Yes, you can try Windows Server 2025 at no cost for 180 days, but Microsoft does not offer that evaluation as a permanently free production edition. The evaluation is available as an ISO or VHD download, or as an Azure image. Activate it online within the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown; after 180 days, the evaluation expires.

What does “free Windows Server” mean?

Microsoft’s Windows Server 2025 Evaluation Center offers a no-cost, time-limited evaluation—not an unlimited free license for an ongoing production server. Microsoft says the evaluation instance deactivates when the trial ends and that no additional end-of-trial charge is incurred. That trial page dates its description to November 2024 and says terms may change, so check the current offer before relying on it. Microsoft Evaluation Center and Microsoft’s Windows Server 2025 Trial page.

The Evaluation Center currently lists Windows Server 2025 evaluation downloads. Its ISO option covers Standard and Datacenter and offers Server Core or Server with Desktop Experience installation choices. The VHD is a virtual hard disk image; Microsoft lists English for that download. The page also offers an Azure evaluation image. See Microsoft’s evaluation options.

How long does the Windows Server trial last?

The evaluation lasts 180 days. Microsoft requires online activation within the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown. Plan to connect the installation to the internet and complete activation promptly, rather than assuming the evaluation will remain available offline indefinitely. Microsoft’s Evaluation Center provides the current terms and download options: Windows Server 2025 evaluation.

#1 Best Overall
Microsoft Windows Server 2025 Standard Edition 64-bit, Base License, 16 Core - OEM
  • 64 bit | 1 Server with 16 or less processor cores | provides 2 VMs
  • For physical or minimally virtualized environments
  • Requires Windows Server 2025 User and/or Device Client Access Licenses (CALs) | No CALs are included
  • Core-based licensing | Additional license packs required for servers with more than 16 processor cores or to add VMs | 2 VMs whenever all processor cores are licensed.
  • Product ships in plain envelope | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label |Beware of counterfeits | Genuine Windows Server software is branded by Microsoft only.

What happens when the evaluation expires?

At the end of the 180-day period, the evaluation expires and the instance deactivates. It is not a free perpetual license, and Microsoft’s no-cost trial language does not mean that you can continue running it indefinitely without licensing. Microsoft says evaluation versions can be converted to retail after the evaluation; for production use, make sure you have the appropriate commercial license and access rights. Which free evaluation route should you choose?

Route Best for Key consideration
ISO download Installing Windows Server locally or in a virtual machine 180-day evaluation; activate online within the first 10 days. Choose Server Core or Server with Desktop Experience.
VHD download Using Microsoft’s virtual hard disk image in a compatible virtualized environment 180-day evaluation; Microsoft lists English for the VHD option.

Can you use Windows Server for free in production?

The evaluation offer does not establish a permanently free production edition. Microsoft lists Standard and Datacenter as the principal Windows Server 2025 editions; both use core-based licensing and require Windows Server CALs for each user or device accessing a server. Microsoft describes Standard as suited to physical or minimally virtualized environments and Datacenter as suited to highly virtualized datacenters and cloud environments. Prices vary, and Microsoft directs buyers to a representative or reseller for a quote rather than publishing a universal fixed price. Review Microsoft’s licensing and pricing information.

If you are moving an evaluation into production, account for the server edition, licensed cores, virtualization needs, and required CALs. A trial download alone does not settle those licensing requirements.

Can you try Windows Server in Azure without paying?

You can use the Windows Server evaluation image in Azure, but that does not make the Azure resources free. Microsoft’s Azure account offer is limited to new customers and includes a $200 credit for up to 30 days. Continuing beyond the credit or 30-day window requires moving to pay-as-you-go, so check the offer terms and monitor the resources you create. Azure account purchase options.

Two other Azure licensing paths may help eligible organizations manage costs, but neither is a general-purpose free Windows Server edition:

How to decide what you need

  • For learning, testing, or a short-term lab: Use the evaluation download that fits your environment and track the 180-day expiry.
  • For an Azure experiment: Treat the Windows Server evaluation and Azure compute/account offer as separate terms, and check what happens when any credit or trial ends.
  • For ongoing production: Choose the appropriate edition and obtain a license that covers your cores and access requirements, or verify that a qualifying licensing benefit applies to your Azure workload.
