Usually, no. Nintendo’s published policies generally treat mistaken Nintendo eShop game and downloadable-content purchases as final. Nintendo of America says it is “unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases,” while the United States digital-products policy says Nintendo Account payments are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one.
You should still contact the official Nintendo Support team for the country or region attached to your Nintendo Account. Support can review the transaction, but Nintendo does not publish a guaranteed goodwill exception, approval rate, processing time, or refund method for accidental purchases.
The short answer depends on your account region
Nintendo eShop refund rules are not one worldwide rule. The country or region associated with your Nintendo Account determines which policy and consumer-protection rules apply. A purchase made on a Switch while traveling is normally evaluated according to the account region, not simply the country where the console happened to be used.
Across the official regional policies, the default position is that a completed digital purchase cannot be reversed merely because you selected the wrong title, changed your mind, or did not intend to buy it. The important differences concern non-downloads, digital-cancellation language, and rights required by local law.

The table describes the published baseline, not a promise about the result of an individual support request. If your account is in another country, use that country’s Nintendo Support site and terms rather than applying one of these regional statements automatically.
Why an accidental digital purchase is normally final
A Nintendo eShop game or DLC license is delivered digitally rather than returned like a physical cartridge. Nintendo’s terms are written around the point at which the digital service begins. In the United States, the policy describes Nintendo Account payments as final and non-refundable except for an authorization by Nintendo or a requirement imposed by law. That wording includes pre-purchases and subscriptions, not just games that have already been downloaded.
The United Kingdom makes the timing more explicit. Its terms say that, when digital content is purchased, the customer consents to Nintendo beginning performance immediately, before the ordinary cancellation period ends, and acknowledges losing the cancellation right at that point. This is why “I have not opened the game yet” is not the same as a statutory right to cancel.

Japan’s notice is even more direct about non-use: a downloaded-product purchase is not returnable, refundable, or transferable even if the product has not been downloaded or used. Deleting a game from the console also does not undo the transaction; deletion removes local software, not the Nintendo Account purchase record.

What to do immediately after the mistake
Stop using the purchase
Do not launch the game, spend consumable DLC, or continue using content while you collect the transaction details. Stopping use does not create a refund entitlement, but it lets you describe the situation accurately. Do not uninstall the title as a substitute for contacting support; uninstalling does not cancel an eShop order.
Identify the exact transaction
Prepare the information support will need to locate the order:
- The Nintendo Account email address or account identifier.
- The exact game, edition, bundle, or DLC name.
- The purchase date and approximate time.
- The order, receipt, or transaction number from the confirmation email or account history.
- The amount and currency charged.
- The country or region assigned to the Nintendo Account.
- The Switch profile that initiated the purchase, if more than one profile uses the console.
If a child or another household member made the purchase, say so plainly. Do not describe an accidental purchase as a technical defect or unauthorized transaction unless that is what actually happened.

- Open the official support site for the account region. Nintendo’s North American guidance directs customers with unresolved situations to contact Nintendo. Use the regional site that matches the Nintendo Account, not a reseller, forum, or a different country’s contact form.
- Select the closest purchase or Nintendo Account category. The labels vary by region, but look for digital purchases, Nintendo eShop, billing, or Nintendo Account assistance. If the automated flow does not list “accidental purchase,” choose the general purchase-support route.
- Provide the transaction details. Include the title, date, amount, receipt number, account email, and region in the first message. Supplying complete information reduces back-and-forth and helps support distinguish two similar orders.
- Explain the mistake in one factual sentence. Examples include “I selected the wrong game,” “I bought the same DLC twice,” or “A child using my console completed this purchase.” State whether the game or DLC was downloaded, launched, or used.
- Ask what remedy is available under the regional policy. You can request a refund review, but do not present it as an automatic right where the published terms say otherwise. Ask whether another account remedy is available if a refund cannot be issued.
- Keep the case number and reply to the same case. If support asks for verification, answer through the official channel and avoid sending payment credentials that are not requested.
A concise message is more useful than an emotional or speculative one. You could write: “I purchased [title] on [date] from the Nintendo Account ending in [identifier]. The purchase was accidental because [accurate reason]. The item has [not been downloaded / been downloaded but not launched / been used]. The receipt number is [number]. Please tell me whether any remedy is available under the policy for my account region.” Any identifying placeholders in that example should be replaced with your real details before sending.

