You can’t install Samsung DeX on a non-Samsung phone. DeX is Samsung’s implementation of Android desktop features, with Samsung-developed features integrated with its hardware—not a cross-brand app. If you want a desktop experience on another phone, check whether that exact model supports Android’s connected-display features or its manufacturer’s desktop mode.
Why Samsung DeX won’t install on another phone
Samsung describes DeX as an Android multi-window experience enhanced with Samsung software and hardware integration. Its documentation covers supported Galaxy devices; it does not offer DeX as an app for other manufacturers’ phones. What to use instead
Android connected displays and desktop windowing
Some supported Android phones can connect to an external display and offer desktop windowing, while other setups mirror the phone screen. The available behavior depends on the device and its software. Google notes that these features are not available on every device, so check your phone maker’s support information for your exact model before planning a setup. Google’s Android connected-display and desktop-windowing guide explains the general feature, but does not establish that every phone supports it.

Motorola documents a Mobile desktop experience through Smart Connect, along with ways to share a phone with a PC. The cited instructions do not specify a compatible-model list, so confirm support for your exact phone with Motorola before relying on the feature. Its Smart Connect instructions describe the available experience.

How to check whether your phone can use a monitor
- Look up the exact model. Search the phone manufacturer’s support pages for external-display, video-output, desktop-mode, or desktop-windowing support. Don’t assume a USB-C port can send video.
- Confirm the display behavior. Check whether the phone mirrors its screen or starts a separate desktop session. If you need multiple resizable apps, confirm that the model’s desktop mode supports them.
- Check your connection options. For a wired setup, verify video output before buying a USB-C to HDMI adapter. For wireless display, confirm that both the phone and display support a compatible connection method.
- Test the apps and controls you need. Keyboard and mouse support, app resizing, and app compatibility can vary by phone and desktop mode. An app may not work well in a desktop window even when the mode itself is available.
Samsung’s documentation describes HDMI adapters and peripherals for supported Galaxy devices; that does not establish that a non-Samsung phone supports the same accessories. Google likewise cautions that connected-display features vary by supported device.

Choosing the right alternative
- Want Samsung DeX specifically? You need a supported Samsung Galaxy device; another phone’s desktop mode is an alternative, not DeX.
- Want a larger view of your phone? Screen mirroring may be enough, if your phone supports connecting to an external display.
- Want a desktop-style workspace? Look for desktop windowing or a manufacturer-specific mode on your model, then confirm how it handles separate windows, input devices, and your apps.
- Own a Motorola phone? Check Smart Connect’s Mobile desktop experience and verify your model’s compatibility with Motorola.
