Sometimes—but only if the specific SATA port, connector or drive bay, firmware, and operating system support hot plugging. SATA or AHCI alone does not make every drive safe to unplug while the computer is running. If your computer’s documentation does not confirm support for that exact connection, shut down before disconnecting it.

What makes a SATA drive safe to remove while the computer is on?

Hot removal depends on the whole connection, not just the drive’s SATA interface. Microsoft’s documentation describes hot-plug capability as a property declared for a port and its connector arrangement; it notes that the relevant indicator applies to blind-mate connectors designed to support hot plugging. The operating system and storage driver must also handle removal appropriately.

Check the computer or motherboard manual for the exact port, any firmware setting, and whether the system requires a drive bay or backplane. A hot-swap SATA bay or caddy is not a universal fix: it must fit the computer and be paired with a host connection that supports hot plugging.

Does AHCI mean every SATA port is hot-swappable?

No. AHCI is related to SATA hot-plugging, but it does not certify that every port, connector, or system configuration supports live removal. A firmware option or a drive appearing in Windows does not, by itself, establish that the physical connection is safe to unplug. Confirm support for the specific port and any required bay in the system documentation.

How to reduce the risk before removing a supported drive

  1. Confirm the exact connection. Check the computer or motherboard manual for the SATA port’s hot-plug support, required firmware configuration, and any required bay or backplane.
  2. Stop activity on the drive. Close files and applications using it, stop services that depend on it, and wait until disk activity has ceased.
  3. Use safe removal if Windows offers it. Follow the available safe-removal process so pending cached operations can finish. Microsoft warns that disconnecting external storage without safe removal can risk data loss; its guidance covers external storage, so it should not be treated as a universal eject procedure for every internal SATA setup.
  4. Disconnect only after the preceding checks. If the system documentation does not explicitly support hot plugging, shut down the computer first.

Why can unplugging a drive cause data loss?

Writes may still be in progress or held in a cache when a drive is disconnected. Windows’ removal policy affects how storage writes are handled: under Better performance, writes can be cached, so safe removal is needed to allow pending operations to finish. Microsoft states, “If you remove or disconnect the device without following the safe removal instructions, you risk losing data.” That warning is specifically from its guidance on Windows removal policies for external storage.

Microsoft’s storage-driver documentation also shows that hot-plug configuration affects device-removal policy and caching: configuring a device as hot-plug sets an expected-surprise-removal policy and disables caching, while orderly removal may allow selective caching. This is why both hardware capability and software handling matter.

Which drive should never be unplugged while the computer is running?

Do not disconnect the drive that contains the running operating system. The computer depends on it while operating. For any other drive, if hot-plug support for the exact port and setup is unclear, power the computer down before disconnecting it.
