Usually, no automatic refund is created when an EA game closes. Electronic Arts says separately purchased downloadable content (DLC) and in-game currencies are not refundable under its standard policy, and its User Agreement says EA Virtual Currency is non-refundable, subject to the Terms of Sale and applicable law. Your practical options depend on what you bought, whether it was used, where you paid, what service actually shut down, and the consumer-protection rules in your country.
Why a game shutdown does not automatically reverse a purchase
Buying coins, points, cosmetic items, packs, characters, boosts or other digital content normally gives you a licence or access right under the game’s terms; it is not the same as buying a physical object that can be returned. When EA retires a game or turns off online services, the closure itself does not rewrite the original transaction into a refundable one.
EA’s published refund policy expressly says that downloadable content and in-game currencies are not refundable when purchased separately. That is an EA policy position, not a ruling on your statutory rights. The company’s User Agreement uses broader wording: “EA Virtual Currency is non-refundable.” It also says unused virtual currency is not entitled to a refund, subject to the Terms of Sale and applicable law.
Those rules explain why a support agent may reject a request even when the shutdown is frustrating. They do not settle every case. A purchase can still be disputed if it was unauthorised, technically defective, misdescribed, charged twice, or covered by a storefront’s own refund window. A local digital-content law may also give you remedies that are separate from EA’s voluntary policy.

What determines whether you have a viable claim
Assess these factors before contacting anyone. They determine which policy applies and what evidence you need.

Who should issue the refund?
Purchases made directly from EA
For an EA app or EA.com transaction, start with EA’s Payments & Wallet area and its Refund Tool. EA’s refund guidance directs customers to submit eligible requests there or through EA Help. Have the transaction ID, receipt, account email, purchase date and a precise description of what stopped working.
EA may apply its exclusion for separately purchased currency or DLC even if the game has been sunset. Explain the actual failure rather than relying only on the word “closure”: for example, “the purchased content can no longer be delivered,” “the account balance disappeared,” or “the service ended before the advertised access period.” Ask the agent to identify the policy clause used to deny the request.
Purchases made through a console, PC or mobile storefront
EA says it cannot process purchases made through PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, Epic, Apple, Google or physical retailers. Submit the request to the seller shown on your receipt. The storefront may have its own time limit, evidence requirements and rules for consumed digital content.

Do not open duplicate cases with several sellers for the same transaction. That can create conflicting records. Use the payment descriptor and order number to identify the correct merchant, then keep the case number and the complete response.
What can remain usable after a closure?
A shutdown does not always mean that every purchased item instantly becomes worthless. EA’s service-shutdown guidance says that, depending on the game and which services are discontinued, inventory of virtual currency or in-game items may continue to be used even when the in-game store is closed or the game is no longer sold.
That distinction matters. If you can still spend an existing balance, access downloaded DLC, or use items in a remaining mode, the seller can argue that the purchased benefit has not disappeared. If the game is entirely inaccessible, account data was deleted, or an item that was advertised for a defined period cannot be delivered, your evidence is stronger, although EA’s no-refund language may still be raised.
Save the shutdown announcement and note exactly what changed: login, matchmaking, store purchases, inventory, cloud saves, downloadable files and offline play. A statement that “the game closed” is less useful than a dated record showing which purchased function became unavailable.

