Yes, but not from the outlet by itself. A powerline networking kit carries your router’s network connection over your home’s electrical wiring. Connect one adapter to the router with Ethernet, plug another into an outlet where you need service, and connect a device to the remote adapter. You still need an active internet service and a router.
What it means to get internet through an outlet
The outlet is a route for network data, not an internet source. Powerline adapters send data over electrical conductors between adapters. The adapter beside your router connects to a LAN port; a second adapter receives the connection elsewhere in the home. Depending on the model, that remote adapter can provide Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both.
TP-Link says its powerline adapters and extenders are deployed in sets of two or more and should be connected to the same electrical circuit. An outlet’s presence alone does not mean it will provide a usable or equally fast connection: wiring condition, distance, circuit layout, and electrical noise can affect performance.

- Check what you need: an internet service, a working router with an available LAN port, and a compatible powerline kit with at least two adapters. Use the kit’s documentation for model-specific pairing instructions.
- Connect the first adapter: use an Ethernet cable to connect it to a LAN port on the router, then plug it into a wall outlet.
- Place the second adapter: plug it into a wall outlet in the room where you want a connection. For best odds of a stable link, follow the manufacturer’s guidance about using outlets on the same electrical circuit.
- Connect your device: plug a computer, television, or other device into the remote adapter’s Ethernet port. If the adapter includes Wi-Fi, follow its instructions to configure wireless access.
- Check the result where you will use it: test the connection in the destination room, since performance depends on the home’s wiring and conditions.
What the speed numbers mean
Powerline packaging may advertise a signal rate, but that is not the same as the speed an internet app or speed test will receive. TP-Link lists HomePlug AV at up to 600 Mbps physical signal rate and describes HomePlug AV2 as offering gigabit physical speeds. Those are technology-level signal-rate descriptions, not guarantees of application throughput or internet speed.

- 𝐀𝐕𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐭 - Powered by HomePlug AV2, delivers AV1000 powerline speeds through existing electrical wiring. Speeds cannot exceed your internet plan's limit and may be lower due to wiring quality, distance, and interference.
- Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
- 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.
TP-Link Support gives a typical conversion estimate of 20–30% of the declared powerline rate, depending on home wiring. Treat that as the manufacturer’s rule of thumb, not a universal or independently measured result. Your internet plan, router, adapters, wiring, distance, and electrical interference can all constrain the connection.
How to decide whether powerline is right for your home
Compare options by how they perform in the room that needs service, not by a headline speed printed on a box. Powerline may be worth trying when you need a wired connection without running a new cable, but its results are tied to the home’s electrical wiring. If wireless coverage is needed at the far end, confirm that the adapter kit includes Wi-Fi.

- EXTEND YOUR ETHERNET CONNECTION THROUGH YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - This device is meant for individuals that are not able to extend their Ethernet connections where routers or range extenders do not work. Speed cannot exceed your internet plan’s limit.
- HOMEPLUG AV2 - Delivers AV2000 powerline speeds over existing electrical wiring, extending home network wired connectivity by up to 750ft through thick walls and other barriers. Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
- CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
- ADVISORY - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.
- 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).
| Option | How it reaches the room | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Powerline adapters | Network data travels over electrical wiring between adapters. | Wiring condition, circuit layout, distance, electrical noise, and whether the remote adapter offers Wi-Fi. |
| Wi-Fi mesh or range extender | Wireless network coverage is extended toward the room. | Actual signal and connection quality in the intended location, coverage, setup, and cost. |
| Ethernet cable run | A cable directly links the router or network equipment to the room. | Installation effort, cable routing, and total cost. |
The available evidence does not establish a universal winner or provide independent head-to-head results for these options. Compare measured connection quality in the target room, reliability, coverage needs, setup effort, and total cost before choosing.

IEEE 1901-2020 defines physical and media-access-control layers for broadband powerline communications and specifies IEEE 802.1X use within IEEE 1901 networks for secure access control and protection of privacy and integrity. That standard does not establish that every consumer adapter uses the same security configuration. Check the manual for your particular kit for its pairing and encryption setup.
