Sometimes—but a game shutdown does not automatically entitle every player to a refund. Your options depend on where you live, what you bought, when you bought it, and whether you paid through an app store, console or PC storefront, or the game publisher. Start by checking the purchase channel’s rules and the consumer protections that apply in your country.
What determines whether a shutdown purchase can be refunded?
Assess each transaction separately. A virtual-currency purchase, a subscription, a consumable item, and a paid access entitlement may raise different questions. Also consider whether the item or service is wholly unavailable, partly usable, or still delivered as described. These details matter under platform policies and applicable consumer law; the word “shutdown” alone does not settle the outcome.
- Location: Consumer protections and store policies vary by country or region.
- Payment channel: The company that processed the charge is usually the place to start.
- Purchase date and request timing: Policies may apply only to transactions within defined periods.
- What you bought: Identify the specific content or service and what remains usable.
How to request a refund
- Find the transaction. Check your receipt or purchase history and note the date, item, amount, game, and payment channel.
- Contact the seller that processed the payment. This may be Apple, Google Play, a console or PC store, or the game publisher. Check the policy for your country and transaction. Google notes that contacting an app developer may be the quickest way to resolve some purchase issues.
- Explain what became unavailable. State when the game or paid feature stopped working, what you purchased, and whether any part remains usable. Attach or retain the shutdown notice and receipt.
- Ask for the applicable remedy. Where local law provides a refund, you can request payment back through the original payment method. Keep copies of the request and any response.
- If refused, check local consumer-protection options. The appropriate next step depends on your jurisdiction. A chargeback, complaint, or legal claim is not guaranteed by the examples below.
What UK law says about digital-content refunds
The UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides remedies when digital content fails to meet statutory requirements. Whether a particular game closure meets the legal test depends on the purchase and circumstances; the closure by itself does not establish that a refund is owed.
Under section 45, once a trader agrees that a consumer is entitled to a refund, it must pay without undue delay and within 14 days. The refund generally must use the original payment method unless the consumer expressly agrees otherwise. The statutory remedy concerns the affected digital content and the scope of the breach. The Act’s explanatory notes discuss how the appropriate remedy can reflect how much content was affected. They also explain that, when a refund is due for money paid to a trader for its own virtual currency, returning only that currency may not meet the requirement to repay through the original means of payment. Apply the statute to the specific transaction rather than assuming this explanation resolves every in-game currency dispute. Read the explanatory notes on digital-content remedies.
A written parliamentary answer published on 11 March 2025 said the UK government had no plans at that time to amend consumer law on digital obsolescence and noted that UK law did not require software companies to support older product versions. Google Play refunds in the EEA and UK
Google says most Google Play purchases are not refunded under its general policy, though exceptions apply. Its EEA/UK guidance says that agreeing to immediate access to digital content waives the automatic statutory withdrawal right. It also says a refund or alternative remedy may be available if digital content is defective, unavailable, or does not perform as stated. How to request an Apple refund
Apple says some App Store and other Apple-service purchases may be eligible; it does not promise that a game shutdown alone qualifies. To submit a request, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “Request a refund,” select a reason and the item, then submit. Apple says it provides an update within 24 to 48 hours, which is not a promise that the refund itself will be paid in that time. Regional consumer-law protections may also apply. Make a separate record for each charge rather than submitting one broad claim for everything associated with the game. For every transaction, note your country, payment channel, purchase date, item type, and whether the content is unavailable or still partly usable. A publisher may have closed the game while a storefront handled the payment, so check the receipt to identify the seller and follow that channel’s process.
