No. Google does not support dual-booting ChromeOS Flex with macOS. A normal installation replaces the Mac’s current system drive and erases its files, applications and settings; Google says data erased during installation cannot be recovered. The supported way to try Flex while keeping macOS is to start Flex from its USB installer without installing it.

This distinction matters because unofficial partitioning or bootloader experiments may appear to work on a particular Mac, but they are not a supported ChromeOS Flex configuration. Compatibility is also model-specific, so an “Intel Mac” label alone is not enough to establish that Flex will function properly.

What Google officially supports

Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ states that “Dual booting is not supported on ChromeOS Flex devices.” That rules out treating Flex like a second operating system installed beside macOS on separate partitions. Google’s documented alternatives are deliberately narrower:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • USB live boot: run Flex from the installer drive to explore it temporarily while the Mac’s existing operating system and data remain on the internal drive.
  • Full installation: install Flex to the computer, which completely erases the existing system drive.

There is no third, Google-supported option that preserves macOS and installs Flex internally as a selectable second system. Forum instructions involving custom partitioning, modified bootloaders or manually maintained startup entries should therefore be treated as unsupported experiments, not as a reliable dual-boot procedure.

That support boundary also applies if an unofficial method happens to boot successfully. A one-time boot does not mean Google will guarantee updates, hardware behavior, recovery or future startup reliability. If retaining macOS is important, stay with the USB trial and do not alter the internal disk.

USB live boot versus installation

Choice Where Flex runs Does macOS remain on the Mac? Data-loss risk Best use
Live boot From the USB installer Yes, provided you do not start an installation The USB drive is erased when the installer is created; the internal Mac drive is not changed by simply trying Flex Short-term evaluation, hardware checks and temporary use
Installation From the Mac’s internal storage No; the existing installation is replaced All existing data, programs and settings on the target drive are erased. Google says erased files are not recoverable. Replacing macOS on a compatible Mac after a verified backup and compatibility check

Live boot is the only documented path that lets you test Flex without removing macOS. It has limited storage and is intended for temporary exploration rather than a permanent workstation. If you need both operating systems available regularly, keep macOS and use a separate supported environment for Flex testing, or use another computer; do not assume an internal dual-boot arrangement is supported.

The USB trial is also the lower-risk comparison. It costs only the USB media you use, requires no paid software or subscription, and lets you stop by shutting down and removing the drive. Installation may be appropriate only when you have deliberately decided to replace macOS, not when you merely want to measure performance or check whether a peripheral works.

Check the exact Intel Mac model first

ChromeOS Flex compatibility is evaluated by model, not simply by processor family. Google guarantees Flex functionality only on models in its certified-model list. Non-certified computers may boot and operate, but performance, individual hardware features and stability are not guaranteed.

Google’s baseline requirements

  • An Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM.
  • At least 16 GB of internal storage.
  • Firmware and hardware that can boot from USB.

These are minimum technical requirements, not a promise that every Intel Mac meeting them will work well. Before using the installer, identify the Mac’s exact model and year and compare it with Google’s current certified-model list. A Mac variant that looks nearly identical to a certified model can still have different graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, camera or input hardware.

Check the list again if you are comparing two Macs from the same product family. Certification is tied to particular models and can include notes about known limitations. Do not infer support from another owner’s report, from the fact that the Mac has an Intel processor, or from the fact that it meets the RAM and storage minimums.

Hardware functions may be incomplete

On third-party hardware, including Macs, some device functions are not supported or guaranteed. A successful boot does not prove that every component works. Check essentials such as display output, keyboard and trackpad input, wireless networking, audio, webcam, sleep and wake, and external ports during the live session before considering any permanent change.

Test the functions you actually depend on, not only whether the desktop appears. For example, a Mac that reaches the Flex desktop but lacks reliable Wi-Fi, audio or sleep behavior may be unsuitable as a daily machine. If an essential component fails on a non-certified model, the practical answer is usually to keep macOS and use Flex only for limited experimentation.

Important differences between ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS

ChromeOS Flex is not identical to the operating system installed on a Chromebook. Google says Flex devices do not include the Google security chip or ChromeOS verified boot. Those capabilities are part of the Chromebook hardware-and-software security model and are not supplied by installing Flex on a Mac.

That difference affects security assurances and hardware integration. A Mac running Flex should not be described as having every Chromebook capability, even when the desktop experience looks similar. Treat the certified-model information and the features that actually work on your model as the authority.

