Yes. Some U.S.-listed Ethereum ETFs stake ether held by their trusts and pass the resulting economics through the fund. The return is variable rather than a fixed coupon: network rewards change, and sponsor, staking-provider, custody and other trust expenses reduce what shareholders receive. Staking can also be paused for liquidity, regulatory, security or protocol reasons.

An ETF gives you brokerage-account exposure without running a validator or controlling staking keys. To judge whether a particular fund is suitable, read its latest prospectus and compare its staking policy, percentage of ether actually staked, total fees, liquidity arrangements, custody providers and tax documents.

How staking inside an Ethereum ETF works

Ethereum’s proof-of-stake process

Ethereum uses proof of stake. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s 2025 notice concerning a VanEck product explains that validators staking a minimum of 32 ether are randomly selected by an Ethereum Network algorithm to process transactions. A validator that acts maliciously or violates protocol rules can be penalized through slashing, which forfeits part of the staked ether.

An ETF trust normally does not put every coin into one self-operated validator. Its sponsor can use one or more specialized staking providers, which run validator infrastructure or delegate activity. The provider and custodian handle keys and operations under contracts with the trust. Shareholders own ETF shares, not validator accounts, and cannot choose when to stake, unstake or vote with the keys.

How rewards reach shareholders

The trust receives all or a defined portion of the staking rewards generated by its ether, then accounts for those rewards under the fund documents. Depending on the product, the economic effect can appear through the fund’s net asset value (NAV), share price tracking or distributions. A rising NAV does not mean the fund pays a regular cash coupon; the prospectus controls the actual treatment.

Staking also creates an illiquidity trade-off. Ether may have an unbonding or withdrawal period, while the ETF must keep enough immediately available assets to meet creations, redemptions, expenses and market-making needs. A fund can therefore maintain a liquid sleeve and stake only part of its holdings, even when marketing emphasizes staking.

Which Ethereum ETFs currently include staking?

The following examples are documented as staking-enabled or staking-intended products for U.S. investors as of October 2026. Terms can change, so use the current prospectus and statutory filings before trading.

ETF What its documents say about staking Fee information Important timing or scope
iShares Staked Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHB) Seeks to reflect ether-price performance plus rewards from staking a position of the trust’s ether. 0.25% annualized sponsor fee. A first-year waiver reduces the fee to 0.12% for the first $2.5 billion of assets during the stated waiver period. The iShares prospectus records 51,455.15168979 ether purchased for seed capital on February 18, 2026. The amount actually staked can vary with operations and liquidity.
Grayscale Ethereum Staking ETF (ETHE) The 2025 Form 10-K says the sponsor currently engages in, and anticipates continuing, staking with respect to all of the trust’s ether at all times. Use the latest prospectus for the current sponsor fee and the share of rewards retained or paid as expenses. The staking commitment has exceptions for fees, redemptions, liquidity, regulatory or policy concerns, software or cryptography vulnerabilities, provider discontinuation and other trust-protection reasons.
21Shares Ethereum ETF (TETH) 21Shares announced on October 8, 2025 that the trust added staking and would reflect rewards from staking a portion of its ether. The filing states a 0.21% total expense ratio fully waived for 12 months beginning October 9, 2025. The announced waiver period was scheduled to run for 12 months; confirm the post-waiver expense ratio and current staking percentage in the latest filing.

These products are not interchangeable. “Staking-enabled” can mean an intention to stake, a discretionary authority, or staking only a portion of the portfolio. The decisive language is in each fund’s prospectus, not in the ticker symbol.

Is ETF staking yield guaranteed?

No. Ethereum rewards are protocol output, not a promised interest rate. The number of rewards changes with network participation, validator performance, transaction activity and protocol rules. Your net result is approximately:

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

net staking economics = rewards attributable to the trust − sponsor and provider fees − other trust expenses − losses from downtime, penalties or slashing.

That result is then combined with the market movement of ether and any tracking difference between the fund and spot ether. A positive staking result can be overwhelmed by a fall in ether’s market price, while a rising ether price can mask weak staking performance. No single annual percentage yield should be treated as guaranteed for any ETF.

How much do fees reduce the return?

Fees reduce the return continuously, even when the fund has not yet earned a reward. For ETHB, the published sponsor fee is 0.25% per year, with a temporary 0.12% rate for the first $2.5 billion of assets during the stated first-year waiver. The lower rate applies only under the waiver’s conditions and period; it is not a permanent fee.

TETH’s filing describes a 0.21% total expense ratio waived for 12 months from October 9, 2025. Because that period is limited, an investor in October 2026 must check whether the waiver ended, was extended or was replaced. ETHE’s current fee and reward-sharing terms should likewise be taken from its latest prospectus rather than an older filing.

Do not compare a fund’s gross network reward with another fund’s net result. Check whether the quoted expense ratio includes staking-provider charges, custody costs, administration and any other expenses, and determine whether the sponsor can retain a portion of rewards before they affect NAV.

