Generally, yes—but not perfectly or in every situation. Open-ear earbuds leave the ear canal open or unsealed, so environmental sound can reach your ears while audio plays. How clearly you hear a voice, alarm or traffic cue depends on playback volume, surrounding noise, the earbuds’ fit and whether the design uses air conduction or bone conduction.
“Open-ear” describes the physical design, not a guarantee of complete awareness or safety. If you need dependable attention to your surroundings, lower the volume or pause playback rather than assuming an open design will reveal every hazard.
What open-ear earbuds actually do
Conventional in-ear earbuds create a seal inside the ear canal. Open-ear models avoid that seal: they sit outside the canal, attach around the ear, or use a transducer positioned near the ear. Because the canal remains open, outside sound has a direct path to your hearing system instead of being physically blocked by an ear tip.

You still hear two sound sources at once. Your surroundings provide voices, engines, alarms and other environmental sounds, while the earbuds deliver music, podcasts or calls. “Clearly” means the outside sound remains distinguishable from the playback, not that it arrives at the same loudness or with perfect detail. A loud track can mask a quiet voice even when the ear canal is completely unsealed.

Bose describes the category as being “designed for the moments when hearing your environment is just as important as enjoying your audio.” That is a description of the intended use, not a test result proving that every warning sound will be detected.
Why clarity changes from one situation to another
Playback volume
Volume is usually the first variable to control. Increasing the earbud output raises the competing sound level and makes softer environmental sounds harder to distinguish. At a low setting, a nearby conversation may remain intelligible; at a high setting, the same conversation can disappear beneath the music. Lowering the volume is more reliable than changing an awareness mode that you cannot verify in the moment.
Background noise
An open design does not remove the noise of a busy street, gym or train station. If the environment is already loud, the signal from a voice or bicycle bell may be difficult to separate from the general noise floor. Open earbuds can make that noise more available to you, but availability is not the same as intelligibility.

Fit and position
The speaker or transducer must stay in the position intended by its design. A clip, cuff or ear hook that shifts during exercise can move the audio source farther from the ear or change its angle. You may then turn up the volume to compensate, which increases masking and sound leakage. A stable, comfortable fit generally makes the earbuds’ own audio easier to hear at a lower level, but comfort and stability vary by ear shape and activity.
Sound leakage
Because open earbuds do not form a tight seal, some of their audio can escape into the room. Soundcore explains the trade-off this way: “Because they do not create a tight seal, you may notice lighter bass, more outside noise, or some sound leakage in certain situations.” In a quiet office or train, a nearby person may hear your music, especially when the volume is high. Leakage does not directly tell you how well you hear the environment, but it is a useful warning that high output is reaching both outside and inside your listening space.
Air conduction and bone conduction: two ways to deliver sound
Open-ear products can use different listening technologies. The distinction concerns how the earbuds deliver your chosen audio; both approaches can leave the ear canal unsealed.

| Technology | How the audio reaches you | What remains true about awareness |
|---|---|---|
| Air conduction | A small speaker sends sound through the air toward the ear canal and eardrum. | The canal is not sealed, so outside sound can also enter. Playback volume and environmental noise still determine whether a warning or conversation is distinguishable. |
| Bone conduction | Transducers send vibrations through bones around the ear toward the inner ear. | Ambient sound remains available to the outer ear, but the vibration-based playback can still compete with environmental sounds at higher levels. |
Shokz’s official explanation defines air conduction as sound traveling through air to vibrate the eardrum and bone conduction as vibrations traveling through the temporal bone to the inner ear. The company offers products using both approaches. Bose separately presents air conduction as having advantages for sound quality and speech intelligibility; those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative findings. The available material does not establish one technology as universally clearer or safer for every listener, ear shape or environment.

Clip-on designs
Clip-on earbuds grip the outer ear rather than entering the canal. Their position can keep the speaker close to the ear while leaving the opening unobstructed. Soundcore’s clip-on guidance emphasizes adjusting the wearing angle and volume. If a clip feels loose, painful or unstable, changing the position—or choosing another form factor—is preferable to increasing volume.
Cuff and ear-hook designs
Cuff-style products rest around the outer ear, while ear-hook models use a loop for additional retention. These shapes can be useful when walking or exercising because the product is not relying on an in-canal tip. They can also press on cartilage or glasses frames for some users. Assess the fit while moving your head, not only while sitting still.

Position matters more than the label
“Open-ear” covers several physical arrangements. Two products with the same label may place their transducers at different distances and angles. The practical test is whether you can hear your chosen content comfortably without raising the level so far that nearby sounds become difficult to identify.
Can you rely on open-ear earbuds while walking, running or commuting?
Manufacturers position open-ear products for walking, workouts, commuting and similar activities because the ear canal is not blocked. Shokz says, “Wearing Shokz headphones, you can enjoy your music and calls while staying aware of your surroundings.” Beyerdynamic likewise addresses hearing surroundings while running. These statements describe design goals and intended use; they do not establish that a wearer will reliably detect every vehicle, cyclist, alarm or spoken warning.

