Yes. A single VPS can run WordPress alongside static sites, Node.js, Python, Go, or other applications. Point each domain’s DNS records to the VPS, then use Nginx server blocks or Apache virtual hosts to send each hostname to its own directory, PHP-FPM pool, or application process. The sites share the VPS’s CPU, memory, storage, database capacity, and network connection, so the design works best when you size and monitor the combined workload.
How multiple sites share one VPS
A VPS gives you a virtual machine with its own operating-system environment, but it is still one machine. The normal layout is a single web server at the public edge and a separate site definition for every domain.

Each domain gets an A record for the VPS IPv4 address and, when enabled, an AAAA record for its IPv6 address.
- The edge server identifies the site. Nginx matches the HTTP Host header to a server block; Apache matches it to a virtual host.
- The site definition chooses the backend. A WordPress domain points to a document root containing WordPress and PHP handling. A static site is served directly. A Node.js, Python, Go, or similar application is forwarded to a local process through an Nginx upstream or
proxy_pass. - TLS and policy are applied per site. HTTPS certificates, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, upload limits, caching rules, and security headers belong in each domain’s configuration.
Nginx supports multiple virtual servers in its HTTP context, so adding domains does not require a separate VPS. Apache provides the equivalent arrangement with name-based virtual hosts.
What WordPress needs compared with other stacks
WordPress
WordPress runs from its own directory and requires PHP plus a MySQL-compatible database. WordPress documentation identifies Apache and Nginx as the most robust and featureful choices, although any web server that supports the required PHP and database versions can run it.

Keep WordPress core, themes, plugins, PHP, and the database server on supported versions. WordPress warns that PHP versions beyond their official end of life can expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Schedule updates rather than allowing one site’s maintenance to disrupt every other application.
Static sites
A static site needs only a document root and the web server. Its server block can return HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and other files without a language runtime or application process.
Node.js, Python, Go, and other applications
These applications normally listen on localhost or another private interface. Nginx accepts the public request, terminates TLS, and proxies the request to the application’s local port. The application should have its own deployment directory, service account, logs, environment variables, and restart policy.
Point different domains to different applications
The following sequence works for an independent WordPress site and a separate application on the same VPS.
- Create DNS records. For every domain or subdomain, create an A record pointing to the VPS IPv4 address. Add an AAAA record only when the VPS and your firewall are configured for IPv6. Allow DNS propagation before diagnosing web-server behavior.
- Create separate filesystem locations. Give the WordPress site one document root, such as a dedicated directory under your chosen web root. Give the non-WordPress application a separate deployment directory; do not place its source tree inside the WordPress directory.
- Create identities and permissions. Use distinct Unix users and groups where practical. The web server should have only the access each site needs, and application secrets should not be readable by unrelated site processes.
- Define one virtual host or server block per hostname. Set the matching domain names, the site’s document root, index behavior, access and error logs, and any upload or request-size limits. A WordPress block also needs explicit PHP handling.
- Attach the correct backend. Configure PHP requests for the WordPress site to a PHP-FPM socket or pool. Configure the application site with an upstream or reverse-proxy destination that matches its listening address and port. Serve static content directly when no backend is required.
- Enable HTTPS separately for each domain. Install a certificate covering the exact hostname, redirect HTTP to HTTPS if that is your policy, and verify that proxy headers and application-generated URLs remain correct after TLS termination.
- Validate before going live. Test each hostname over HTTP and HTTPS, confirm that WordPress permalinks work, submit a request to the application, inspect the per-site logs, and check that one domain cannot read another domain’s files.
The edge server makes the routing decision from the hostname, not from the application’s technology. That is why a WordPress request and a Node.js request can share port 443 while reaching completely different backends.
Nginx and Apache choices
Nginx
Nginx uses server blocks and is commonly placed in front of both PHP-FPM and proxied application services. It can serve static files efficiently and forward selected paths or entire hostnames to an upstream process.

WordPress on Nginx needs explicit rewrite and PHP rules. Unlike Apache, Nginx does not read a per-directory .htaccess file that WordPress can modify automatically. If those rules are missing or incorrect, the home page may work while pretty permalinks return 404 errors, PHP files may download instead of execute, or administrative requests may fail.
Apache
Apache uses virtual hosts to separate domains. Its WordPress behavior can be convenient when a site relies on .htaccess rewrites, but the same isolation principles still apply: separate document roots, permissions, logs, databases, and credentials. A non-WordPress application can be served as static files or reached through a reverse-proxy configuration.
Choose one primary edge server for the public ports unless you have a deliberate design for chaining them. Running two daemons that both try to bind to ports 80 and 443 creates a conflict rather than a multi-site solution.
Isolation that prevents cross-site damage
Putting several sites on one VPS is safe only when their boundaries are intentional. Give every site the following items wherever possible:

- A separate document root or deployment directory.
- A distinct Unix user and group, with the narrowest practical filesystem permissions.
- A separate database and database credentials for WordPress or any other database-backed application.
- Independent access and error logs, so an outage or attack can be attributed to the correct site.
- A separate backup set and a tested restore procedure.
- Its own environment variables and secret storage; never copy one application’s credentials into another application’s configuration.
When more than one PHP application runs on the VPS, separate PHP-FPM pools are useful. A pool can have its own Unix identity and resource limits, reducing accidental file access and making it easier to identify which PHP site is consuming workers.
Containers are optional. They are helpful when applications need conflicting runtime versions, repeatable deployments, or independent rollback. They do not remove the shared VPS risk: containers still share the host’s CPU, memory, disk, network, and kernel. A runaway container can still exhaust the machine unless you set resource limits and monitor it.

