Yes, you can get in trouble if the money is connected to fraud or another crime. A person who receives and forwards illicit funds may be investigated or charged, lose money when a bank reverses a transaction, have accounts closed, or face claims related to victims’ losses. The FBI and FTC also warn that a person can face serious problems even when they did not realize the money was stolen. An ordinary, documented transfer for a family member or friend is not automatically illegal; the facts, your knowledge, your actions after warning signs, and the law where you live determine the outcome.
What makes receiving and forwarding money risky?
The key issue is not simply that money passed through your account. The risk arises when someone uses you to move proceeds from fraud, theft, identity crime, or another offense. The FBI calls a person who transfers illegally acquired money for someone else a money mule. A mule may knowingly participate, or may believe the request is a job, a favor for a romantic partner, or a legitimate payment-processing task.
Criminals use other people’s bank accounts, payment apps, checks, wires, virtual currency, prepaid cards, and money-service businesses to make stolen funds harder to trace. They may promise a commission, tell you to keep part of a payment, or say that forwarding the money is the only way to release a package, complete a contract, or help someone you met online.

How money-mule schemes recruit people
Fake jobs and “payment processing” work
A supposed employer may offer easy income for receiving payments in your personal account and sending the money elsewhere. Duties are vague, the pay is disproportionate to the work, and you may be told to use your own account because the company’s system is unavailable. The FBI identifies an employer asking you to process company money through a personal account as a major warning sign.
Romance, friendship, and social-media contacts
An online partner or new acquaintance may say they cannot access a bank account, need help moving money internationally, or want you to receive a payment and send it to a “supplier” or relative. The relationship can be real to you while the person is operating as part of a criminal network, or the account itself may be impersonated or controlled by someone else.
Requests involving checks, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
A scammer may send a check that appears to clear, then ask you to wire money, buy gift cards, or convert funds to virtual currency. A balance showing in your account does not prove that the check is genuine. Banks can discover the fraud later and reverse the deposit.
Warning signs that should make you stop
- Unusually high pay for a simple transfer.
- Vague duties or no verifiable business information.
- An online contact asks to use your personal account.
- You are instructed to send money to people you have never met.
- You are allowed to keep a fee or percentage from a transfer.
- You are pressured to act quickly or told not to contact the bank.
- The sender cannot clearly explain where the money came from and why it must be routed through you.
What criminal exposure is possible?
The FBI lists several federal offenses that can arise in money-mule cases: mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft. These are possible charges, not an automatic list of charges for every person who makes a transfer. Prosecutors would need to apply the relevant law to the conduct and available evidence.

| Conduct or circumstance | Why it matters | What the agencies establish |
|---|---|---|
| Knowingly receiving and forwarding fraud proceeds | Suggests intentional participation in moving criminal money. | The FBI identifies this pattern as money-mule activity and lists several potential federal charges. |
| Continuing after warnings or obvious red flags | Later actions may make a claim of innocent participation less persuasive. | Agency guidance treats knowledge, warnings, and ongoing participation as important context; it does not provide a formula for liability. |
| Keeping a commission or percentage | Personal financial benefit can be evidence of participation and increases the financial stakes. | The FBI describes commission-based recruitment; the legal effect depends on the facts. |
| Receiving money without knowing it was stolen | Lack of knowledge may be relevant but does not guarantee that no investigation or legal trouble will follow. | The FTC warns that moving stolen money can create legal trouble even when the person did not know its origin. |
An investigation does not prove guilt, and a warning sign does not by itself establish a crime. The outcome can depend on what you were told, what you actually understood, the number and value of transfers, whether you ignored later warnings, and whether you cooperated when the problem was discovered.
What if you did not know the money was stolen?
Unawareness does not make the situation safe. The FBI says some money mules do not know they are helping a scheme, and the FTC warns that a person who helps move stolen money can still face legal trouble without knowing it was stolen. Those statements describe risk, not a rule that an unaware person will be convicted.
Knowledge is only one part of the factual picture. Investigators may examine the messages you received, the explanation for the payment, the identity of the sender, the destination, the amount and frequency of transfers, and what you did after someone questioned the transaction. Stopping when you recognize warning signs and promptly telling your bank can be important facts, but no agency guidance promises a particular legal result.

Financial and account consequences
A check can be reversed after it appears to clear
The FTC warns that a fraudulent check may initially be credited to your account. If the bank later determines that the check is counterfeit or otherwise fraudulent, it can require you to repay the full amount. You may also face fees, an overdraft, or closure of the account. Sending the money onward before the reversal can leave you owing the bank even though the recipient has already taken the funds.

