Sometimes, but a server shutdown does not create an automatic worldwide right to a full refund. Your prospects depend on what the game was advertised to provide, whether the seller disclosed a service duration or termination condition, how much functionality disappeared, the time and play limits in the store’s ordinary policy, and the consumer law where you bought it. A shutdown can support a refund request when the remaining product no longer conforms to the contract or reasonable expectations, but the result is usually assessed case by case.
What a server shutdown changes
“The servers are closing” can describe several different events. Identify the exact loss before asking for money back, because a claim that multiplayer matchmaking ended is different from a claim that the game cannot authenticate, launch, download owned content, or be played at all.
Multiplayer services only
If competitive or cooperative servers close while a substantial single-player or local mode still works, the seller may argue that only part of the supplied functionality was affected. A proportionate remedy is more plausible than an automatic full refund in that situation, especially when the listing described the game as online-only multiplayer or warned that online features could end.

Authentication and account services
Some games require a publisher account or a server check every time they start. If that service is discontinued and the title will no longer launch, the practical loss is broader than the end of matchmaking. Record the error message, the date it first appeared, and whether an offline patch or alternative login was offered.

Downloadable content and cloud features
A shutdown may remove access to downloadable missions, virtual items, cloud saves, user-generated content, or an in-game store while the base game remains playable. List each lost feature separately. The value and representation of an affected expansion or online purchase may differ from the base game.
Three different routes to a refund
Keep these routes separate. A store’s routine return policy is not the same thing as a statutory remedy for digital content that no longer conforms to the contract, and neither guarantees a discretionary exception from customer support.
1. Ordinary store-policy return
Digital stores commonly impose a short period from purchase and a play-time limit. These rules are designed for early returns, not necessarily for a service that fails months or years later. They are still the fastest first step, but an expired window does not by itself settle a possible legal claim.
2. Statutory non-conformity remedy
Consumer laws in some jurisdictions require digital content or services to match the contract and reasonable expectations. If a shutdown removes a feature that was a material part of what you bought, you can ask the seller to apply that law. The remedy may be repair, continued access, a price reduction, or a refund, depending on the country and facts. Where only part of the package is affected, the refund can be limited to that part.

3. Discretionary support exception
A platform or publisher may review an unusual case outside its published window. Support agents can grant a credit or refund voluntarily, but that decision is not proof that every buyer has the same entitlement. Explain the concrete loss rather than simply stating that the game is old.
Questions that determine whether your claim is strong
What did the listing or contract promise?
Save the store description, box or key-reseller description, screenshots, and terms that applied when you bought the game. Look for statements such as “online-only,” “requires a persistent internet connection,” a stated service period, or a warning that online features could be terminated. A provider is expected to disclose duration and termination conditions before entering a digital-content contract in the European Union.
Was the shutdown foreseeable and disclosed?
A clearly disclosed end date or termination clause can weaken an argument that continued operation was promised. A sudden closure of a feature presented as a core, ongoing part of the product can support the opposite position. Do not assume that a general right to terminate a service overrides every consumer guarantee; those are separate questions.

How much of the purchase still works?
Test the modes and content you actually purchased. Note whether local multiplayer, single-player campaigns, downloaded expansions, saves, and previously earned items remain usable. A game that is entirely unusable presents a different loss from one that has lost an optional online lobby.

Who took your payment?
The seller on your receipt is normally the party to contact first. A console manufacturer may provide the storefront while a different company sold a code, and a publisher may operate the servers without having processed your payment. Include the transaction ID and the country of purchase.
Store policies: useful starting points, not the whole answer

An ordinary refusal that cites a 14-day or play-time rule may address only the store’s voluntary policy. Ask the seller to state whether it has considered a statutory digital-content remedy as well.
European Union: possible proportionate relief
In a 16 June 2026 response to the “Stop Destroying Videogames” initiative, the European Commission said providers must disclose the game or service’s duration and termination conditions before the contract. EU digital-content rules provide remedies when the supplied service fails to conform to the contract or to reasonable expectations. The Commission stated: “Consumers may be entitled to proportionate refund of their purchases.”

