Sometimes, but 12GB is below the cited Windows and Linux requirements for DaVinci Resolve 19, and it is not enough to meet that release’s Fusion memory figure on Windows or Mac. On Mac, 12GB is above Resolve 19’s general 8GB figure. These are Resolve 19 requirements, not verified requirements for the newer Resolve 21.1 update listed by Blackmagic Design.
What 12GB means for each operating system
Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve 19 release announcement gives different system-memory figures by operating system and Fusion use:
| Operating system | Resolve 19 general figure | Resolve 19 with Fusion | How 12GB compares |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | 16GB of system memory | 32GB of system memory | 4GB below the general figure and 20GB below the Fusion figure |
| Mac OS | 8GB of system memory | 16GB of system memory | 4GB above the general figure and 4GB below the Fusion figure |
| Linux | 32GB of system memory | Not stated separately in the announcement | 20GB below the stated figure |
The comparisons are arithmetic using Blackmagic’s published Resolve 19 figures, not predictions of speed or evidence that a specific computer will launch the software. The announcement does not provide a separate Linux Fusion figure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes that mean Resolve will not run with 12GB?
No categorical conclusion follows from these figures. Being below a published requirement means the configuration does not meet that stated baseline; it does not prove the program cannot start. No controlled test of a defined 12GB computer and current Resolve version is established here, so there is no dependable promise that editing will be smooth—or even work reliably—for your particular setup.

- A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
Actual behavior can depend on how much memory is free after the operating system and background apps, as well as the footage resolution and codec, timeline, effects, GPU, and Resolve version. A light project and a demanding effects-heavy workflow should not be treated as equivalent.
Resolve 21.1 requirements are not established by the cited listing
Blackmagic Design’s support center lists DaVinci Resolve 21.1 as an update dated September 8, 2026. That listing identifies the update and date, but does not establish its detailed RAM requirements. Do not assume the Resolve 19 figures above are confirmed requirements for Resolve 21.1; check the system requirements for the exact release you plan to install.

System RAM and GPU memory are different
The RAM figures above refer to system memory, not the memory built into or dedicated to a graphics card. Resolve also relies on the GPU for image processing. Blackmagic’s Resolve 12 configuration guide describes GPU memory as important for some operations, but it is historical context rather than a current GPU requirement. Meeting a system-RAM figure does not establish that the GPU, its memory, operating system, or drivers are suitable.
Should you upgrade?
If you use Windows
On the Resolve 19 figures, 16GB reaches the general system-memory figure and 32GB reaches the listed Fusion figure. These are reference points from that release, not verified Resolve 21.1 requirements or a guarantee of performance.

If you use Mac
Resolve 19 lists 8GB generally and 16GB with Fusion. A 12GB Mac is above the former and below the latter, but the figures alone cannot determine how a specific Apple computer will handle your projects.
If you use Linux
Resolve 19 lists 32GB of system memory, so 12GB is below that published figure.

Check compatibility before buying memory
Before purchasing RAM, look up the exact computer model in its service manual or manufacturer specifications. Confirm the supported memory type and maximum capacity, available slots, and whether memory is soldered. A kit’s stated capacity alone does not establish compatibility, and more system RAM will not fix an unsupported GPU, operating system, codec, or driver.