You may be exposed to identity theft
The FBI warns that criminals may steal a mule’s personal information and use it for additional crimes. Information requested for a supposed job or payment can include account numbers, identification documents, tax details, or login credentials. The FBI also warns that a person may be held liable for victims’ losses; whether liability applies in a particular case depends on the law and facts.
Payment services can restrict access
A bank, wire company, payment service, or gift-card issuer may investigate a suspicious transfer, freeze activity, reverse a payment, or close an account. These are practical consequences that can occur even before a criminal case is resolved. Keep records of every notice you receive so you can explain the sequence of events.
How to judge the situation without guessing your legal outcome
No single fact determines liability. Use the following questions to organize what happened for your bank, a lawyer, or an investigator:
- Where are you located? Federal, state, and foreign laws differ. The applicable law may also depend on where the sender, recipient, bank, and victims are located.
- What was the source of the funds? A normal salary, reimbursement, or documented family payment presents a different issue from an unexplained check or transfer tied to a stranger.
- What did you know or receive in writing? Messages promising easy money, secrecy, or a percentage can become important evidence.
- Did you notice warnings and continue? Continuing after a bank alert, a failed payment, or a clear explanation that the funds were stolen can change the factual picture.
- How much and how often did you transfer? Repeated or large transactions may draw more scrutiny than an isolated, ordinary payment, but there is no safe dollar threshold.
- Did you keep a fee? A commission can show that you benefited, although the significance depends on all the circumstances.
- What did you do once you became concerned? Promptly stopping, preserving records, and contacting the institution is different from deleting messages or sending the remaining balance onward.
What to do if someone has asked you to forward money
- Stop the transfer and pause communication. Do not send another payment while you try to understand the request. The FTC and Department of Justice advise stopping and ending contact with the person directing the transaction.
- Do not forward funds still in your possession. If money remains in your account, leave it there while you contact the bank. The Department of Justice specifically advises not sending remaining money back to the person giving instructions.
- Call your bank or financial institution through an official channel. Explain that you may have received or transferred funds connected to fraud. Ask what to do with the balance, whether a recall or freeze is possible, and how to document the report. Do not rely on a phone number supplied by the person who recruited you.
- Contact other providers involved. Notify the wire-transfer company, payment service, gift-card issuer, or virtual-currency platform used in the transaction. Ask about cancellation, recall, or fraud procedures; recovery is not guaranteed.
- Preserve evidence. Keep emails, chats, user names, phone numbers, receipts, check images, account numbers, transaction IDs, shipping records, and notices from the bank. Do not delete or alter messages, even if they are embarrassing.
- Report the suspected scheme. U.S. guidance points to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and the Federal Trade Commission’s fraud-reporting channel. If you are elsewhere, use the reporting route for your country. Provide the records and transaction details requested.
- Get legal advice when the stakes are serious. If a bank has frozen your account, an investigator has contacted you, you received a subpoena, or the loss is substantial, speak with a qualified lawyer licensed where the events occurred. Agency guidance cannot determine your individual criminal liability.
What not to do after discovering a problem
- Do not spend, withdraw, or “refund” suspicious funds on your own.
- Do not send the balance to a new account, cryptocurrency wallet, gift-card number, or overseas recipient because the recruiter says it will fix the problem.
- Do not delete conversations, receipts, or account alerts.
- Do not create a new explanation for the transfer or tell the bank only part of what happened.
- Do not assume that an account credit means the payment is final.
United States and United Kingdom guidance are not interchangeable
This explanation is centered on U.S. federal agency guidance. The FBI, FTC, and Department of Justice describe the risks and reporting options above, but the reader’s state, the location of the bank, and the countries involved can change the applicable rules.

The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency separately warns that transferring criminal money is a crime and describes money-mule networks as a form of money laundering. That is UK guidance and should not be treated as a statement of law in the United States or another country. If the transaction crosses borders, obtain advice for the jurisdictions involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How common enforcement is described
A 2024 U.S. Department of Justice enforcement announcement said that more than 20 individuals were criminally charged in an initiative involving people who knowingly received and forwarded victim funds or otherwise laundered fraud proceeds. That is a count from one enforcement announcement, not a general probability that any person who transfers money will be prosecuted.
FBI Supervisory Special Agent James Abbott warned: “If you send and receive money at someone else’s request—especially someone you’ve never met—you are likely helping criminals to steal from hardworking people, senior citizens, and small businesses.”

Examples of how the facts can differ
An ordinary family reimbursement
Your sibling sends money to your account with a clear explanation, and you pay a named contractor using an invoice. You keep the invoice and can verify the people involved. That is materially different from an unexplained payment from a stranger followed by instructions to send money to another stranger.
A fake-employer check
A person you met through an online job listing sends a check, tells you to keep a small commission, and orders you to wire the rest. The check appears in your balance, but the bank later reverses it. You may owe the bank the full amount and could face investigation, even if you believed the job was real.
An online partner’s urgent request
An online partner says they need you to receive money and forward it immediately. The sender is unknown, the reason changes, and you are told not to involve your bank. Those combined warnings are a strong reason to stop, retain the messages, and contact your financial institution rather than complying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line for a person who already forwarded money
Receiving and forwarding money is not automatically a crime, but doing so for a fraudster can create criminal, civil, identity, and banking consequences. Lack of knowledge may matter, yet it does not guarantee immunity. Stop further transfers, leave remaining funds untouched, notify the institutions involved, preserve every record, report the suspected fraud, and obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice if authorities or significant losses are involved.