A practical checklist for comparing staking ETFs

  1. Read the staking authority. Determine whether staking is mandatory, discretionary or limited to a stated portion of ether. Look for language allowing the sponsor to stop staking.
  2. Find the expected staked percentage. A fund may advertise staking while keeping assets liquid for creations, redemptions and expenses. Identify whether the percentage is a target, a ceiling or merely an intention.
  3. Calculate all recurring costs. Record the sponsor fee, total expense ratio, provider charges and any reward-sharing arrangement. Apply temporary waivers only for their documented dates and asset limits.
  4. Examine liquidity and withdrawals. Check how the trust handles unstaking, protocol withdrawal queues, redemptions and the liquid sleeve. Delays can affect the fund’s ability to meet cash requests or rebalance.
  5. Review custody and slashing protections. Identify the custodian and staking providers, insurance or indemnity language, allocation of penalties and procedures for provider failure. Protection is contractual and may not cover every loss.
  6. See how rewards affect NAV or distributions. The documents should explain when rewards are recognized, whether they compound in the trust and whether shareholders receive cash distributions or only price appreciation.
  7. Check tax reporting. Find the fund’s current shareholder tax documents and distribution policy. Staking-related reporting can differ from direct ownership, and tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances; obtain professional advice for a filing decision.
  8. Compare trading conditions. Review bid-ask spreads, average volume, creation and redemption arrangements and the possibility of premiums or discounts to NAV. Staking rewards do not remove ordinary ETF market-structure risks.

Risks that remain after buying a staking ETF

Ether-price volatility

An ETF share represents exposure to ether’s market price. Prices can move sharply in either direction, and the TETH filing warns that investors could suffer a complete loss. Staking rewards cannot provide a floor under the share price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slashing and operational failure

Validator software, signing systems, internet connectivity and key-management procedures can fail. A provider’s mistake or malicious activity can trigger slashing. Contracts may allocate some losses to a provider, but that does not guarantee full reimbursement or immediate recovery.

Liquidity and unstaking delays

The trust may need to keep ether unstaked to satisfy redemptions and expenses. Conversely, staked ether may be unavailable during a protocol withdrawal queue. Those conditions can create tracking differences or limit how quickly the fund changes its staking level.

Custody, software and smart-contract vulnerabilities

Custodians and providers face theft, insolvency, cyberattack and operational outages. Bugs in Ethereum software or related systems can disrupt rewards or access to assets. The fund’s disclosure describes the specific responsibility and limitation of each service provider; do not assume ordinary brokerage protection covers protocol losses.

Regulatory and policy changes

A sponsor can pause staking when legal requirements, internal policy or regulator guidance changes. ETHE’s filing expressly lists regulatory and policy concerns, provider discontinuation and code or cryptography vulnerabilities among reasons staking may not continue.

No government guarantee

ETF shares are securities, not bank deposits. The ETHB prospectus states that its shares are not FDIC-insured and are not guaranteed by a government agency. Brokerage protection, if any, addresses a broker’s failure under its own rules; it does not guarantee ether’s price or staking rewards.

What an investor actually does

  1. Open or use a brokerage account that lists the ETF and review its trading, custody and tax-document policies.
  2. Download the fund’s current prospectus, statement of additional information and most recent shareholder report.
  3. Confirm the staking scope, fee waiver dates, provider and custody arrangements, reward accounting and pause rights.
  4. Buy shares during market hours, remembering that the execution price can differ from the fund’s latest NAV because ETFs trade on an exchange.
  5. Monitor filings and reports for changes to fees, staked assets, providers, distributions and tax forms. A ticker can remain unchanged while its staking terms change.

You do not need 32 ether, validator hardware or a wallet key to buy an ETF. The trade-off is that you surrender direct control and accept the fund’s expenses, operating decisions and market-structure differences.

Common questions

Do Ethereum ETFs pay staking rewards directly?

Some funds reflect staking rewards in NAV or distributions, but they do not function like a savings account with a fixed payment schedule. Read the product’s reward-accounting section to see whether any cash distribution is expected.

Can I stake the ETF shares myself?

No. The trust’s sponsor and its staking providers control validator operations and keys. You can sell the shares, but you cannot direct the trust’s validators or withdraw its ether personally.

Does every ether held by a staking ETF earn rewards?

No. Liquidity needs, withdrawal queues, fees, redemptions, provider capacity and risk controls can leave some ether unstaked. Even ETHE’s stated intention to stake all trust ether includes explicit exceptions.

What should I verify before relying on a fee waiver?

Check the waiver’s start and end dates, asset cap, eligibility conditions and post-waiver fee in the latest filing. ETHB’s reduced rate is limited to the first $2.5 billion during its stated waiver period, while TETH’s announced full waiver covered 12 months from October 9, 2025.