This is another reason not to use an unofficial dual-boot guide to promise a Chromebook-equivalent result. Even if a bootloader can start Flex from an internal partition, it cannot add the missing Google security chip or verified-boot hardware to the Mac.

What you need for a safe USB trial

  • An Intel Mac that can select a USB startup device.
  • A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
  • Access to a computer and Google’s current ChromeOS Flex installer instructions.
  • A backup of any files you cannot afford to lose, kept separately from the Mac and USB drive.

Creating the installer erases the USB drive’s contents. Copy anything on that drive elsewhere first. Google also notes that some USB drives may not work correctly as installers; its current known-issues guidance should take precedence over assumptions based on a particular brand or model. SanDisk drives, for example, have sometimes appeared among drives with problems, but that is not a guarantee that every drive of that brand will fail or that another brand will always work.

The computer used to create the installer does not have to be the Mac on which you will test Flex. What matters is that the resulting USB is created with Google’s current method and that the target Mac can boot from USB. The 8 GB figure is a capacity minimum for creating the installer, not a promise of useful long-term storage in the live environment.

How to try ChromeOS Flex without erasing macOS

The exact installer screens can change, so use Google’s current ChromeOS Flex preparation and installation instructions for the download and USB-writing steps. The safe workflow is:

  1. Back up the Mac. Make a current backup of documents, photos, credentials and any other data stored on the internal drive. A live boot should not alter that drive, but a mistaken choice of installation can erase it.
  2. Prepare an empty USB drive. Use one with at least 8 GB of capacity. Move its existing files elsewhere because the installer-creation process will erase the drive.
  3. Create the official ChromeOS Flex installer. Follow Google’s current installer procedure rather than downloading an unofficial image or using a modified bootloader. Wait for the writing and verification process to finish.
  4. Shut down the Intel Mac completely. Insert the installer USB before starting it again. Disconnect unnecessary external storage so that the startup choices are easier to identify.
  5. Open Apple’s startup picker. Turn on or restart the Mac and hold the Option key (the key next to Command) while it starts. Google identifies Option as the Apple boot key for this process.
  6. Select the USB entry. The installer may appear as EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex. Choose the entry that corresponds to the USB drive, not the Mac’s internal disk.
  7. Choose the try-without-installing path. When Flex starts, remain in the live environment. Do not choose an option that installs Flex to the internal drive unless you have intentionally decided to replace macOS and have completed a separate backup and compatibility review.
  8. Test the hardware and workflow you care about. Check wireless networking, sound, graphics, keyboard, trackpad, camera, sleep and external devices. Live boot uses limited storage, so it is suitable for evaluation rather than a full long-term data setup.
  9. Shut down and remove the USB drive. After testing, power off the Mac, remove the installer and start it normally. macOS should remain on the internal drive because you did not run the installation.

Do not use the live session as evidence that an internal dual boot will be supported. Live boot and installed boot can exercise different firmware paths and storage behavior, and Google’s support position remains unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair test, repeat the tasks you expect to perform: connect to your normal Wi-Fi, play audio, attach the displays or USB devices you use, close and reopen the lid if applicable, and perform a full shutdown and restart. A brief successful desktop launch is only a boot test; it is not a compatibility certification.

What happens if you install Flex

Installation is a replacement operation, not a macOS-preserving setup. Google says it completely erases all existing data, including programs, settings and files, and that files erased during installation are not recoverable. The warning applies to the target system drive, so a backup must be made before starting and verified independently.

Before choosing installation

  • Confirm the exact Mac model against Google’s certified-model list.
  • Decide that macOS is no longer needed on that internal drive, or have a separate, tested way to restore it.
  • Make and verify a complete backup of personal files and any macOS recovery or reinstall media you may need.
  • Disconnect other disks to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong target.
  • Understand that Flex will not add Chromebook-only security hardware or guaranteed support for every Mac component.

If retaining macOS is a requirement, stop at the live-boot stage. There is no supported installation switch that converts the process into a dual-boot setup.

Because installation is destructive, do not treat it as a reversible trial. Copying files to another location is not enough unless you can actually access that backup and restore macOS. Verify that important files open from the backup and keep recovery media separate from the Mac being changed.