How common situations are treated
Wrong game or wrong edition
Choosing the wrong title, platform version, language edition, or bundle is the clearest example of a “mistaken purchase.” Nintendo of America’s support article specifically groups “Wrong Game” and “Accidental Purchase” with cases that cannot be refunded or exchanged. Ask support anyway, but expect the published default to apply.
Duplicate purchase
If two charges appear for the same game or DLC, provide both receipt numbers and explain whether the second order was deliberate. A duplicate charge is factually different from disliking a game, but the available policies do not publish a guaranteed duplicate-purchase refund. Let support determine whether the records show two completed orders or one authorization and one settled charge.
Child or household purchase
Identify the profile and account that made the purchase and explain how it happened. Do not claim that the purchase was unauthorized if the account holder knowingly allowed the transaction. Nintendo’s published material does not promise a special child-purchase exception or a one-time courtesy refund.

A genuine technical problem
A broken download, corrupted software, or inability to access content is a different support issue from buying the wrong game. Report the actual technical symptoms, console and account details, and any error code. Do not invent a defect to improve the chances of a refund review; inaccurate information can make the case harder to resolve.
When local law may change the result
Nintendo’s United States policy expressly says that payments are non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. That clause matters because mandatory digital-content protections can operate separately from Nintendo’s general no-refund rule. The United Kingdom terms also describe the loss of cancellation rights in connection with immediate digital performance, while preserving whatever rights cannot legally be excluded.
The practical approach is to tell support the country of the Nintendo Account and ask how any mandatory digital-content right applies to the specific transaction. Do not assume that a rule from another country transfers to your account. If you believe a non-waivable right has been denied, obtain advice from the relevant consumer-protection authority or qualified adviser in your jurisdiction and keep your receipt and support correspondence.

Official Nintendo material does not publish a refund-approval percentage for accidental eShop purchases. It also does not guarantee a one-time courtesy refund, identify a standard response or processing period, or promise a particular method or timing for returning money. Statements that Nintendo “always” grants one accidental-purchase refund, that every unused download is automatically refundable, or that deleting a game cancels the order go beyond the published policies.

Support may decline a request even when the game was never launched. Conversely, a support representative may ask for more information or explain a remedy available under local law. Treat any favorable outcome as a case-specific decision rather than a published entitlement.
If support says no
- Read the response carefully and check that it refers to the correct Nintendo Account, title, region, and transaction.
- If a factual detail is wrong, reply in the same case with the receipt number and a precise correction.
- If you are relying on a mandatory consumer right, ask support to explain how that right was considered and keep the written response.
- Do not submit a false defect or unauthorized-transaction claim simply to obtain a different review.
- For a possible legal-rights dispute, contact the consumer-protection body or adviser serving the account holder’s jurisdiction.
A refusal under Nintendo’s normal policy is not evidence that every country has identical rules. It means the request was evaluated against the account region and the facts provided. Any further remedy depends on the law and dispute process that applies where the account is registered.
Pre-contact checklist
- Stop launching or using the accidentally purchased content.
- Find the Nintendo Account email or identifier.
- Copy the exact title, edition, DLC name, receipt number, date, amount, and currency.
- Confirm the Nintendo Account country or region.
- Record whether the content was downloaded, launched, or used.
- Describe the mistake accurately and distinguish it from a technical fault.
- Use the official Nintendo Support route for that region.
- Ask what remedy is available under the applicable policy and law.
- Save the case number and all replies.
The realistic expectation is therefore straightforward: an accidental Nintendo Switch eShop purchase is normally non-refundable, but a prompt, accurate request to the correct regional support team is the only official way to have the transaction reviewed. Where local law creates a separate right, identify that right with the account region rather than relying on general advice from another country.
