequently asked questions

Does uninstalling a claimed free game remove it from my account?

No. Uninstalling removes local files, not the account entitlement. Reinstall it from the Epic library while the account and service remain eligible.

Can I move a claimed game to another Epic account?

No. Epic’s license is personal and non-transferable. The entitlement stays with the account that completed the claim.

Is a game still “free” after the weekly offer ends?

It is no longer free for someone who never claimed it. For someone who completed the claim during the offer, the library license remains available without a later purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What proof should I keep that I claimed a free game?

Keep the Epic order confirmation or transaction record and verify that the title appears in your library. Those records help support distinguish a completed claim from an interrupted checkout or a different account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a permanent library entry guarantee I can play the game offline?

No. The entitlement can remain while the game still depends on authentication, servers or other online services. A service shutdown can make an online-dependent title partly or wholly unplayable.

The Bottom Line

Claim the game before Epic’s stated deadline and verify the completed transaction. The library entitlement is intended to remain permanently, even without an immediate download, but it is a personal digital license—not ownership—and continued play can still depend on your account, platform compatibility and online services.
