Sometimes—but “free” offers do not all work the same way. A game you successfully claim during a limited Epic Games Store giveaway stays in your Epic library after the promotion ends. That is an ongoing digital license, not ownership of the software. A PlayStation Plus monthly game is different: you can use it only while your membership is active, and catalog games can leave the service.
The decisive questions are what kind of offer you used, whether you completed the claim before the deadline, and whether access is tied to a subscription.

These rules are platform-specific. They should not be generalized to every store, launcher, console subscription or promotional code.
What “claiming” a free game actually means
A limited giveaway normally has two separate events: the publisher makes a title free for a period, and you add a license for that title to your account. Downloading is optional. If the account transaction is completed before the displayed deadline, the entitlement is recorded even when the game is not installed.

Simply seeing the game on a “free” page, opening its store listing, or downloading a trial does not necessarily complete the claim. The safe test is whether the title appears in your account’s library or purchase history after the checkout or redemption flow finishes.
Epic Games Store: claimed giveaways stay in the library
Claim it before the countdown expires
Epic’s support guidance says a limited-duration promotion must be claimed during the period shown on the offer. Once that period ends, new customers must pay the normal price or wait for another promotion. Missing the deadline does not create a retroactive entitlement; Epic’s support advice is to watch for a later giveaway.
Epic currently describes a new weekly free game as arriving Thursday at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time and remaining available for seven days. That is current support guidance, not a guarantee that every future promotion will use the same day, time or duration. Use the deadline displayed on the specific offer, and account for your local time zone.

Epic’s FAQ states that a claimed free game remains in your library after it is no longer available free to new customers. The title can remain there even if you have not downloaded it yet. You can install it later from the library, subject to the normal requirements of your operating system, account and the game itself.
“Remains in your library” is the precise promise. It does not mean that Epic has transferred ownership of the underlying software to you. The Epic Games Store EULA describes a no-cost store transaction as granting a personal, limited license and says the software is licensed, not sold. The license and applicable law govern the rights you receive.

How to make sure the claim was recorded
- Sign in to the Epic account you intend to use permanently.
- Open the current free-game promotion before its displayed end time.
- Complete the store’s claim or checkout process, even if the listed price is zero.
- Open your Library and confirm that the title is listed there.
- Keep the account credentials and any required two-factor authentication method secure; the entitlement is tied to that account.
If the title appears in the library, installation can wait. You do not need to keep the game installed for the license to remain recorded.
If a claimed Epic game is missing
Start with account identity rather than reinstalling the launcher. Epic advises checking whether you used multiple Epic accounts, or whether you signed in through a different console-linked account. Sign out and test each account that might have been used for the original claim. A game claimed on one account does not automatically appear on another account merely because both are used on the same computer or console.
Also check that you are viewing the correct library and that the launcher is online. If you never completed the claim before the deadline, the game will not be added simply because you remember opening its page. In that case, the practical remedy is to wait for a future promotion or purchase it.
PlayStation Plus: monthly games are membership benefits
Monthly games while your membership is active
PlayStation’s product guidance answers the question “Are PlayStation Plus games mine to keep?” with “Yes, for as long as you remain an active member.” In practical terms, a monthly game you redeemed while subscribed is available for use while the membership remains active, provided the account and service can validate that entitlement.
This is different from an Epic giveaway because the entitlement is conditional. The game is not converted into unrestricted access when you add it to your account. If the membership lapses, the monthly game can be locked even if it is still installed on the console.

What happens when you cancel
PlayStation’s cancellation support says that games downloaded at no cost as monthly games are no longer available once the membership ends. You may see the icon or the installed files, but starting the game requires an active qualifying membership again. Renewing the membership restores the benefit for titles that are still supported under the account’s entitlement.

A discounted purchase is a purchase; a no-cost monthly game is a subscription benefit.
Catalog games are a separate benefit
Extra and Premium/Deluxe plans provide access to rotating Game Catalog and Classics Catalog selections. Catalog access depends on the plan tier and region, and PlayStation can announce a date when a particular title leaves the service. When that date arrives, the game can become unavailable even if your membership is still active.
Do not confuse adding a catalog title to your library with owning it. Catalog access is comparable to borrowing from a changing collection: your membership may continue, but the publisher or platform can remove an individual game. The exact catalog, tiers and end dates vary by region, so check the listing for your country and plan.

What “forever” can and cannot promise
In everyday usage, “keep forever” means you can return to a claimed giveaway later without paying again. That is a useful description of the Epic promotion rule, but it is not a blanket legal guarantee that the software will be accessible under every future circumstance.

Three limits matter:
- The account matters. Losing access to the account, using the wrong sign-in, or violating account terms can prevent access to its library.
- The license controls use. Epic’s EULA grants permission to use the software under stated conditions; it does not transfer ownership of the code or grant unlimited rights to copy, resell or redistribute it.
- Services can change. Platform operations, authentication, compatibility and applicable law can affect how a license is delivered. “Permanent in the library” should not be rewritten as an unconditional promise that every future device or service will run the game.
For PlayStation Plus, “forever” is even less accurate: the monthly-game benefit is explicitly tied to an active membership, while catalog games can also rotate out.
A practical checklist before you rely on a free game
- Identify the offer as a storefront giveaway, a monthly subscription game or a rotating catalog title.
- Check the exact end date and time shown for your region.
- Finish the claim or redemption flow while signed in to the correct account.
- Verify the title in the account library rather than relying on a download notification.
- For Epic, record that the game appears in the library before the promotion closes.
- For PlayStation Plus, note that cancelling the membership removes access to no-cost monthly games after the paid period ends.
- For catalog titles, check whether an announced removal date exists and which plan tier is required.
- Keep account recovery details current; an entitlement cannot help if you cannot sign in.
Common mistakes and the quickest fix
“I downloaded it, so I must own it.”
A download proves that files were installed, not that the account has an unrestricted ownership right. Check the offer type and the account entitlement.
“The promotion ended, so my Epic game disappeared.”
A successful Epic claim should remain in the library after the promotion. Check alternate Epic or linked-console accounts first, then confirm that the claim actually completed.
“The PlayStation game is installed, but it is locked.”
That behavior is consistent with a monthly game after membership expiry. Renew an eligible membership or use a separately purchased copy if available.

Catalog additions do not freeze a title in place. Review the catalog’s announced end dates and your plan tier.
Bottom line
A claimed Epic Games Store giveaway is designed to remain in your library after the free period, even if you have not downloaded it. Treat that as continued access under a personal software license, not ownership of the game. PlayStation Plus monthly games remain usable only while your membership is active, and catalog games can leave the service. Before claiming anything, identify which model you are using and complete the account transaction before its deadline.
