Usually, no. PlayStation’s standard cancellation policy allows a digital PS5 game or add-on to be canceled within 14 days only if you have not started downloading or streaming it. The 14-day period alone does not make a downloaded game refundable. The main exception is faulty content: if the game does not work as promised, you may have a refund or other remedy after contacting PlayStation Support. Your account country and local consumer law can add rights beyond the standard policy.
The short answer for a downloaded PS5 game
If a PlayStation Store game has started downloading or streaming, it normally falls outside the ordinary 14-day cancellation route. This remains true even when you bought it recently, have played only briefly, or downloaded it by mistake. PlayStation’s Canadian cancellation policy states that games and add-ons started downloading or streaming are not eligible for a refund unless they are faulty. The UK policy sets out the same core rule.
That means two conditions must normally be met for a standard refund:

- Downloading or streaming of the game or add-on has not started.
Both conditions matter. Being inside the 14-day window is not enough once the download or stream has begun.

How PlayStation decides whether the purchase is refundable
PlayStation’s checklist treats full games, downloadable content (DLC), and season passes as games/DLC for this purpose. The practical outcome depends on four questions: what type of content you bought, whether delivery started, when you bought it, and whether the content is faulty.

The table describes the standard rule, not a guarantee of the result in every country. PlayStation says local law may provide additional rights, so the country attached to your PlayStation account matters.
What counts as “downloaded” or “streamed”?
Starting a download is the critical change
Under the standard policy, eligibility turns on whether downloading has started, not on how much of the file has transferred. A download that is only partly complete is still a started download. Pausing, canceling, or deleting the game afterward does not restore the ordinary no-download condition.

The policy uses “downloading or streaming.” If you launched a cloud-streamed version or otherwise began streaming the content, treat the purchase as having entered the same restricted category even if no complete game file is stored on the console.

Automatic downloads and preloading
If your PS5 began an automatic download or preload, that is still a download having started. Check the transaction before initiating any installation when you are unsure about a purchase. The safest time to request a standard cancellation is before selecting download, streaming, or an automatic installation that starts delivery.
What if you downloaded the wrong game?
A mistaken purchase is ordinarily a change-of-mind request, not a fault. If the PS5 has already started downloading or streaming the title, the standard policy generally excludes it, even when you selected the wrong edition, bought the wrong game, or changed your mind immediately afterward.
If delivery has not started and the purchase is less than 14 days old, use the Order details process before downloading anything. If delivery has started, you can still contact PlayStation Support, but describe the facts accurately: the title, purchase date, whether download or streaming began, and what resolution you are seeking. Support may be limited by the policy and your account region; do not assume an exception will be granted.

What if the downloaded PS5 game is broken?
Faulty content is the principal policy exception for a game that has already been downloaded or streamed. “Faulty” means the product does not function as it should or does not match the service you purchased; it is different from simply disliking the game or discovering that it is not your preferred genre.

Examples of information to prepare
- The game or add-on name and edition.
- Your purchase date and transaction details.
- The PSN account country or region.
- A clear description of the defect, including what you expected and what happens instead.
- Relevant error messages, crash behavior, missing content, or repeatable steps that show the problem.
- Basic troubleshooting you already attempted, such as restarting the console or checking for an update, if Support asks for it.
Do not describe a preference or accidental purchase as a technical fault. A precise, honest description gives Support the information needed to assess whether the content is defective and which remedy is available under the applicable policy or law.
Possible remedies
The policy preserves a possible refund route for faulty downloaded content, but it does not promise that every fault produces a refund. Depending on the circumstances and your country, Support may assess the defect and determine an appropriate remedy. The exact result can therefore differ between account regions.
How to request a PlayStation Store cancellation
Use the transaction record rather than starting with the game tile on your PS5 home screen. PlayStation’s support instructions identify Order details as the starting point.

- Select the transaction for the game, DLC, or season pass.
- Look for Cancel Purchase. PlayStation shows this option when the transaction is presented as eligible.
- Select Cancel Purchase and follow the on-screen instructions.
- For a downloaded game that is faulty, use PlayStation Support or the PlayStation online assistant instead of presenting the request as an ordinary change of mind. Include the defect and the transaction information.
If “Cancel Purchase” is not displayed, that generally means the automated route does not consider the transaction eligible. It can reflect a started download or stream, the age of the purchase, the content type, or your account region. It is not proof that you have no legal rights, particularly where local law provides additional consumer protection; it means you should use the Support route to explain the circumstances.