Step-by-step: how to request money back
- Inventory the purchase. Write down the product name, amount of currency or DLC, whether it was consumed, the account that received it and the date of purchase. Separate several transactions instead of combining unrelated charges.
- Identify the merchant. Match the receipt, bank statement or payment email to EA, a console or PC storefront, a mobile store or a physical retailer. The original seller is generally the correct first contact.
- Collect proof. Keep the receipt, transaction ID, purchase date, account identifier, shutdown notice, screenshots of error messages, and evidence that the content became unavailable or faulty. Do not send passwords or full payment-card numbers.
- Check the ordinary refund route. For EA-direct purchases, open Payments & Wallet, use the Refund Tool or contact EA Help. For other purchases, use that platform’s order-history refund flow or support channel.
- Describe the remedy you seek. State whether you want a full refund, a partial refund for an undelivered period, restoration of access or another remedy allowed by local law. Explain why the content was not provided as represented.
- Ask for a written decision. If refused, request the specific term or rule, the date it was applied and any appeal route. Keep the response with your case number.
- Escalate proportionately. Check the retailer’s formal appeal process and your country’s consumer-protection or alternative-dispute-resolution options. A card dispute should be reserved for a genuine billing or non-delivery issue and supported by your records.
How consumer law can change the result
EA’s warranty information says statutory rights are separate from its refund policy. Depending on your country, digital-content rules may require content to match its description, function with reasonable quality, and remain available for the promised period. Remedies can include repair, replacement, a price reduction, a partial refund or a full refund. The claim is generally made against the retailer that sold the content, not automatically against EA if another storefront processed the sale.
These rights are not identical everywhere. Some systems require the seller to be given a reasonable chance to fix a defect; others distinguish a minor fault from a serious failure. A voluntary “no refunds” term usually cannot remove mandatory consumer protections, but proving a legal defect may require showing what was promised, what was withdrawn and when.
Use the law that applies where you bought the product and where you reside, rather than assuming a rule from another country. A national consumer agency, recognised dispute-resolution service or qualified local adviser can explain deadlines and available remedies. EA’s statement that rights are subject to applicable law is not a guarantee that every claim will succeed.

Unused coins after the store closes
If the balance remains usable in the game, EA’s service-shutdown guidance gives the seller a basis to deny a refund. If the entire game or account is inaccessible, submit the request anyway with proof of the lost access. Expect the standard non-refundable-virtual-currency term to be considered, and rely on local law only if the facts support a digital-content failure.

Coins or items already spent
Once currency has been exchanged for a consumed item, a reversal is more difficult. Identify the specific defect or non-delivery rather than claiming simply that the game later closed. An unauthorised or duplicate charge is a different issue and should be reported as such to the payment seller promptly.
Separately purchased DLC
EA’s standard policy excludes separately purchased DLC from refunds. A request may still be relevant if the DLC never downloaded, was materially misdescribed, or is covered by a mandatory digital-content guarantee. The seller and the purchase date determine which process and deadline apply.
Subscription or time-limited access
Check the subscription terms and the period for which access was paid. If service stopped before the paid period ended, ask the merchant to consider a prorated remedy and provide the shutdown date and billing record. Do not assume that the rules for one-time currency purchases automatically govern a subscription.

Purchase made on a console or mobile device
Contact the platform that appears on the receipt, even if the game publisher announced the closure. Include the platform order number and explain whether the issue is non-delivery, loss of access or an unauthorised transaction. EA support may be unable to alter a charge it did not collect.

Reasons a request is commonly rejected—and how to respond
- “Virtual currency is non-refundable.” Ask whether the decision concerns EA’s voluntary policy or a statutory claim, and provide evidence of non-delivery, a serious defect or an unauthorised charge if applicable.
- “The item was consumed.” Show that the transaction was duplicated, unauthorised or that the promised functionality was never delivered. A later shutdown alone may not overcome this response.
- “You contacted the wrong company.” Recheck the receipt and redirect the request to the original seller. Keep the first case record so you can explain the referral.
- “The game is still available.” Document the precise feature that failed, such as login, inventory access or a purchased mode, rather than claiming total closure when only one service ended.
- “The request is outside the window.” Ask whether an exception exists for a newly discovered defect or legal remedy, then check the applicable consumer-law deadline separately.
What to include in your support message
A concise, factual message is easier to evaluate than a general complaint. Include the account identifier, merchant, order number, product, amount, date, shutdown date, the function that became unavailable, whether the content was used, and the remedy requested. Attach readable receipts and screenshots. State your country because eligibility can depend on jurisdiction. Avoid threats, repeated submissions and unsupported legal conclusions.
For example: “Order 12345, purchased from [merchant shown on receipt] on 14 March, contained 2,000 units of currency. On [date], the game became inaccessible after the announced service shutdown, so the balance cannot be used. Please review a refund or the remedy required by the digital-content rules applicable in [country].” Keep variable details in your own message; do not include passwords or sensitive card data in a support ticket.
Bottom line for players
An EA game closing does not by itself create an automatic refund right. EA excludes separately purchased DLC and in-game currency in its standard policy and describes unused EA Virtual Currency as non-refundable, subject to sale terms and applicable law. Your strongest practical route is to document what became unavailable, contact the merchant that took payment, and invoke local digital-content rights when the facts show a defect, non-delivery, unauthorised charge or loss of a promised paid period.