Running beside a quiet path and walking next to heavy traffic present very different acoustic conditions. Wind, road noise, crowds and buildings can mask the sounds you most need to notice. Even with no earbud seal, a high playback level can prevent you from recognizing the direction or urgency of an external sound.

- For a crossing, driveway, platform edge or other high-consequence moment, pause playback and listen deliberately.
- When moving near traffic, keep the volume low enough that a nearby person can speak to you without shouting.
- Do not treat an awareness claim as permission to ignore visual checks, traffic signals or local safety rules.
- If one ear or both ears have reduced hearing, tinnitus or another condition that affects sound perception, ask a qualified clinician how an open design fits your situation.
How to set up open-ear earbuds for the clearest awareness
- Start with a low volume. Play familiar content at the lowest level that remains intelligible. Avoid starting at the level you use with sealed in-ear earbuds; the acoustic experience is different.
- Seat the hardware correctly. Follow the product’s placement instructions so the speaker, clip or transducer rests where the manufacturer intended. Check that it does not shift when you turn your head or take several steps.
- Test speech nearby. Have someone speak from the side and behind you at a normal conversational level. If you cannot understand them, reduce playback or reposition the earbuds before using them outdoors.
- Check the actual environment. Repeat the test in the place where you plan to listen. A quiet room cannot predict performance beside a road, at a station or in a crowded gym.
- Listen for masking, not just loudness. Ask whether you can identify the direction and words of a voice, not merely notice that some sound exists. If details disappear, lower the volume or pause playback.
- Recheck after movement. Walk, jog or turn your head for several minutes. If the earbuds migrate, adjust the fit or select a more stable style instead of compensating with more volume.
Common problems and practical fixes
| What you notice | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Voices are present but words are hard to understand. | Playback is masking speech, or the surroundings are loud. | Lower the volume, pause the track during conversations, and test again from the side and behind. |
| You hear the environment but the music sounds weak. | Open designs can produce lighter bass and more outside noise because there is no tight seal. | Reposition the earbuds and use a moderate level rather than trying to create in-ear-like bass by turning the volume up. |
| People nearby can hear your audio. | Sound leakage is more noticeable at high volume, particularly in quiet places. | Reduce the level, change the fit angle if the instructions allow it, or pause playback in shared spaces. |
| Audio becomes inconsistent while exercising. | The clip, cuff or ear hook has shifted. | Stop and reseat the product. If it repeatedly moves, choose a form factor that remains stable for that activity. |
| A busy street overwhelms everything. | Environmental noise is masking both the playback and quieter cues. | Lower or stop playback and rely on visual checks and deliberate listening at complex crossings or traffic points. |
How to judge a model before you depend on it
Use the same questions for any open-ear product rather than assuming the category label predicts your experience:
- Delivery method: Is it air conduction or bone conduction, and where exactly does the transducer sit?
- Retention: Is the product a clip-on, cuff or ear hook, and does it stay put during the movement you intend to make?
- Volume control: Can you lower or pause playback quickly without searching through a phone?
- Leakage: At your normal listening level, can a person nearby hear the content in a quiet room?
- Comfort: Does the frame press on cartilage, glasses or a helmet after extended wear?
- Environment: Have you tried it in the actual acoustic setting—indoors, outdoors, windy or crowded—where awareness matters?
These checks tell you whether a particular fit and listening level work for you. They do not turn the earbuds into a safety device, and they cannot guarantee detection of every hazard.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—say
The supporting material for this question consists of manufacturer product pages, explainers and support articles. It provides definitions, design descriptions and practical cautions about volume, fit and leakage. It does not provide an independent study, a published percentage of detected hazards, a decibel threshold that guarantees awareness, or a safety rate for running, cycling or commuting.
That limitation matters. A company can accurately explain that its product leaves the ear open while still being unable to promise that a specific siren will be heard in a specific street. Treat awareness language as a design intention. Your own volume, fit and environment determine the result in each moment.
Bottom line for everyday use
Open-ear earbuds usually let environmental sound reach you more readily than sealed in-ear earbuds because they leave the canal open. You may hear conversations, traffic and other cues clearly when playback is moderate, the fit is stable and the surroundings are not overwhelming. You will not necessarily hear everything, and high volume, wind, crowds or a shifting fit can mask important sounds. Keep playback low, pause it whenever reliable attention is essential, and evaluate the exact product in the exact setting where you plan to use it.