What to do when the automated refund route fails
Check the transaction before contacting Support
Confirm that you are viewing the correct PSN account and the correct transaction. Families sometimes buy content on a different adult account, and a console can contain multiple users. Have the order details available so Support can locate the purchase without guessing.
Use Support or the online assistant
PlayStation directs customers who have problems with the automated process to PlayStation Support or its online assistant. State the relevant facts in one message: purchase date, title, download or streaming status, country, and whether the content is faulty. If the game is defective, explain the symptoms and when they occur.
Keep the case focused
Do not repeatedly submit different explanations for the same transaction. A consistent account helps Support distinguish an ordinary cancellation request from a faulty-content claim. Keep any case number, chat transcript, or email confirmation until the issue is resolved.

PlayStation’s refund FAQ says you may receive a refund in 10 days. This is a processing estimate, not a promise that every bank or payment provider will display the money on the same day. The refund is sent to the payment method used for the purchase where possible.

There are exceptions. Purchases made with wallet-fund vouchers may be handled differently because the original payment method may not be able to receive the money. Check the refund instructions for your account country and monitor the original payment method or wallet balance as applicable.
If the stated period has passed, check your bank or payment provider first, then contact PlayStation Support with the transaction details and any refund confirmation. Avoid opening a payment dispute with your bank as a first step while a PlayStation case is active; explain the situation to PlayStation so the account and transaction can be reviewed through the normal process.
Why your country and account region matter
The published policies used for this guidance include PlayStation Store cancellation pages for Canada and the UK, with the same central rule about started downloads and streams. The UK policy also expressly notes that customers may have additional rights under applicable local law. Ireland and other markets can have their own wording, procedures, and consumer-law protections.

Before relying on a deadline or remedy, open the PlayStation support page for the account’s country and read its current cancellation terms.
Local law can matter most when the content is faulty, misleading, or otherwise fails to meet statutory standards. The standard 14-day rule is not a complete statement of every legal right, and Support may need to assess the facts under the law that applies to your account.
Common mistakes that reduce your options
- Downloading before checking: Starting a download can remove the ordinary cancellation eligibility, even when the purchase is only minutes old.
- Assuming 14 days means unconditional returns: The deadline and the no-download/no-stream condition work together.
- Deleting the game and trying again: Removing installed files does not change the fact that delivery started.
- Calling a preference a defect: A faulty-content request should identify a genuine functional or conformity problem.
- Using the wrong account: The transaction belongs to the PSN account that made the purchase.
- Ignoring region-specific terms: Procedures and statutory rights can vary by account country.
- Expecting an instant bank credit: PlayStation says refunds may take 10 days, and wallet-funded purchases can follow a different path.
A practical decision checklist
Work through these questions in order:
- Has downloading or streaming started? If no, do not start it while you decide. If yes, continue to the fault and local-law questions.
- Was the purchase made within the last 14 days? If no, the ordinary cancellation path is normally closed, although a faulty-content or legal claim may still be relevant.
- Is this an ordinary change of mind or a genuine fault? A wrong game or unwanted purchase is ordinarily a change of mind; crashes, missing purchased content, or other failures may support a faulty-content request.
- What country is on the PSN account? Read that market’s current terms and use its Support channel.
- Which route is available? Use Order details and “Cancel Purchase” for an eligible transaction; use PlayStation Support or the online assistant when the automated option is absent or the downloaded content is faulty.
- How was it paid for? Expect the refund to return to the original payment method where possible, with special handling possible for wallet vouchers.
Bottom line for a downloaded PS5 game
A downloaded or streamed PlayStation Store game is usually not refundable simply because you are still within 14 days. The standard rule requires both a timely request and no started download or stream. If the content is faulty, contact PlayStation Support with a clear defect description and your transaction details; that is the main policy exception. Start eligible requests in Order details with “Cancel Purchase,” use the Support or online-assistant route when that option is unavailable, and allow up to 10 days for a refund to process. Always check the terms for your PSN account country because local law can provide additional rights.
