Yes—if your project and development tools are on your computer. A local desktop editor can keep working through an outage; a browser editor may let you edit local files, but its offline behavior is not guaranteed for every session or browser. A cloud environment such as GitHub Codespaces needs an internet connection to reach the remote machine.

Which parts of your coding setup work offline?

The key difference is where the project files and computing power live. Editing a file already stored on your computer does not require access to a remote machine. Opening a remote repository or connecting to a cloud development environment does.

Setup Where files or compute live What to expect without a network Save and recovery behavior
Local desktop editor and local project On your computer You can edit local files. Running, building, and debugging depend on the tools and dependencies already available locally. Save to local files; a local Git commit can preserve a checkpoint. Pushing to a remote repository must wait for connectivity.
VS Code for the Web editing local files Files are local; the editor runs in a browser VS Code for the Web supports local-file editing, but some capabilities available in desktop or remote environments are not available in the browser. The documentation does not guarantee continued operation through every kind of outage. Local-file changes save automatically when Auto Save is enabled; manual saving is also available. Microsoft’s VS Code for the Web documentation describes these behaviors and limitations.
VS Code for the Web editing a remote repository Remote repository; pending edits are held in browser storage Access to the remote repository depends on connectivity. Do not assume browser storage makes the work a committed or backed-up copy. Changes remain in browser local storage until committed. Commit and push when you can; local browser storage is not a remote commit. Microsoft’s documentation explains the browser workflow.
GitHub Codespaces Remote cloud development environment GitHub states that Codespaces requires internet access, so a dropped connection prevents access to the cloud machine. GitHub says uncommitted changes are saved when connectivity is lost and that you can reconnect to the same state later. The company advises committing and pushing often when the connection is unstable. See GitHub’s codespace lifecycle documentation.

Can you code offline in a browser editor?

Sometimes, for a limited task: VS Code for the Web can open and edit local files. That does not make the browser editor a dependable offline replacement for a desktop development setup. Browser support and available features vary: Microsoft lists current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari as supported browsers, but local folder access through the File System Access API is available in Edge and Chrome. If that API is unavailable, you can open files but not folders.

Even when a browser editor is already open, the documentation does not promise that every feature or session will continue through an outage. Running code, building, debugging, terminal access, and extensions may be limited compared with desktop or remote environments. For an outage you need to plan around, keep a local project and the required tools on the computer rather than relying on a remote repository or cloud workspace.

What happens to changes when the connection drops?

Local files in VS Code for the Web

For files opened locally, Auto Save can save changes automatically; you can also save manually. Check the file itself after editing rather than assuming a keystroke has been written to disk.

Remote repository edits in the browser

When you edit a remote repository through VS Code for the Web, pending changes are held in browser local storage until you commit them. That storage is not the same as a Git commit, a push to the remote repository, or a durable backup. If the edits matter, commit them when the connection and workflow permit, then push when online.

GitHub Codespaces

GitHub’s documentation states: “GitHub Codespaces is a cloud-based development environment and requires an internet connection.” If the connection disappears, you cannot reach the codespace while offline. GitHub says uncommitted changes are saved and you can reconnect to the same state when service returns. Its advice for unstable connections is to commit and push often.

How to prepare for planned offline coding

For work that must continue during travel or an outage, prepare the local setup while you are online. GitHub specifically recommends using devcontainer.json with the Dev Containers extension to build and attach to a local development container if you frequently work offline.

  1. Open the project while connected. Confirm that the repository is present on the computer and that you can open the intended files locally.
  2. Set up the local development environment. Install or build the tools and dependencies your project needs, including a local development container if that matches your workflow. A container configuration alone does not establish that every dependency is available offline.
  3. Check the tasks you need to perform. While still connected, verify locally that the project can run, build, or test as needed. This is a practical preparation step; the official documentation does not provide project-specific offline verification instructions.
  4. Save and make a local checkpoint. Save changes and commit a known-good state before disconnecting. A local commit is useful without a network; pushing it to a remote repository requires connectivity.
  5. Keep a local editor available. If your usual workflow is browser-based or cloud-hosted, have a desktop editor and local project ready for the work that cannot wait for a connection.

Choose the setup that matches the outage

  • Only need to read or make small edits? A browser editor may be enough if the files are local and the browser supports the access you need, but do not depend on undocumented outage continuity.
  • Need to run, build, debug, or test code? Use a local editor and prepare the runtime, dependencies, and other project tools on the machine before going offline.
  • Need your cloud workspace? Plan to reconnect; Codespaces requires internet access. Its saved state helps you resume after connectivity returns, not work on the remote machine while disconnected.
  • Work offline regularly? Consider a locally built development container, as GitHub recommends, and make local commits as checkpoints.