Mac startup labels and troubleshooting

The USB does not appear

Restart and hold Option at the correct time, then wait for the startup picker to populate. Confirm that the USB was created with Google’s current method and that it is connected directly rather than through a problematic hub. Try another USB port or drive if the installer was not written successfully. Google warns that some drives may not work as installers, so replace a suspect drive instead of modifying the Mac’s partitions.

Also remove unrelated external disks while troubleshooting. Multiple bootable devices can make the picker harder to interpret, and selecting the internal disk is not the same as selecting the Flex installer.

The entry is called EFI Boot

That label can be the USB Flex startup entry on a Mac. Select it only when the corresponding installer drive is connected. The label does not indicate that macOS and Flex have been installed together, nor does it change Google’s unsupported status for dual boot.

The screen stays black or startup takes a long time

Google documents cases in which a Mac shows a black screen or takes an extended time to start after Flex installation. One possible cause is that the logic board is still seeking the former OS X or macOS installation. Follow the current Google troubleshooting instructions for the exact Mac model rather than repeatedly interrupting startup or making unverified firmware changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older Macs can have model-specific cautions involving NVRAM resets. Do not apply a reset procedure from a different model or assume that clearing NVRAM will restore macOS after an erased installation. Identify the model first and use the instructions applicable to it.

Flex starts but a component does not work

Record the exact model, Flex version and affected hardware, then compare the model with Google’s certified information and known issues. A non-working camera, wireless adapter, audio device or sleep function can reflect unsupported hardware rather than an installation mistake. If the function is essential, keep the Mac on macOS and use the USB trial only for experimentation.

Why Boot Camp is not a ChromeOS Flex solution

Apple’s Boot Camp documentation describes installing Windows 10 and switching between Windows and macOS on supported Intel Macs. That is Apple’s documented dual-boot route for Windows; it does not document ChromeOS Flex support. Boot Camp therefore cannot be used as evidence that Flex can be installed beside macOS, and Boot Camp partitioning or startup tools should not be repurposed as a Flex procedure.

The comparison is useful only to clarify scope: Apple documents a Windows workflow, while Google explicitly says Flex dual boot is unsupported. The existence of one supported dual-boot product on Intel Macs does not transfer that support to another operating system.

Choosing the right path

Your goal Appropriate action What to avoid
See whether Flex boots and whether Mac hardware works Create the official USB and use live boot Installing to the internal drive “just to test”
Keep all macOS files and applications Use the USB-only trial and leave the internal drive untouched Partitioning or replacing the drive without a verified recovery plan
Replace macOS permanently Check the certified model list, back up everything and perform the documented installation Expecting to restore erased files or retain a hidden macOS partition
Use both operating systems as supported daily environments Keep macOS on the Mac and evaluate Flex on separate compatible hardware or through its temporary USB mode Relying on unofficial dual-boot guides

In practical terms, there are two supported choices, not three: a temporary USB session that preserves the Mac, or a destructive installation that replaces it. The USB route requires an 8 GB or larger drive and has limited storage; the installation route requires a compatible model, a verified backup and acceptance that the existing drive will be erased. No paid utility is needed for the documented USB evaluation path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Intel Mac work?

No. Google guarantees functionality only for certified models. Check the exact model and year; meeting the 4 GB RAM, 16 GB storage, x86-64 and USB-boot minimums does not guarantee that every hardware feature will work.

Why does the startup picker say EFI Boot?

On some Macs, the Flex USB appears under that name. Select it when it corresponds to the connected installer. The label is not proof of a supported internal dual-boot installation.

What size USB drive do I need?

Google requires an 8 GB or larger USB drive for installer creation. Its contents are erased during creation, and some drives may not work correctly, so copy off important files and consult Google’s current known-issues guidance.

Can I create the installer on a different computer?

Yes. The computer used to create the installer can differ from the Intel Mac you test. The target Mac still must meet the general requirements and boot from USB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ChromeOS Flex the same as ChromeOS on a Chromebook?

No. Google says Flex devices lack the Google security chip and ChromeOS verified boot, and some hardware functions on third-party computers are not supported or guaranteed.

The Bottom Line

ChromeOS Flex cannot be dual-booted with macOS as a Google-supported setup. Use an 8 GB or larger USB installer to test Flex without touching the internal drive, and check the exact Mac model against Google’s certified list. Installing Flex replaces macOS and permanently erases the target drive’s existing data.