Resource planning and monitoring
There is no universal official limit on the number of sites a VPS can host. Capacity depends on traffic, page complexity, WordPress plugins, scheduled jobs, database queries, caching, and the non-WordPress application’s runtime.
Plan for the combined workload rather than counting domains. Monitor:
- CPU utilization and load during traffic spikes and scheduled jobs.
- Memory pressure, swap activity, and per-process usage.
- Storage capacity, disk latency, and I/O wait.
- Database connections, slow queries, and buffer or cache pressure.
- Network throughput and connection counts.
- PHP-FPM worker saturation and application response times.
- Certificate expiry, backup success, and service restart events.
Use caching where it fits, but do not assume caching hides an undersized VPS. A WordPress import, image conversion, search index, queue worker, or application build can consume resources even when page traffic is modest. Set alerts before the machine reaches exhaustion, and leave headroom for updates and recovery tasks.
Databases, backups, and maintenance
Keep database services on localhost or a private interface unless public access is genuinely required. Public database exposure increases the attack surface and is rarely needed when the web and application processes run on the same VPS.
Back up files, databases, application configuration, certificates, and deployment metadata. A backup that contains only WordPress uploads cannot restore the complete site. Store copies away from the VPS and test a full restore; an untested archive is not a recovery plan.

Review release notes for runtime changes before updating a shared machine, because a version change that fixes one application may be incompatible with another. Renew certificates before expiry and monitor renewal failures rather than assuming an automated job succeeded.

WordPress Multisite is different
WordPress Multisite can map multiple domains or subdomains to one WordPress installation. In that model, the sites share one WordPress codebase and are managed as a network, with DNS and server mappings configured for the network’s domains.
Multisite is optional. You do not need it to host an independent WordPress installation beside a Node.js, Python, Go, static, or other application. Use separate installations when the sites need independent plugin sets, update schedules, administrators, or failure boundaries.

The wrong site appears for a domain
Check the A and AAAA records first, then confirm that the request’s hostname exactly matches the intended server block or virtual host. A stale DNS record, an unexpected IPv6 path, or a default host catching unmatched requests can all produce this symptom.

WordPress permalinks return 404
On Nginx, verify the explicit WordPress rewrite and index rules; Nginx will not generate them from .htaccess. On Apache, check that the required rewrite behavior is enabled and that the site directory permits the intended rules.
PHP downloads instead of running
Inspect the PHP-FPM connection in the WordPress site definition, confirm that the PHP-FPM service is running, and check socket ownership and permissions. A missing or mismatched handler can cause the web server to send the file as plain content.
The proxied application is unreachable
Confirm that the application is listening on the address and port used by the upstream, that its service is running, and that the local firewall permits the connection. Review the edge-server error log and the application log together; a proxy timeout and an application crash are different faults.

One site slows every other site
Look for memory exhaustion, CPU saturation, disk I/O wait, database contention, PHP-FPM worker exhaustion, or a runaway background job. Apply per-service limits where appropriate, add caching, schedule heavy work, or move the demanding workload to a separate VPS if the contention is persistent.

Check that every hostname has a certificate and a matching TLS server definition, and that both IPv4 and IPv6 reach the same configured edge service. Test redirects and application-generated URLs after certificate changes.
When one VPS is the right choice
A shared VPS is a sensible choice when the sites have modest combined traffic, one operator can maintain the stack, and simplicity or cost matters more than independent scaling. It reduces duplication: one operating system, edge proxy, monitoring setup, and backup process can serve several projects.
Choose separate VPSs when workloads have very different scaling patterns, one site must remain available during another site’s maintenance, security or compliance boundaries require stronger separation, or separate teams need independent administrative control. A second VPS also limits the blast radius of a kernel, storage, or host-level failure.
Use containers on one VPS when repeatable deployment and runtime separation are valuable but the workloads still fit one machine. Treat that as an operational convenience, not as a replacement for capacity planning, patching, monitoring, and off-machine backups.

Practical checklist before launch
- Every domain has the correct A and, where applicable, AAAA record.
- Each hostname has one deliberate Nginx server block or Apache virtual host.
- WordPress has supported PHP and database versions, explicit rewrite handling, and a separate database.
- Each non-WordPress application has its own process, deployment directory, logs, and service identity.
- File permissions prevent one site from reading another site’s private files.
- HTTPS, redirects, upload limits, caching, and security headers are configured per site.
- Database services are private unless public access is required.
- Backups are off the VPS and a restore has been tested.
- Monitoring covers CPU, memory, storage, I/O, database health, application response time, and certificate expiry.
- You have a plan to move a workload to another VPS if shared-resource contention persists.