The Commission also said in June 2026 that it could not at that stage propose a general legal obligation requiring every commercially discontinued game to remain playable. It planned engagement with consumers and publishers by the end of 2026. Therefore, a shutdown may be relevant evidence in a conformity claim, but there is no EU-wide rule that automatically keeps every title online.
United Kingdom: Consumer Rights Act framework
Sections 44 and 45 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 provide remedies for qualifying digital-content breaches. Where the statutory conditions are met, a consumer can have a right to a refund. The amount may be limited to the part attributable to content affected by the breach; unaffected content does not automatically become refundable.
Once the trader agrees that the consumer is entitled to a refund, it must be made without undue delay and no later than 14 days after that agreement. Whether a particular server shutdown is a breach depends on the contract, the representations made at sale, the functionality lost, and the surrounding facts. The Act does not mean that every closure triggers a refund.
A 2025 UK parliamentary answer said the government had no plans to amend consumer law on digital obsolescence and that UK law does not require software companies to support older versions. That is background policy, not a ruling that a specific shutdown is lawful or that no refund can ever be due.

How to make a well-supported request
- Confirm the shutdown. Find the publisher’s notice, status page, or in-game message. Write down the effective date and distinguish multiplayer, authentication, downloads, accounts, and other affected services.
- Map what remains. Launch the game offline, test local modes and owned expansions, and record which functions fail. Do not claim the entire product is unusable if only one component is gone.
- Identify the transaction. Gather the receipt, purchase date, platform, country, account, product edition, and transaction number. Contact the party that actually charged you.
- Preserve the original representation. Save the product page, packaging, technical requirements, service-duration language, termination terms, and any notice shown at purchase. Web pages can change after a closure.
- Use the normal support form first. State the game, purchase date, shutdown date, lost features, and the evidence you have. Explain why the current product differs from what was represented.
- Ask for the correct basis. Request the ordinary refund if you are within its time and play limits. If you are outside them, ask the seller to review the case under any statutory rights for faulty or non-conforming digital content and to consider a proportionate remedy.
- Keep a paper trail. Save ticket numbers, replies, screenshots, and dates. Ask the seller to identify whether its refusal relies only on store policy or also rejects a legal conformity claim.
- Escalate locally if necessary. If the seller refuses, contact a consumer-protection authority or consumer-advice service in the country of purchase. Provide the contract evidence and correspondence rather than asserting that a refund is guaranteed.
How common fact patterns may play out

These are decision factors, not guaranteed outcomes. The same shutdown can produce different results for buyers in different countries, editions, or purchase channels.
If the seller says “the policy window expired”
Reply once, concisely, with the distinction between an ordinary cancellation request and a later failure of digital content to conform. Attach the original description and shutdown notice, identify the functions lost, and ask for a written decision on any local-law remedy. Do not threaten a chargeback as a first tactic: a payment reversal can suspend an account or create a separate dispute, and it does not determine your underlying consumer rights.
If a regulator or advice service is available, ask what evidence it expects and whether the seller must be given a formal notice. For a high-value purchase, multiple affected expansions, or a cross-border transaction, qualified legal advice may be appropriate because contract terms and national implementation differ.

What you still own after the servers close
A purchase normally gives a licence or access right under the seller’s terms rather than ownership of the publisher’s servers. Closing a server does not automatically erase a downloaded copy, but it can make online-dependent code, authentication, cloud saves, or purchased virtual goods unusable. Keep local installers, saves, receipts, and notices where the licence permits; preservation does not create a right to bypass access controls or revive a discontinued service.
The practical question for a refund is therefore not simply “Did the servers close?” It is whether the product you received, measured against the sale representation and applicable law, still delivers the contracted digital content and service.
