Can you fix bent chargers? A gently curved cable that has no visible damage may still be usable, but a kinked, frayed, split, or deformed cable should not be straightened or repaired at home. Unplug and replace it. A bent or broken AC plug prong is also not a DIY repair; if a broken prong is stuck in an outlet, treat it as an electrical hazard.
Is a bent charging cable safe to use?
It depends on whether the cable is simply curved or actually damaged. A smooth curve, with intact insulation and connectors, is not by itself proof that a cable has failed. Apple advises gentle curves rather than sharp angles for its listed Mac cables and warns that bending repeatedly at the same spot can weaken the cable or make it brittle. That handling advice is manufacturer guidance for those cables, not a universal test for every cable design. Apple’s cable-handling guidance explains the distinction.
Stop using a cable if it is kinked, frayed, split, cut, deformed, discolored, has exposed wire, or has a loose connector. Also stop if charging cuts in and out when the cable is moved, or if the cable or charger becomes unusually hot, smells unusual, sparks, or smokes. Apple warns that damaged cables or chargers can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or property damage; its iPhone safety information advises against using damaged charging equipment.

How to inspect a cable safely
- Disconnect it first. Unplug the cable from the device and power source before examining it.
- Check its full length. Look for cuts, exposed conductors, split insulation, severe kinks, flattening, discoloration, or other deformation.
- Inspect both ends. Check for a bent or damaged connector, cracks, or a loose connection where the cable meets the plug.
- Decide based on condition. If you find damage or any warning sign, stop using the cable and replace it. Do not test it again to see whether it still works.
Can you straighten or repair a damaged cable?
Do not try to force a kink straight, wrap damaged insulation with tape, use glue or heat-shrink tubing, or splice the cable. Those steps do not establish that the conductors and insulation are safe. The cited manufacturer safety guidance calls for discontinuing use of damaged cables, not attempting a household repair. Replace a visibly damaged cable rather than relying on a patch.

What if the plug or adapter is bent?
A damaged AC adapter, mains power cord, or plug prong should be taken out of use. Do not bend a prong back or attempt to repair the adapter. Apple’s guidance for power adaptors and cables says to stop using a damaged AC adapter or AC power cable.
If a broken prong is lodged in an outlet, do not touch it or use that outlet. Turn off the relevant circuit breaker only if you can verify that the circuit is de-energized; otherwise contact a qualified electrician. Do not try to pull the prong out yourself.

If the cable looks intact but the device will not charge
Do not assume a smooth curve is the cause. If the cable passes inspection, check that it is firmly connected at both ends, inspect the adapter, and try another power source. Apple includes these basic checks in its charging troubleshooting guidance. Do not continue troubleshooting with a cable that has visible damage or warning signs.

- Connector type: It must fit the device and the charger or power source.
- Charging capability: Confirm the cable supports the device’s charging requirements.
- Length: Choose a practical length that will not require tight bends or strain at the connectors.
- Data transfer: If you use the cable to sync or transfer files, confirm it supports that function as well as charging.
