Usually, no automatic refund is due just because a game’s online servers close. PlayStation’s terms warn that online-mode products may stop working when PSN features or publisher servers are withdrawn and say they will not be refunded. The normal digital-store cancellation rule is separate: a game or add-on is generally refundable within 14 days only if downloading or streaming has not started, unless the product is faulty. Your country’s consumer law may provide additional rights, so the purchase jurisdiction and the amount of offline functionality that remains are important.
What PlayStation’s published rules say
Two different rules control most requests, and confusing them leads to unrealistic expectations. The first is the ordinary cancellation policy for digital purchases. The second addresses the lifespan of online services.
The standard digital-game window is 14 days
PlayStation’s cancellation policy says a game or game add-on can be cancelled within 14 days of purchase, provided downloading or streaming has not started. Once downloading or streaming has begun, the policy says the item is not eligible for a refund unless it is faulty. The 14-day period runs from the purchase date, not from the day a publisher later announces a server closure.

The terms specifically address server shutdowns
PlayStation’s terms state that a publisher may permanently shut down an online server. They warn that “Products for use in online modes may not be useable after PSN features are withdrawn or servers are shutdown and will not be refunded.” This language is a contractual disclaimer, not a promise that every title will lose all functionality. It explains why a server closure by itself does not trigger an automatic Store credit or repayment under the platform’s standard terms.
Online access is not promised forever
The March 2026 terms say, “Online services are not provided for ever.” They also say third-party publishers are asked to provide advance notice of a shutdown. Notice gives players time to use remaining services, but it does not convert a discontinued online feature into a refundable purchase under the standard policy.
Local statutory rights remain relevant
The cancellation policy says additional rights may exist under applicable local law, and PlayStation’s server notices say statutory rights are not affected. Those rights differ by country and can depend on the product, the seller, the date of purchase, the promised features and whether the digital content still conforms to the contract. No universal answer can be given without knowing where the purchase was made and which law applies.

Before asking for money back, identify exactly what is ending. A notice may cover matchmaking, leaderboards, user-generated content, live events, cloud features or every network function. The campaign, local multiplayer, training modes or other offline content may continue to work.

Examples from official shutdown notices
An official notice for inFAMOUS explains that online user-generated-content features will end while the main campaign remains playable. A notice for Destruction AllStars says some single-player Arcade Mode challenges remain available after server support ends. In cases like these, the product has lost a substantial feature but has not become entirely unusable. That distinction can affect both a support review and any legal assessment of conformity or value.
Conversely, a title designed almost entirely around an online service may lose its principal purpose when authentication, matchmaking or progression servers disappear. The practical impact is therefore title-specific; the existence of a shutdown announcement is not enough to measure the loss.

Gather the facts in the same order a support agent or consumer authority will need them.

How to ask PlayStation Support for a case review
- Read the shutdown announcement. Save the official notice and note the announced date, time zone and list of affected services. Do not assume that every online feature disappears on the same day.
- Describe your actual loss. State whether matchmaking, user-generated content, cloud saves, progression, events or another function is unavailable. Explain which offline modes remain, if any.
- Check the purchase record. Locate the transaction ID, purchase date, account, edition, add-ons and platform. If the purchase is within 14 days and has not been downloaded or streamed, say so clearly.
- Document a defect separately. If the game fails to launch, corrupts saves or cannot deliver a promised feature for reasons beyond the announced shutdown, provide reproducible steps and error codes. The policy treats a faulty product differently from a service that has simply reached its announced end.
- Request a specific remedy. Ask for a refund or another remedy and explain why the shutdown materially affects what you bought. Include the country of purchase and identify any local statutory right you believe applies.
- Keep the case record. Save the case number, dates, replies and attachments. If the decision is negative, a complete chronology is useful for a retailer, publisher or consumer-protection authority.
What evidence makes a request clearer
- The original Store receipt or transaction history.
- The server-closure announcement, including the list of modes and the effective date.
- Screenshots or video showing unavailable functions and the exact error message.
- A concise list of features that still operate offline.
- Proof of the account region and purchase country when those differ.
- Earlier product descriptions or promises that specifically described the online feature, if you still have them.
- Details of any attempted troubleshooting and the support response.
Send facts rather than a general statement that the game is “dead.” A precise description helps support distinguish a title that remains substantially playable from one whose advertised purpose has disappeared.

Why a server closure and a faulty product are treated differently
A fault is a failure to provide the product as supplied: for example, a game that will not launch despite supported hardware or a promised component that is broken. A server retirement is normally a stated change to an online service’s availability. PlayStation’s cancellation policy expressly preserves the possibility of a refund for a faulty downloaded or streamed product, while the terms warn that online-mode products may not remain usable after servers close.
Do not label every shutdown a “fault” without evidence. Instead, identify whether the game is operating as the publisher announced, whether a paid feature was removed earlier than promised, and whether the remaining product meets the description that applied when you bought it. Those details may matter under local law even when the platform’s standard policy does not provide an automatic refund.
Which company should handle the request?
The seller is important. A digital purchase made directly through the PlayStation Store is normally presented to PlayStation Support under the Store cancellation policy. A physical copy bought from a shop is a transaction with that retailer, whose return and consumer-law obligations may differ. A download code sold by another merchant may require contacting that merchant for a monetary remedy, while the publisher remains the source of shutdown information.
PlayStation Plus access, promotional entitlements and bundled add-ons can also have separate transaction records. List each item rather than assuming that a subscription, base game and add-on share one refund decision. Support can then identify which purchase is being reviewed.

If support refuses the request
A denial under the standard policy is not a determination of every legal right in your country. Ask for the policy reason in writing and confirm whether the decision addressed the shutdown’s effect on the product, the purchase date, download status and any defect you reported.
If you still believe the product failed to meet a statutory digital-content guarantee, contact the consumer-protection authority or a qualified adviser in the jurisdiction where the purchase was made. Provide your evidence and the support correspondence. Eligibility cannot be determined universally because legal standards, deadlines and available remedies differ by country.
Questions players often have
Can I get a refund simply because Sony closed the servers?
Not automatically under the published PlayStation terms. The terms specifically warn that online-mode products may not be usable after a shutdown and will not be refunded. You can still request an individual review and rely on any stronger right provided by local law.
Does the 14-day rule restart when the shutdown is announced?
No. The policy describes 14 days from the purchase date. A later announcement does not restart that period.

What if I never used the online mode?
Non-use by itself does not create a new cancellation period. The relevant facts remain the purchase date, whether downloading or streaming began, whether the product is faulty and what local law provides.
What if only multiplayer is gone but the campaign still works?
Explain the exact split. Official notices show that some games retain their main campaign or single-player challenges after online features end. The amount of usable offline content can affect the practical and legal assessment, but it does not guarantee a refund.
Can I demand a refund for every add-on tied to the closed service?
List each add-on and the function it provided. A separately purchased online-only item may have a different factual impact from a cosmetic or offline item, yet the standard Store rule and the server-shutdown terms still apply unless local law says otherwise.

Is a chargeback guaranteed if support says no?
