Yes. WhatsApp’s guest-calling feature, announced on October 14, 2026, allows an invited guest to join a voice or video call from a computer browser without downloading WhatsApp, creating a WhatsApp account, or having a phone number. The person who creates the call link must have a WhatsApp account and may need to approve the guest before they enter.
What changed with WhatsApp guest calling
Traditionally, joining a WhatsApp call meant using the app or a supported WhatsApp calling interface while signed in to an account. Guest calling creates a separate path for invitees: the host generates a call link, and the invitee opens that link in a computer browser.
The guest identifies themselves by typing a name. They do not register a WhatsApp account, verify a phone number, or download the WhatsApp application. This arrangement applies to the invitee, not to the person organizing the call.

WhatsApp’s ordinary account-registration rules still require a primary phone number. Guest calling does not remove that requirement for account holders; it simply means an invited participant can join without becoming an account holder.

How the host creates an invite
- Open the Calls tab. The host starts in WhatsApp’s calling area.
- Select “New call link.” In the newer guest-calling flow, the host may instead use the plus icon to begin creating the link.
- Choose voice or video. The link is prepared for the type of call the host selects.
- Send the link outside WhatsApp when necessary. The host can copy or share it through another channel so a person who does not use WhatsApp can receive it.
Only a person with a WhatsApp account can perform this setup. A guest cannot generate a link for their own meeting or turn a received link into a new host invitation.
How to join without downloading WhatsApp
- Open the invitation on a computer. Use a supported computer web browser and open the call URL supplied by the host.
- Enter a name. The guest types the name that will identify them in the call. This is not account registration and does not require a phone-number check.
- Allow browser permissions. If the browser asks, permit access to the computer’s microphone and camera for voice or video participation.
- Wait for admission if prompted. When the host has approval enabled, the link takes the guest to a waiting room.
- Join after the host admits you. The call begins once the host lets the waiting guest in.
The documented guest flow is specifically through a computer browser. It does not establish that opening the link in a mobile browser provides the same experience, so use a computer when relying on guest calling.
Waiting rooms and host control
Approval is a deliberate part of the guest flow. A person who opens the link may remain in a waiting room until the host admits them. This gives the host an opportunity to recognize invitees and prevent an unexpected visitor from entering.
The host can remove a guest at any time. If someone is removed, the host—not the guest—controls whether that person can participate again. Send links privately and tell invitees which name to use so the waiting-room list is easy to identify.

The 32-person figure is WhatsApp’s stated limit for one-to-one and group guest calls. It is not a promise that every browser, camera, microphone, or network can deliver the same quality under all conditions.
What a guest cannot do
- See the phone numbers of other participants.
- Send WhatsApp messages to participants from the guest call.
- Add people directly to the call.
- Create a call link or become the host without a WhatsApp account.
Guest calling is therefore a way to participate in a specific call, not a limited version of a WhatsApp account. Messaging, contact management, and inviting additional people remain outside the guest role.
Privacy and link safety
WhatsApp says each call link is different and secure, but possession of a link may be enough for someone to attempt to join. Treat the URL like an invitation credential: send it only to people you trust, avoid posting it in a public channel, and use host approval when the call is not meant to be open to anyone who receives the address.
Unused links expire after 30 days, according to the WhatsApp Help Center. WhatsApp may also revoke a link for privacy or security reasons. Expiration concerns an unused link; it should not be interpreted as a 30-day limit on the length of a call that has already been joined.

End-to-end encryption protects the call’s communications as described by WhatsApp, while the waiting room and removal controls address who is allowed into the conversation. Those are separate protections: encryption does not make a widely shared link private.
Phone number questions answered precisely
Can I join if I have no phone number?
Yes, as a guest. You open the host’s link in a computer browser and enter a name. You do not supply a phone number to WhatsApp for that participation.
Does the host need my phone number?
No phone number is required for the guest flow. The host needs their own WhatsApp account, but the guest does not have to be saved as a WhatsApp contact or registered with a number.

Yes. The guest link can be created for video, and an invitee without a WhatsApp account can join from a computer browser after any required host approval.

Can a guest invite someone else?
No. Guests cannot add people directly. Ask the account-holding host to create or distribute invitations instead.

The link opens but there is no join option
Confirm that you opened it in a computer browser rather than relying on an unsupported or restricted mobile-browser path. Ask the host to verify that the link is current and that the call has not been canceled.
You are stuck in the waiting room
Waiting is expected when host approval is enabled. Contact the host through the channel used to send the invitation and ask them to admit you. The guest cannot bypass the waiting room.
The link is expired
Unused links expire after 30 days. Request a new link from the host, who can create one from the Calls tab using “New call link” or the plus icon in the guest-calling flow.

The microphone or camera does not work
Check the browser’s site permissions for the microphone and camera, make sure another application is not exclusively using the device, and rejoin after changing the permission. A voice call can still be used when video hardware is unavailable if the host created a voice call.
You expected to send a message or add a participant
Those actions are not available to guests. Use the call only for participation and contact the host when another person needs to be invited.
When this feature is the right fit
- Someone needs to join once without creating a messaging account.
- An organization wants invitees to use a computer browser instead of installing an app.
- The host needs a call with up to 32 participants and wants admission control.
- Participants need screen sharing, hand raising, or simple reactions without exchanging phone numbers.
It is less suitable when every participant must be able to create invitations, message one another, or manage contacts independently. Those functions require the normal WhatsApp account experience rather than guest access.

WhatsApp guest calling answers the common “no app, no account, no number” question with a qualified yes: the host must be an account holder, the guest must use a computer browser and an invite link, and the host may have to approve entry. Once admitted, the guest can join an encrypted, free voice or video call with up to 32 people, without a WhatsApp download or phone-number registration.
